Debit card at Rental pickup

Was wondering what everyone experience is with using a debit card to pick up a rental car. They said they do a soft credit check (not sure what that is). Has anyone been denied from getting the car. Also what amount is put on hold. Thanks for any help.

I think it really depends on where you rent from.

We are renting from National (well, that's what I have reserved at this very moment). I called to ask about joining Emerald Club.

They told me in order to rent with a debit card (we have no credit cards) I have to show valid round trip airline tickets for the rental period. No problem there.

I asked about holds, they told me no hold would be put on my card until we returned with the car and the amount would be deducted.

I can't join the Emerald Club without a credit card tho no emerald isle for me!

Your rental car website will have an explanation of what is required to rent with a debit card.
