Debate: Clay or Fantasia, the true American Idol?

Wow, I guess I didn't see any of these as bashing... they were opinions. I happen to agree with some of them too. I have to admit I think a bit less of Fantasia because she didn't graduate HS or get her GED. People make mistakes and that is fine with me, but for kids to look up at her, I think it doesn't send that great of a message. If she goes on to get her GED, that would bring her up to an equal level in my eyes.

But truly I pick Clay because of what Brandie said... he can bring down the house in just a few notes!!!! Truly a unique voice and pure talent.

I don't blame the OP for leaving Kelly out of it... I saw both her and Clay at the same time and sadly she just was no where near the level Clay was.

What's sad is that she used to be fabulous (maybe not quite as much so as Clay, but I'm totally biased). Her "Stuff Like That There" for Big Band Night, among other performances, was *amazing.* I think the AI "machine" ground her up. :(

Pssst - hey Ellen - check out my post in the "Least Favorite Singer" thread. ;)

To hold having an out of wedlock child against Fantasia is so unfair. Those people who bring that up, I just have to ask if they've never made a mistake? She may have gotten pregnant and dropped out of school, but she's raising a darling child to the best of her abilities and got her GED. Now she wants to make a better life for them both and I say more power to her for not becoming a welfare mom. Having a child out of wedlock may not have been her most brilliant moment, but she stepped up to the plate and took her responsibilities like a woman. Give her credit and let the hard work she's done to get where she is serve as a role model.

That being said, my vote is still Clay. I thought Fantasia was really the best of the bunch this season but I don't particularly care for her style of singing. As for being an "idol" give me a college educated gentleman any day. Still, that doesn't make Fantasia a bad person.

ITA with gometros. In today's society, I don't think Fantasia is one to portray an "idol" (someone you respect & look up too) due to her poor choices in the past. I think it's great that she seems like she's turning her life around but this is ONLY my opinion, I wouldn't consider Fantasia an "idol." I am not speaking of her God given singing talent, I'm speaking of her life in general. Her past shows that she has made many wrong choices. "Idol" ~ no. Talented ~ yes.

Clay definitely represents an American Idol best. I think he is quite talented too & he has both feet on the ground.

In today's society I would think people would stop putting so much emphasis on title's (a television show title at that) and look at the person for what they accomplished.
So what if she had a child out of wedlock. So what she got pregnant as an teenager. So what she didn't finish school it's not as if she can't go back. She is human as the rest of us.

It's amazing how some people think they are above any mistakes in life, but ya need to get real and realize it could happen to any child in any family no matter how perfect they think they are.

Btw, to think less of someone just because they didn't graduate from hs in my book is so petty, but not surprising.

Btww, it's only my opinion

I guess I don't buy into the "Idol" term either. I don't "idolize" any entertainer but I do respect both Clay and Fantasia for their talent and drive. Neither one of them has had a perfect life (Clay's relationship with his Dad, Fantasia becoming a teenage mom) - but that IS life and they've overcome some obstacles. I wish them BOTH the best of luck in their careers and hope they stay like "real" people.

Hey, and they are both from NC - another point in their favor as far as I'm concerned!

... got her GED.
I admit I didn't watch this season much at all... I heard a bit of the last 10 singers and honestly I didn't like any of them enough to want to watch the rest of the show. I am bitter due to other things so I kind of avoided the show, but hoped they'd find good talent. Anywho... I was under the impression that she did *not* get her GED. Did I hear wrong? Really to me that means a heck of a lot more than anything else that was mentioned (talent aside). I am just curious because if she did get her GED, I think that is wonderful!

I don't remember which show she was on but it was during the round of talk shows she did after she won. It was brought up that she quit school and she said that she did recently get her GED.

Cool thanks... I guess those who were talking about it just a couple weeks ago were wrong on that then.

Clay. His voice just makes me smile! :)

Lori P. :)

If it's based on voice it's Fantasia ,all the way::yes::

If it's based on role model it's still Fantasia for me.I have more admiration for her for raising a child, she could have had the pregnacy terminated but she put her life plans on hold to have the baby instead. Clay is too sacharine sweet and false for me

I agree with that to some extent. I'd love to corrupt him. :) (Although I suspect he would secretly prefer it if HauntedMansionFan did it instead of me.)
