DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Hello strangers. Yes, it’s me, I’m still alive. I hope everyone is doing well.
My last drive by post I mentioned that I was working through the holidays, which I did. I’ve had some time off since and was mostly busy de-Christmas-ing. Got all the decorations put away inside and all the lights off the house. I’ll see how many lights self destruct in the box this year.
Also been busy with a new addition to the family. Wife’s birthday is the week after Christmas (pain in the rear for gift giving). We’ve been talking about getting a second cat for a while and she decided that’s what she wanted for her birthday. We got him a week ago. The introduction to our old cat has not been going that well. We’ve kept the kitten in its own room as the books will tell you and done slow introduction. But our older cat isn’t happy about it and has spent most of the week hissing and growling at us. Anecdotally people have said that can happen but should fade away. I hope so. Anyway, I’ll be back working in a couple days, just to add to the fun.

Morning, Gents! I did my big First Day at Work report last night, so not much to report since then. I am looking forward to getting back to work, so that's a plus.

On a side note, it looks like the loss of the DME at the end of the year is upsetting a lot of people. Thoughts from the guys? I haven't been in 20 years, so I've never experienced the DME, that said, I think I'd be a little upset over losing it if that was a perk I liked. I'm just hoping that after DME ends, Disney will allow Mears to start running busses back to the resorts like the days of old. Sure, we'll have to pay for it, but it could be cheaper than a Lyft....or not, I wouldn't know. Either way I'm not overly upset over it as I've never experienced it. Besides, I go to enjoy the parks and the resorts, anything extra is a bonus.

Welcome back! Happiest of Belated Birthday's to the Mrs. And congrats on getting the new kitten. I'm sure the older cat will come around at some point when he/she realizes the new youngster isn't leaving, even if it's just to tolerate the new kitten.

We went through something similar when we added a new kitten. Our old cat sat at the door growling for a few days and when they were together he exerted dominance for awhile but eventually they were best buds. Unfortunately the kitten only made it about 6 months and for the last couple of days the old cat wouldn't leave the kittens side. I'm sure your cats will figure it out.

I think some of the people who get upset about things like this are a bit out there. Yes it is the loss of something that made you trip easier but it really hasn't been around that long. We used it a couple of times but to return to the airport you had to leave at least 3 hours before your flight and I didn't like that.

I think there are a few things factoring into this cut. First, the pandemic and the reduced crown levels are certainly eating into Disney's bottom line. With fewer people flying right now, this would be an expensive service to maintain. Second, Disney and Brightline(??) have entered into an agreement to build a train stop at Disney Springs for the new high speed line that will connect from the airport so you will still have easy access from the airport. I think as this get closer you will see Disney announce that they will operate buses from the station to resorts to help people out. Third, the contract with Mears was about to expire and I would think Mears would be seeking a long term agreement. At this point in time that is something Disney probably want to avoid. They could also be using it as a negotiating tactic with Mears as they still have a full year before the service ends.

First 10K of the year in the books. Wasn't sure if I could do it given the tendinitis and hip issue. But... body held together enough that I could do it.

Good job! I'm sure the cold weather doesn't make it any easier.

I also hate apple pie, so....

Are you a Communist or something?

The introduction to our old cat has not been going that well. We’ve kept the kitten in its own room as the books will tell you and done slow introduction. But our older cat isn’t happy about it and has spent most of the week hissing and growling at us.

Sounds exciting! Did you try giving the cat more Scotch?

On a side note, it looks like the loss of the DME at the end of the year is upsetting a lot of people. Thoughts from the guys?

That and the loss of extra magic hours seem to take away just about all of the perks for staying onsite. I'm sure they're cutting costs like crazy right now so we'll have to see if things start to come back once the economy/travel starts to rebound.

They could also be using it as a negotiating tactic with Mears as they still have a full year before the service ends.

True. I don't know how far off the train service is, either.

Morning all, and a terrific morning it is. Booked our next WDW vacation at the Boardwalk in December. Never been in December, and I'm hoping the MVMCP returns and the outdoor masks go away by then.

Have an in-person job interview today and virtual interview Thursday. I'm still not sure what to do. I like the idea of a 2/3 day workweek, but I also like the idea making more money. First, I have to get offers, then, I can make those decisions.

Happy Monday, everyone. Good luck on the newest positions, Norm and CCT!

Thanks.

First 10K of the year in the books. Wasn't sure if I could do it given the tendinitis and hip issue. But... body held together enough that I could do it.

Congrats. That you survived the cold was accomplishment enough.

Afternoon guys. Snow here today, bad football weekend with the Bears and Titans but what are ya gonna do. Last week that DS is at home before heading back to school which will suck as it has been great having him around since pre Thanksgiving. Have a good week gents!

Love Dunkn but even not being from Mass or the NE even I know you have Dunkn Coffee. Tea?

