When we originally planned the trip my dh wanted to go all out and splurge with the deluxe plan. We are also staying AKL club level. He really wants to try the signature places. I thought that was alot of food and alot of money. At the time money wasn't an issue. Since then my mom and his mom both passed away and neither one of them had life insurance enough to cover their expenses. Dh and I had to step up to the plate for both families and cover costs by dipping into the vacation fund. Now I am trying to find a way to cut costs from our trip and still enjoy. There are 7 of us travelling. (dh, myself, dd15, dd15's friend,dd12, dd 9 and ds3). My dh has only been to disney using the dining plan. I went once without it with the three girls. I was just looking for input as to whether or not we would save money by cutting out the dining plan and paying out of pocket. We are not interested in eating counter service all week.

We had to pay out for my FIL's expenses a while back; so, I know where you are coming from on this one. First, my sympathy goes to you for the parents you lost.

If you have a car, I would get the entertainment book and use coupons from the TS restaurants offered off site. I think you can get a subscription by the month, as well and it's a smaller charge and you print your own coupons for it. You will generally need one coupon for every two adults. The site allows you to view the restaurants ahead of time. You do have to consider not getting lost trying to find the place and the effort to go in and out of Disney proper.

I think the key to cheaper TS on site for Disney without the plan is to go to the cheaper places, select cheaper entress, and go for lunch hour times which is cheaper. Doing breakfast will help, too if you want 2 TS meals a day. Boma's has a nice breakfast buffet. Another exampleof buffet: Biergarten is pretty reasonable in Epcot for lunch. You have to look at the menus and decide what's best on a budget for TS. Lunch buffets include appetizer and dessert; so, you do gain that way by going buffet on those counts. Get tap water for your drinks. You can still get the refillable mug and pay OOP for it. If you don't do buffet all the time, then stick with the entrees only and maybe, share a few desserts and/or appetizers.

A compromise is to do the basic dining plan and pay out of pocket for some of it if you choose to go to a few signature TS restaurants. As long as, you don't go signature everyday you should be money ahead over the deluxe plan. Also, the DP doesn't charge you sales tax and without it you will pay sales tax. The basic plan means you need to do a counter service meal each day. From your post it doesn't sound like you want to do CS at all. If that's the case this way won't work out too good for you. If your party can split up for eats; maybe, you and hubby can go TS with the little ones while the others do counter service. You have to decide if you can trust your 15 year olds by themselves for CS. They may get a charge out of being left alone that way. You can coodinate the times and have a meeting place after the meal, etc.

The way I remember club level at the resort (it's been a while), you have food included on the concierge level of AKL. It's available for all times of the day. We did it at AKL about 5 years ago and the food was wonderful and you really don't have to eat too heavy in the parks, if you use this service at the resort. We started and ended our day there. The drinks were wonderful and I didn't even feel like you needed to get the refillable mugs with club level. The AKL one is particularly good by comparison.

Another way is to go to a standard accomodation and with the money saved go for the deluxe plan if that's what the heart wants. We are gone from our rooms a lot; so, we've decided after many years of going that we are fine with a lesser room. You can switch to moderate or value and save even more on a resort. Of course, the dates would all have to work out for you to change. I'm not sure how easy this will be for you. If the trip is further out, you have a chance on changing to cheaper accomodations.

If you want everything on the highest level, then you'll have to charge it and pay it back later on, if you don't have funds readily available, now. Hopefully, the stimulus check is not already spent for you to help in that way.

Also, I feel this needs to be discussed by the entire family. Maybe, hubby after all that has happened financially would agree to counter service.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply.
We are not totally against counter service. We just don't want to do it for all meals. So we could cut out some of the ADRs we have and do counter service.
As far as the room goes. We got a code for it and the difference for club level and reg sav view room is only 8 dollars a day. The room cost is less than half the cost of our trip. The real expense is the dining plan and park tickets.
I was thinking of doing two value rooms but then I figured we would need the dining plan definately. My thoughts were we could either go no plan or basic dining and save money because we will have the food and drinks available with the club level room.
This is so hard because we are going the week of my dd's 16th birthday and a week after my ds's 4 th birthday and it was to be a nice birthday celebration.
I guess I will crunch numbers some more and see what would work best. We do not want to charge any of the trip so we may cut way back or cancel. I guess time will tell.

We just did a vacation in April AKL CL. I would cut the food plan from your reservation. Deluxe will be way too much food combined with CL--your drinks and breakfast as well as snacks throughout the day and appetizers and desserts are all included. You'd never use all the stuff that comes with CL and all the components of the DDP or DXDDP. We paid OOP for a signature meal for four of us with sharing an appetizer (we'd had a glass of wine and a few apps in the CL), 4 entress, 2 glasses of wine, 2 sodas, and no desserts--we were at Jiko and knew we could just go up and get those desserts after dinner the meal was $180 with tip. We had CS at Mara but the portions were large and we shared it was like $25.00 to feed us all. We ahd a few other meals as well, no one was hungry I put no restrictions on anyone . We were glad we didn't add the meal plan with CL. The DDP would have been @$608 for regular DDP for the 4 of us and my total bill on check out was $443. The other option might be to drop CL and add the regular DDP. But if it were me I'd keep the CL reservation and drop all dining plans to save money. If you have a car you could easily eat some meals off site ot save $$ as well.

I really think that I may drop the dining plan all together. That was my thought from the beginning but my dh really likes the idea of it. We have never stayed Club level before and don't really know what to expect. My dh is a very picky eater. Not in his opinion. He will eat steak, corn and potatoes for every meal. :rotfl2: The kids and I we would eat anything. With our discount code the difference in cost of the room is not as much as it would cost to get the dining plan and down grade rooms unless we changed resorts. With 3 kids that count as adults on the meal plan I don't think they will eat all of the food and will end up sharing anyway. Thanks for the input.
