Death on Mission Space....

I just saw it on Fox News.

Even though he met the requirements, I wonder if he maybe had a heart condition that was undiagnosed.

I'm deleting my post. I guess I'm not entitled to an opinion.

Perhaps....he threw up on the ride and choked.

His parent might not have heard him until the ride was done....

I think that it is totally wrong to blame the parents by asking what he was doing on the ride. Some 4 year olds could be ready. Mine aren't, but who am I to pass judgement??? I believe that mother has enough to deal with right now without people saying things like the above post.

What the HELL was a FOUR year old doing on MS???? Dumb *** parents! What is WRONG with some people?!?!?
Please let's not go there. Dumb *** or not (and I lean toward "not"), no parent deserves to bury their child. This is a tragedy, not a case of laying blame.

That is really unfair - he met he height requirements - if I was told my child met the safety requirements of a ride i would not hesitate to let them ride -

I would in my mind think worse case scenario would be that they would be scared - not die

I enjoy intense rides, but I am not going on Mission Space. I believe that I am in good health, but what if I have an undiagnosed medical condition that is exasperated by the ride?

It is really sad. And people are so insensitive. I mean come on.
And the jerks on Yahoo Message boards are horrible. They are saying such mean things.
My heart and prayers are going out to the 4 year old's parents, family and friends. That's a major loss at a place thats supposed to be the HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH. I mean can you imagine trying to have your child be happy and this happens? The shock and awe of it. :(

I agree! He met the safety requirement; how could the parents know it was dangerous?

I'm really wondering what could have possibly happened. I rode Mission:Space and hated it -- I felt like I could barely breathe and was going to throw up -- but I certainly didn't think I was in mortal peril.

I think I would just be broken if I lost my ds, I don't know any other way to put it. I really feel for the poor parents, the child, and everyone who has been affected by this horrible tragedy.

My DH has asthma and rode MS, he had a difficult time on the ride bc he felt like he couldn't breathe--he learned his lesson and will never ride it again. My heart goes out to this little boy's family, however, I would never even consider putting my 4-year-old DS on this ride, even if he met the height requirement. My understanding is that the ride is in an enclosed space, you have an over the shoulder restraint and it is intense. I know my child would go into hysterics and then shock. But that's my child.

This is a horrible tragedy. I think we all must use our good judgement about any ride. Just because a child (or adult for that matter) meets height requirements doesn't mean the ride is appropriate for that individual. As a medical professional, there are many case scenarios playing through my mind that could have caused his death. Only an autopsy will answer those questions. What a horrible memory for his parents and family. Disney is a place filled with magic, not tragedy. It could be one of our fellow DIS'ers. In reading the article, there have been a few others taken for observation since the ride's opening. Perhaps Disney should look at revising this rides restrictions. It's a great thrill ride for many (I have not visited WDW since it opened so I do not speak from experience) and would hate to have this tragedy affect the enjoyment of others. My heart goes out to those parents. Obviously, they went to WDW for a memorable family vacation. I'm sure they weren't thinking of this.

What a horrible tragedy!! We just got back 2 weeks ago and my 6 yr old loved MS. I never thought twice about what could happen to him on it; however, I think maybe Disney should consider raising the height restriction on it. Although raising the height restriction doesn't no one else will get hurt. Maybe the child had something wrong with him that no one knew about. I guess we just have to see what the autopsy shows. Our hearts & prayers go out to his family!

I know this is going to sound amazing - but my DH and I found Mission Space to be boring and not worth a second ride - the beginning was pretty cool but we found the ride predictable and boring -

different people can experience the same thing completely different based on their tolerance level - maybe the mother had ridden it before and like me found it to be less intense than the warnings led you to believe

OMG! I can't believe you really said that! The ride restrictions are posted on just about every ride in DW and my DH has a heart condition but we've been on most of them. We're also both over 55 and have been on Mission Space every time we go to Disney. To blame the parents at this time is totally insensitive. Possibly these parents had never been on it before and the child met the height requirements. They obviously thought it would be ok. Some 4 year olds are ready for some rides and others aren't. You do what you feel is right for your child and no one has the right to judge another except Him.

Maybe they will add an age/weight requirement as well as raising the height requirement? Maybe someone really tall and lanky just doens't have whatever physiological development is necessary to withstand the g-forces and intensity that this ride has.

My heart goes out to the poor family of this child. I can't fathom losing a child.

God Bless :grouphug:

I think the autopsy will report that this child had a heart condition they didn't know about. What a sad, horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to the parents.