Dunkin donuts coffee is my regular go to blend. No sugar or cream. It has a terrific flavor.

Evening, Gents! Well, the first day at my new job is in the history books. It'll be a lot of repetitive type work, but it's a job and I like it. Even though they're not going to force me, I think they're going to strongly suggest I work from home..."Oh, please don't? I can't handle the commute!" :rotfl2: Seriously I think they're going to want me to work from home. Because I'm only a temp, they're not going to give me a desk, so I'd have to use one of the training computers out in the open, not an ideal situation. Also, they're having the IT dept. set me up with all the permissions to work remotely, so I think I'll make the switch at some point. Besides, if no one's going to be in the office then there's no reason for me to be there. The whole reason for me wanting to work in the office was to be seen, but if no one's going to be there, then..... I can still make a huge contribution to the team by working my rear end off, so I'm not worried. Now, training. Boy, I have a lot to learn in a short amount of time. I essentially have a few days to learn and take a test, when everyone else had weeks to learn the same. Granted the test is only 10 questions, but I can only miss 2 questions before I fail. The guy who's training me said that he'd try and help me with the test as much as possible.

Yeah, I'm not a coffee drinker, so tea it is. I also hate apple pie, so....

Good luck on Day 2, studying, and working from home if you can get it. The Department I'm going to is rotating working from home, maybe a week on/ off. That way, if someone comes up positive, they don't have to quarentine the whole department. As PRN, I'll be trained for all units and could be stationed anywhere.

I've started drinking black tea in the day and decaf Green tea in the evening. Just Lipton brand. I'd like to try other flavors, but don't want to buy large quantities.

My condolences on the 2nd cat. I still can't get rid of ours. :sad2:

I never used ME, although, I thought the name tragical express when you leave was funny. My airport, and the next closest, fly into Sanford. We have to drive 2 hours to get to a airport that flies into MCO, and then, flights/ parking cost more at the larger airports. However, we have driven most of our trips.

I've said for years that Disney continues to try to price me out of the market. We used go to WDW twice a year for awhile, but reduced that to once a year awhile back due to the increased cost. I keep thinking it's time to sell, but we got a great deal on our DVC contract. At a certain point, it won't be worth it anymore. But, we still have 21 years left on the contract, and our yearly dues are still cheaper than staying a week in a Holiday Inn on the beach. And, we could still have Hilton Head and Vero Beach Resorts as options. But, if DW would agree, I would move to Cocoa Beach area and drive into WDW daily for the best of both worlds.

That and the loss of extra magic hours seem to take away just about all of the perks for staying onsite. I'm sure they're cutting costs like crazy right now so we'll have to see if things start to come back once the economy/travel starts to rebound.

Except the perk of traffic. When staying offsite on a few occasions, the worst thing was getting back into the car at the end of the day, tired, sweaty, & smelly, and have o drive in the sea of traffic to get back to the hotel. Maybe one of the Disney Springs area hotels may work, as you could at least bus/ walk. The detractors for me, other than mask protocols this year, have been the increased ticket prices and guests/ resort/ park capacity, while the number of parks & mostly # of rides have remained the same. Also, food prices have gone up significantly, and the quality at some has declined.

I knew I liked you for a reason even if you were Navy. :lmao:
Apple isn't my favorite and it can't be store bought....those are almost always horrible.

Hello strangers. Yes, it’s me, I’m still alive. I hope everyone is doing well.
Great to see you're doing okay and good to hear you had work...even if through the holidays.

But our older cat isn’t happy about it and has spent most of the week hissing and growling at us.
Cats are strange....can be the most loveable one minute and the most aloof or spiteful the next

I'm not overly upset, but then again I only used it twice. Most of the time we drove and now that's automatic.
I'm also not surprised. Disney is all about money and if it's something that's costing them more than making them money...sionara. Same with SOTMK...going bye bye the 24th.
With COVID, they've lost a lot of money or at least gross revenue and reduced a LOT (staff, rides, shows, dining). Not surprised since the buses, fuel, drivers probably cost way more now than the revenue they get from making it easier for people to get there.

Unfortunately the kitten only made it about 6 months and for the last couple of days the old cat wouldn't leave the kittens side. I'm sure your cats will figure it out.
Didn't know that...sorry.

Second, Disney and Brightline(??) have entered into an agreement to build a train stop at Disney Springs for the new high speed line that will connect from the airport so you will still have easy access from the airport.
This.
Forgot (not sure how since the railway is along side the toll road near our house[528]). Since the railway will be going to DTD and likely is costing Disney nothing, it makes sense to discontinue something as expensive as DME.

