It no longer remotely resembles affordable if we do the things we want to do while we are there.

I believe that was Walt’s intention to make the parks unreachable for the average family. He didn’t want his nice parks cluttered up with unruly children.

Always something that needs fixing on a house. Hope the termites have moved into the house framing

That sucks. Catching them early is always better than the alternative. With any luck its just dry rot and not actual termites.

It could be dry rot. All of the other boards under the deck looked ok (although it's hard to get under there and get a close look). But it was also treated lumber and shouldn't have decayed like that. It's weird.

Correct. Captain_Oblivious and I are not sworn nemesis'? nemesises? nemesy? nemesissies? Just another age related malfunction between what my brain wants to type, what my fingers do, and what my eyes read.
Thankfully I have my first neurology appointment next Spring. Only 13 MONTHS after the initial referral.
Looks like dry rot. Pressure treated can still rot. If it was termites you would see a travel tunnel from the soil to the effected area. Entomology was a minor in college. I should have stayed with it and been retired by now. Get it checked by a professional if you are still concerned but there should have been tunnelling in the wood as well if it was termites.

Looks like Dry rot to me. Especially with only the top of the boards crumbled, where water gets trapped between your deck boards and the beams.
If they are not ground contact rated, pressure treatment loses its effectiveness after 10-15 years. And trapped water with freeze thaw cycles will make it shorter.

My mind went to termites because I saw bugs early in the summer that were either termites or flying ants. But I haven't found any evidence of tunnels from the ground leading up the foundation or anything. Anyway, thanks for the advice!

Good to know, thanks! My dad and I built this deck roughly 15 years ago, so I guess that would put us on the upper end of the range.

I think my mom has solved the issue. She just texted me and suggest I replace it with...

I don’t know if I can wreck your deck joists better than termites, but I’m willing to give it a try.


Seriously though, hopefully just a joist that needs replacing from dry rot and not* termites.

Morning, fellas! How's it going? Long time no chat, I know, but life's been busy. We'll start with my mom. The last time I was on here, I had mentioned that I had almost lost my mom. Well, she's a lot stronger and have been in a rehab facility doing PT and what not, that is when she's in the mood. She's now done, and we have decided that because of how weak she still is she's going to have to transfer to the long-term care side, aka nursing facility side. She’s not going to like it, but she’s too weak and dad isn’t strong enough to pick her up.

Theater: I'm fairly certain I had mentioned I was in a local production of Evita. Well, it was a HUGE success. 70% of the tickets were sold out during the member pre-sale before tickets even went on sale to the general public. The rest of the tickets were sold out the day the tickets went on sale to the general public. So it sold out in one day. WOW! Shows there have sold out a week before they opened, which is amazing, but I think this was the first for a show to sell out in one day. The show was scheduled for 12 performances, but 3 were added to accommodate the need. If you add the final dress with an invited audience, what we call a "soft opening," that's a total of 16 shows. It was an amazing show, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the cast when it was over. Man, so glad I did that show. The next show I'm in, Newsies, the Broadway Musical, opens Nov. 25th and runs for 4 weeks for a total of 16 shows. Due to the large amounts of kids and teens in this show I suspect an added show or two will be in our future, but we'll see. In this show I get to play Joseph Pulitzer, the main antagonist. I love this role. And while I don’t get to go up directly against my daughter, who plays Albert, I do in an indirect way. So love sharing the stage with my daughter.

Work: I finally started my new job, and what a learning curve I have. Phew! I'm learning all about neurosurgeries and insurances. It's tough, but I am enjoying it so much. I had reach the point in my last job where I wasn't learning anything new and was bored. Now I'm learning lots and loving it. I also love not driving all over the Cape to get to different offices, though I do miss certain locations. I now have one 20 min commute everyday and loving it.

Well, that's all the updates I have for now. I'll try and pop in more often. I know, I've said that before.
