‘Morning all…
Spent the weekend up in the mountains with the young’en. An excellent diversion, some quality time spent and we got to see and hear a lot of really great performances. Sure beats working.
Sounds nice and always good to see the kids ain't it.
I don't have a team myself (there was no MLS in FL when I was a kid and there still ain't any in the Carolinas)so I'm good which ever way it falls out, but...
Historically speaking it's possible that I may just side a smidgen more with the Cubs.
:thumbsup2 I knew you are a good man
Ok I'm having multi quote issues on the phone. Took the kid on for an appointment with one of his surgeons today. Ended up killing midday of a day because we decided to visit the good folks at the PICU and NICU while we were close. It was great to see everyone and let them see how well he's doing now.
Great to hear DS is doing good!
Morning Guys.

Halloween costume as Bruce Wayne's parents?

I've been doing my best to not get political, and being Canadian I don't have any direct investment in it, but I'm just fascinated by this election, kind of like if your neighbour drove his car through his house
We're just hoping we don't have to wear the "Stoopidest vote of the year" hat at the UN Xmas Party. America is our last roll of the dice.
Is it National Radiohead Video day?

Nice one, sounds awesome. Is it not getting a bit chilly up there?
:faint: Are those trainees ready yet?
Pkondz - What happened to the pretty trainee from about 100 pages ago?
Cool that you decorate, and props for the Disney villain centre piece
Cheers buddy. There is a ton more Disney shizzle up now, including an entire wall of chalk drawings, and Disney villain gravestones. I am a frustrated Imagineer.

Welcome to the back half of the week, all.

The School of Music at Western Carolina University hosts an annual regional music competition. Their location puts the campus only a couple hours travel time from five states and lets them draw in a lot of the better schools in the area. Net result: a lot of fine entertainment and even more truly excellent music to be experienced.
And then as a bonus we get to see the POTM perform as well...
Twice...

As one of the better athletic bands in the US, that's a good thing.

That sounds like a heck of a good way to spend a day.

I like it, but it wouldn't solve the problem.
The individuals involved are just a manifestation of the real problem which is the divisions in our culture.
That ain't going away any time soon.

Good luck.... seriously.

Yes it i...
Wait?
You get a trip on the books that we haven't heard about yet?
(or am I just not paying attention)

Not paying attention.

Kay's 16th birthday. She wants to go to FL for Spring break. Probably going to WDW for a couple days (plus Uni, plus... ?) It was in the update prior to the last chapter on my TR.

They must love seeing him. How's he doing?

Pkondz... sorry you're in pain and at work. But I'm just going to rub it in that I avoided going into work at all today.

Wow. That's just... mean. You're a cruel, cruel man, Andy.

Maybe it's time for alcohol. It does fix everything.

Best idea I've heard all week.

Good to hear it's getting better. Hopefully you can get away from work for a while and rest up.

Well, that didn't work out so well.
Wound up working a whoooole lot in the last day and a half.
(23 hours out of 32)

Morning Guys.

Cute.
Although at first glance I thought "Wish list? Is that Donald and Hilary? But who's the kid?"

Pkondz - What happened to the pretty trainee from about 100 pages ago?

She quit about 90 pages ago.
Man, that's a good memory you got.

The life of Cj??

CJ, I think Zerf hacked your account. He's the only one I've ever seen get excited about a toilet installation.

The new crapper goes in tomorrow morning. Also having them look at the main valve to the john so it should be all systems go tomorrow afternoon.

If only Zerf was down here.

Will be rooting for the Cubbies. Hoping for a good series.

Took the Pirate Princess to WDW on her 16th. Brought five of her friends with us, now that was an experience. Great place to celebrate.

::yes:: I remember reading about that.

Facebook finally posted some of the picks from the shark tagging trip.

A Rainbow so a good omen starting out

The fishing lines. It is kind of interesting how they worked it out to be as easy as possible on the sharks. Steve and I are in the far background.

My UK friend setting one of the lines, they were using barracuda as bait. A shark delicacy.

\

The Lemon (about 6 feet)

Taking a clip from the Lemon for DNA analysis. You see the tag from a previous encounter in Bimini. They clipped it because it was in an awkward place and since they tagged it, all the info was recorded under their tag.