Dunkin donuts coffee is my regular go to blend. No sugar or cream. It has a terrific flavor.
coffee and terrific flavor is an oxymoron. ;)

Afternoon all! Well Alabama once again proves there's Alabama and everyone else............. Not surprised by the DME announcement. Between Uber services and the likelihood of more folks driving vs flying in the near future. We used it for several years and the kids when little thought it was great riding a Disney bus and watching the cartoons but I hated the 10 stops before getting you to your resort and 10 extra stops on the way back to the airport so we started to use Happy Limo and love their service.

Welcome back Randall, or sorry your trip ended
Stay safe and have a good one!

I think I may like the Early Entry as you can take advantage of any Park on any day with this. Now it's only for 30 minutes but gets ya head start and again, to every park on every day. We are morning folks so not have extra nighttime hours doesn't hurt us. It's all change and some things will be improvements and some things will crash.

Speaking of crash - are you guys seeing these horrendous Harmonious barges just trashing the views of World Showcase?

Afternoon/evening all.

Nice seeing you Jeff.
Hopefully the cat situation will work itself out. Meanwhile, congrats on the addition.
On a side note, it looks like the loss of the DME at the end of the year is upsetting a lot of people.
Yup.

I do use it and like it. But... Losing it isn't going to make me lose sleep either.
I mean... not many places in the world that you can land at the airport and expect luggage pick-up and a "free" ride right to destination.
I'm interested to see what will happen in the next year. Will Disney get a better deal from Mears and revert back? Will Brightline make up for it? (Well... yes and no. You'll get to Disney a lot faster... but you'll be in DTD and have to get to your resort from there... so overall it may take longer... and will involve a transfer... which may be a colossal pain with bags..)
Good job! I'm sure the cold weather doesn't make it any easier.
Congrats. That you survived the cold was accomplishment enough.
Thanks, guys. Actually it's been pretty warm here the last couple weeks. I think when I ran that it was around -8C/17F, so no issues there.

Hey, Gents! Well, day two is down in the history books. Spent all day on the computer watching training videos and working in the training program. It's interesting, a lot of what I'm being trained to do doesn't apply to my job. All I do is look for certain bits of information in faxes that come into one program, transfer that information into the system and then upload it into the electronic records program, that's it. And the information I'm looking for isn't that much either. What I'm being trained on is registration, scheduling and how to take payments in the system. I'm hoping that with all this training they'll keep me and transfer me to a different department where I can utilize this training. Even if they don't, I've been trained on the program and that makes me more marketable....at least in my eyes. :teeth: Well, that's all I've got. Have a good evening.

TTFN

I think some of the people who get upset about things like this are a bit out there. Yes it is the loss of something that made you trip easier but it really hasn't been around that long. We used it a couple of times but to return to the airport you had to leave at least 3 hours before your flight and I didn't like that.

Exactly. I'm more upset over how much it costs to take a Disney World vacation than I am for losing ME, something I've never taken, by the way. I was happy when Mears ran their regular buses, probably because I didn't know any better. I go for the experience of being in Disney World and enjoying the theming, rides, the resorts and just being on vacation away from the house. I really do love the theming of the different lands and rides.

They could also be using it as a negotiating tactic with Mears as they still have a full year before the service ends.

At the end of the day Disney's a business that needs to make money to survive, and this last year hit everyone hard, including the almighty mouse, so cuts will be made. And when this train eventually does get up and running, Disney will have to come up with something to get guests to the resorts because luggage, if I remember, isn't allowed on their buses.

Are you a Communist or something?

I have been accused of being one, but no, I'm not a Communist....that I can assure you.

Sounds exciting! Did you try giving the cat more Scotch?

:rotfl2: I'd love to see a drunk cat.

The extra magic hours as a loss for me, I admit, but we can only hope that comes back when things go back to normal.

Morning all, and a terrific morning it is. Booked our next WDW vacation at the Boardwalk in December. Never been in December, and I'm hoping the MVMCP returns and the outdoor masks go away by then.

That's awesome! Always wanted to do Disney at Christmas time, but horrible time of year to travel from the northeast. Also, that's a prime gigging season for the Mrs.

Have an in-person job interview today and virtual interview Thursday. I'm still not sure what to do. I like the idea of a 2/3 day workweek, but I also like the idea making more money. First, I have to get offers, then, I can make those decisions.

Tough spot to be in, man. Make a list of pros and cons for the offers and see where that leads you. Not much help, I know, but that's all I've got.

That's not a bad way to do it really. Half in and half out? Smart. And being able to go anywhere is nice because it'll keep things interesting.

I've started drinking black tea in the day and decaf Green tea in the evening. Just Lipton brand. I'd like to try other flavors, but don't want to buy large quantities.

I love tea, especially ice tea. However, in the winter, when it's nice a cold outside, hot tea comes out. Mmmmmm

How long of a drive is it for you? I think it'd a 24 hour drive for me if I did it.

