Death certificate and WDW travel insurance question

My 45 year old brother died of a heart attack a week ago today. My mother is too grieved to take her September vacation with my step-dad to WDW. They had purchased a package and the travel insurance. She is making it sound to me like WDW travel insurance wants an original copy of the death certificate. I told her I can't imagine that a faxed copy from my SIL wouldn't be good enough for this kind of situation. Anyone? This has been such a horrible time. I would hope that there would be some flexibility and compassion. I hate to see my mom have to jump through hoops right now when she can hardly drag herself off the floor...:(

I can't answer your question but would like to offer my condolences.

Usually the funeral parlor will order several original copies of death certificates to use for insurance purposes as well as any other situation where an original death certificate would be needed. Can you call the funeral home and see if it can be done? This way, your mom doesn't have to handle it and she can present the certificate for cancellation.

We were surprised how many places required the actual certificate....and would refuse copies. I suppose it's for their protection to do so though.

Gina is right. We went through over a dozen certificates that we got via the funeral home/director. Get the funeral home to order many extra for you as you'll find out over the next 6 months or so that you'll need them.

I'm sorry about the loss of your brother.

First, my condolences, Belle. So young, so sad.

Agreeing with above. Originals, with either the raised stamp or the colored ink stamp (depending on what your his state uses) is required in most financial matters involving a death. And yes, the FH will be able to provide whatever number is needed. I usually recommend a dozen or more. Always seems like something crops up down the road, months later, where another is needed.

My best, again, Belle, my sympathies.

Sorry to hear about your brother.

I've been told it is illegal to make a photocopy of a death certificate probably because the government charges for each original copy.

My dad's name is still on our cable bill because Comcast refuses to change it without an original death certificate and we only have one left. He's been gone almost 11 years! All the other utilities changed it with no problem.

Maybe you can talk her into holding off on the cancellation. Getting away may help.

My mother's been gone 6 years and I have not been able to get her name off the Comcast bill either.

Belle5 - I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. My condolences to you and your family.

My step mom just passed away and the funeral director said better safe then sorry in the amount you order...You'd be amazed at who wants them...

I'm sure the WD Travel Comp. wants an original...just make sure they order quite a few from the funeral director...

You know, I was thinking the same thing. Is she sure she wants to cancel her trip?

Thanks for all of your condolences! My brother was a wonderful, loving, hilarious man and will be terribly missed. (My father died at age 47 of the same thing.)
I had the same thought about suggesting that she not cancel but she had already cancelled when I talked to her. Too late. I think she is one of those people that would just feel too guilty having a good time this soon. I think that in order to get her back in the parks I will have to tell her we need her to come with us to WDW because we need her help with the kids!
Bless her heart...tomorrow she has to fly here to Dallas to participate in her step-grandson's wedding this coming weekend. I can't imagine having to do that and act like "everything's ok" 13 days after the death of your only son...

Belle5, I just wanted to say I'm so sorry about the loss of your brother. I will keep you & your family in my prayers. I can't imagine how difficult it is going to be for your mom next week-end & hope her stepson & others understand how difficult a time this will be for her. Kathy

Belle5: I know exactly what you are going through. My 46 year old brother died July 3rd, 36 days after having been diagnosised with cancer (so we did have a little more warning that you) He was, like your brother--wonderful, loving and hilarious. We had a trip planned for September also--the whole family on a cruise. Mother and Dad, and his wife cancelled the last day before the penalty period, so we didn't have insurance issues. As the date of the cruise draws closer, they are still in agreement that the trip should have been cancelled.

I feel for you--my mother is devastated--my brother was her only son also, and they were very close. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

NCRedding,
Your loss is still very fresh, too. I just wanted to say I'm sorry for you, as well.
Thanks, again, everyone for your thoughts and prayers... My brother used to call me 4-5 times a week. It's hard to imagine not hearing his voice on the other end of a phone line again... this is the toughest thing I have ever known...

I'm sorry for your loss. :(

I'm sorry I have no advice for you but I can not imagine why they would need the original copy. If you purchase insurance, you should be able to cancel your trip, no problem I would think.