The kid taking blood

Success

Shark blood coagulates quickly so you have to separate the plasma from the red blood cells within a couple of minutes of taking the sample.

And the star of the trip an 8+ foot Tiger.

Y'know the thing about a shark, he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'... until he bites ya. And those black eyes roll over white, and then... oh, then you hear that terrible high-pitch screaming' (Admit it you did the Quint voice while reading this).

She was a mature female. I noticed the bite marks on her back next to the tail fin so she has mated. Male Tigers are not too gentle when they mate. On this one they invested in an acoustical tag that pings when it passes receptors that are located all up and down the coast. If you saw the Shark Week, Tiger Beach episode there was one scene when they downloaded the stored data and cleaned one of the receptor buoys they maintain in the Bahamas. They make a small incision in the shark and the tag will work for a few years. They also gave her vitamin and a couple of antibiotics shots. You could tell they were pretty psyched about landing a Tiger.

All in all and interesting trip.

You know it!

So... would the pirate shark blood drawing princess care to share the purpose is of that? I mean, I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason, but just curious what it is that they aren't getting in the wild and why a one time dose like this is even worthwhile?

Looks like an incredible experience for you, CJ. Not only to get to be around something really cool and interesting like a shark tagging operation, but it had to be a proud dad moment seeing your daughter out there doing what she loves.

I talked to the guy that did the workup on the Tiger and he explained, the antibiotics were precautionary, normally sharks are pretty resistant to all that. It just makes sure an infection doesn't start at the incision site. She was on the boat for a while (actually in real time it was not very long) and the vitamin shot was to give her an energy boost for when she got back in the water.

They monitor the shark's fitness all the time it is on board. In one of the pictures, a kid had a syringe near the shark's eye. When the shark first comes on board, they shoot saltwater into the eye and reflexively their nictitating membrane (the white eyelid that flicks over the eyes) covers the eyes. If it doesn't fire immediately, they know the shark is under stress so they either only do a few things or let the shark go right away. They also do the same thing before they release the shark to make sure it is still doing OK. Hammerheads need to be treated with kid gloves while it doesn't bother Nurse sharks at all. Nurse sharks are also the toughest to work on believe it or not.

And yes, it was really cool to see the kid wrangle sharks and do the blood-work. She warned us that she couldn't be talking to us all the time because she was working. We pretty much left her alone and let her work and socialize with her fellow students. I basically just stepped back and watched. Took every ounce of my being though to not ask the guys running the show how she was doing.

Not too much so. It's been staying in the high 70sF. That Saturday a cold front did roll through and it only got up to about 68F. But the sun was beating down hard through the slightly thinner air so it was still fairly warm and pleasant. Now the moment the sun actually dropped back behind the the ridge west of us the sky was still bright blue but the shadows of the mountains cast an instant twilight on the stadium. It was like flipping a switch. At nearly the same instance the light changed the wind picked up and the temperature also plummeted about fifteen degrees and kept dropping. It only got down to about 41F or 42F but we did break out the jackets at that point.

That sounds like a heck of a good way to spend a day.
It most certainly was. It's not everybody's cup of tea, but we're all band geeks in my house.
We've been hitting that particular competition anally since 2009.
I might have to go back out this weekend and watch the state championships.
The local school has a very good shot at taking another championship this year.

Good luck.... seriously.
And we're gonna' need it.

D'oh!
I did know that, I just forgot that I knew that.
Danged "Old Timer's" disease

Proof she's putting that schooling into practice.
Looks like y'all had an interesting voyuage.

Well of course...
I don't see how you could keep yourself from it.

Thanks for all the shark photos cj. Interesting stuff.

Nope. At least I don't think so. I couldn't hear myself over the screaming in terror.

Long day. Left at 7:00 AM. Made it to the tennis court at 5:00 PM. Played until 7 PM. Home, showered, World Series. Cubs are down 0-2. :scared1:

Cool picture and thanks for info. And, like Andy said, cool dad moment.

Well, occasionally one learns something new about a DisDad. Hey, hit it whichever way you want. Dowhatyoulike.