The cost is what's getting to me. My DW and I agree that we'll take a trip down, but once the final cost is in I doubt we'll be doing another any time soon.

I knew I liked you for a reason even if you were Navy. :lmao:
Apple isn't my favorite and it can't be store bought....those are almost always horrible.

:rotfl2: I actually like apples, it's when they've booked and spiced up (I guess is what happens in apple pie) that I can't stand. Never liked it. Blah! :crazy2:

I'm not overly upset, but then again I only used it twice. Most of the time we drove and now that's automatic.

Yep, exactly. I've never used it, so I'm not missing out on anything. They'll be other ways of getting down there...I'm not worried.

coffee and terrific flavor is an oxymoron. ;)

:rotfl2:

See, now you're being realistic about this. Would you just stop that?! I look at things practically. It's gonna change whether we want it to or not, it's how we deal with it. Do I like all changes? No, I don't, but I can't sit there and mope about for ever and say I'm not going to go down just because they stopped something. This train service might wind up being a blessing in disguise. And as for guests getting let off at DTD? My guess is that Disney will have shuttles/buses ready to take guests to their resorts. They'll going to have to. Luggage isn't allowed on the resort buses now, so.... :confused3 But that's just a guess.

This is just what a communist would say, buddy.
Or should I say...

Comrade.
:rotfl2: I'd love to see a drunk cat.
I would too. I just don't want to be anywhere near one.
See, now you're being realistic about this. Would you just stop that?!
Sorry. I'll revert to raging instead.

WHERE DOES DISNEY GET OFF CANCELING DME?!?!? THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS! THAT'S IT! THEY'VE LOST A VALUED CUSTOMER! I WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN! EVER!!!!!

Unless I get a pin code. Then... maybe.
Probably.

Okay, even without the pin code.

I blame the Dole Whip float.
My guess is that Disney will have shuttles/buses ready to take guests to their resorts. They'll going to have to. Luggage isn't allowed on the resort buses now, so.... :confused3 But that's just a guess.
And if Disney doesn't... there'll be tons of Uber's, Taxis, Lyfts just waiting to gobble up all those fares.

I've seen a drunk dog, it wasn't pretty.

You've seen a drunk dog?! How'd it act?

Sounds like the training you're getting could lead to more duties down the road?

That's what I'm hoping. They're spending all this time and money to train me, why not keep me on and move me to where I can be of use? They're always looking to fill open slots. The key would be to find a position that has enough hours in the week where I can actually make money. I know people who have worked two part time jobs there until they found a full time job.

This is just what a communist would say, buddy.
Or should I say...

Comrade.

You Americans are so stu...er, I mean you're funny. I am red blooded American through and through. :lmao:

I would too. I just don't want to be anywhere near one.

I wouldn't want to be near a drunk cat either.

Sorry. I'll revert to raging instead.

I blame the Dole Whip float.

That's more like it. And points for blaming the Dole Whip. :thumbsup2

And if Disney doesn't... there'll be tons of Uber's, Taxis, Lyfts just waiting to gobble up all those fares.

Oh you know it. Everyone and their aunt and uncle with a car will be there waiting to collect fares.

Morning fellas from a cold and soggy London.

Back to work today after a mini break, that consisted of, er, home schooling for the kids.
Had fun watching some of the antics on the dads, not without a twinge of remorse that I wasn't out there, but good too see a bit of normal. If normal is eating a Kitchen sink by yoursef.

On the Disney announcements, I'm in Darcys camp. Disney is a product. They will amend that product as they see fit, and if anyone doesn't like it there are other places in the world. The whole chest beating thing some are doing on FB and other parts of here over a coach service, that, lets be honest, used to take about 2 hrs to do a 25 minute drive seems a little bit OTT. Walt wouldn't be turning in his grave, or his freezer for that matter. Is it a more expensive proposition than a few years ago? Absolutely. If it was cheaper, would we all be screaming at Disney for over capacity? You betcha sweet heiny we would. The EMH is a shame, but but it's really weird in Disney, there are many folks who try and "out fan" each other, with exclusivity, and the I"I have more Disney experiences than you" which I can never understand, it's just bragging. If you like it and it suits your budget, go. If it doesn't, don't go. If you want to go and can't afford it, as harsh as it sounds, that's really not Disney's problem to fix. Wow. I'm a capitalist. Didn't see that comin'.

CCT, hope the job is going well mate, Nice to hear from your Jeff baby, I need your pick for the next 2 playoff rounds so I can go the other way and pay my mortgage off. Good luck with the new moggy.
Pkondz, nice job on the runs
Doc, always a pleasure to hear from ya, hope everything's OK your end,
Chief, welcome back.

I could never get drunk on gin...one of the few alcohols I can't handle the taste of. One can't get drunk from it if one can't keep it in their stomach.
;)
I agree mate, love the smell of it, the taste is like engine oil.
