We are staying for 9 nights in May at AKV Savana KV and wondered if there is a way to save money on discounts for the Dining plan or tickets. (AAA etc.) We are not Florida Residents and I have a family of 6 and growing!
There are no discounts on the price of the DDP. DVC members only get discounts on Annual Passes. For discounts on Magic Your Way tickets, you go to AAA, Undercover Tourist or any other authorized ticket seller. If you do get an Annual Pass, you can purchase the Table in Wonderland card for $60 ($85 for FL Residents) that will get you a 20% discount at most table service locations. That discount is also good on adult beverages.

As noted, no discounts. However, there are ways to save money. The first question is whether the DDP is right for you at all. Lots of food and removes some of the flexibility, it also requires more planning. For a stay this long and assuming the DDP makes sense for you at all, I think the best way to save money is to only get if for part of the stay. And given you must get it all of a stay, the only way to do this is to have a split stay, move out, check back in somewhere. Worth it to some, not to others. You may also want to look at the DDE (old name) which gives you 20% discount on most restaurants and includes alcohol as well. You must have an Annual type pass or be a FL resident and there is an extra charge but for a larger group for 9 days, that may be the best option for many.
DH and I are both teachers and since we are union members we are members on a site called Working Advantage. This year, they had discounts on Magic Your Way tickets. They included the 5-, 6-, 10-day tickets. And it included all the options...base, park hopper, park hopper + water parks & more. There may have been a 4-day ticket also but I can't remember.
So if any of you are in a union, try this out. I am hoping they still have this discount available in 2010 when we go back! We did not get it in July because we had a package with the DDP. Now being DVC members we can purchase our tickets anywhere and still get the DDP so we will take advantage of that.
For us, the DDP was worth it in July. We had our 2 sons, ages 3 and 1 with us. All our TS meals were all-you-can-eat so the fact that an appetizer is not included in a la carte restaurants did not affect our family. It was worth it for our 3-year-old alone since those character dinners run about $15 for a child, and the child's plan in 2008 cost only $10 per day, AND he also got a CS meal for lunch and a snack each day. For us it was worth it as well. We were able to do things like get yogurt for dessert at our CS lunches and give it to the baby (I don't always NEED a piece of cake!), or have fruit for dessert. And the character dinners cost around $30 an adult, so the DDP did save us some money in the longrun. We mainly did it though to budget our trip better because we knew how much we would be spending on food.
