So CCT mentioned having long commutes. What's the longest commute you've had for a job?
I don't want to hear "I drove halfway across the US" or "I flew from Chicago to Tel Aviv"... I'm talking about a daily (or at least 2-3 times/week) commute that you did for work.

If you flew Chicago/Tel Aviv and back 2-3 times a week, that counts. But if you're a pilot, you're not commuting to work... you are working.
distance about 80 miles, time 90 minutes

There are still folks up this way digging out from Helene. My young'en for one. They live in a basement apartment of a house up on one of the NC mountains south of Ashville. The house took several trees to the roof, that wrecked the center of the structure and proceeded to flood the basement. On the upside, they weren't living down in one of the valleys and everyone in the house is fine. The gal who owns the place is stuck living in one corner of her home, though. The basement is unlivable, but thanks to having renter's insurance, the boys at least have a spot in a 1-star motel for another week or so. Having gotten what's left of their belongings is in a storage locker and sending their critter down here to live it up at my house fixes a couple more of their issues. Both of them being back at work now solves another major one, so incomes have only taken slight hits thus far. Housing is obviously still in flux, but it's all a work in progress. We'll take our wins where we can get them.
Glad they survived. Having lived through back-to-back floods in '21 and '22 I can safely say that things will never be the same for the area or the people. The mental/emotional things take even longer than infrastructure to begin to heal. We are still missing one person they never found.

Day two of vacation of four. Drop the wife off at Boardwalk on Thursday morning. We went to Springs and had lunch at Morimoto. I went to work and her and her girlfriend hung out at Boardwalk. Friday, I was working and they spent the day at Food and Wine. ( more wine than food I think lol) Saturday morning I picked the kid up at her apartment, met the hung over food and winers for breakfast at Alforno at the Boardwalk. Came home and went swimming the rest of the day.
This morning, I dropped the two off at the Sanford airport. The homes around lake Jesup are still flooded. That area is always swampy but the water is still up the frons of the palm trees. It had that swampy smell to it. Every time a storm comes through, they get flooded.
She flew back to Pa for the week, she’ll be home next Sunday. I stopped at Lowe’s this morning on the way back and had to buy a dishwasher. Got that home and installed it. The next twos days, I’m not doing nothing. lol

mmmm... nice.

Don't think I've been there. Definitely not for breakfast. How was that?

1. That's never cheap. 2. Impressed you did it yourself.
It’s pretty good. They make whatever you want for the most part as long as they have the ingredients. They also take care of cms with a pretty good discount.
Dishwashers are pretty easy. I have some experience in plumbing, electrical and HVAC.

Okay, I can see that. I'd tackle a dishwasher repair, I think. Actually I've done some small repairs. But not installing a brand new one. Unless there wasn't another option. Just wouldn't want to mess it up.

It’s real easy. They haven’t changed in years other than the water connections is now a standard hose thread, like your garden hose. Electrical, white to white, black to black, green to green. Drain line you hook up the same as the old one. Either into a garbage disposal or a branch tailpiece that’s already there. Level it up, screw it in. Either to the underside of the counter or the side of the cabinet. We have marble countertops so I screwed it into the cabinets.
Turn on the water and the breaker and your done.

Yep, I could do that. ::yes::

Yup, thats about it. Depending on how its set up you may have a plug in not have to hardwire it but wont know till you pull it out.
And please make sure you turn off the switch before you start playing with the electricity.

I had a customer that I sold too when I lived in Pa in my other life, very heavy Italian accent so you have to use your imagination. I would stop at his shop every morning, he made “coffee”, more like mud. lol.
I had time so I went on a job with him. It was just a bad receptacle. I asked him if he wanted me to kill the breaker. He said, “ stop being such a girl.” I laughed, went down the basement, found the panel and the breakers weren’t marked. I walked back up and he had the cover off, the receptacle pulled out and he was taking off the wires. I said, the breakers weren’t marked, that’s live. He just glanced at me and kept going. I said, your nuts. He said, with a few words added that I can’t write here, “ what are you touching, don’t touch everything. One wire at a time and don’t touch everything. I don’t have time to run up and down the steps all day. You only get zapped a few times before you figure out, don’t touch that at the same time you touching this. So you get zapped, it’s good for you, puts hair on your chest. “. lol.
Same guy that was working on a septic pumping tank in a commercial building. Long story, the pump in the bottom of this tank kicked on after his helper grabbed the discharge pipe. Tank is 8 foot deep, 15 foot around. Pump reminds you of a sump pump on steroids. The contents of the tank, came up like a wave and went over is head, he was covered. Told the helper to go in the truck and get some rags. He wiped himself off and finished the job. Then went home and took a shower. He was covered in the septic tanks content.
He’s 71 now and still works seven days a week. They don’t make them like him anymore.

Got to love the old-timers
Been working construction since I was 13 so I have worked with all types.
My dad finally closed his company and "retired" at 76. He gets to spend time with his cows now and "only" works 30-40 hours a week on side jobs.

He was in the back of his dump truck at the shop. He screams at one of his helpers, get me a broom, shovel and a garbage can! Kid walks away. We were talking and after a few minutes realized the kid isn’t back. Screams the kids name. He comes over, shovel, garbage can no broom. He said I can’t find the brooms. He said you walk by them 20 times a day, they’re behind you. Kid grabs the broom and hands it to him. He threw it at the kid just missing his head. He said, maybe if I hit ya in the head with the broom you’ll remember where they are next time. lol.
I’d love him to come work here. lol. 98 out of 100 of these kids won’t make it in the real world. lol. Couldn’t imagine them working for an old timer. lol.
The one morning he was complaining his back hurt, couldn’t figure out why. I said maybe it has something to do with you just dead lifting a 300 pound generator and putting it in your truck by yourself and your 65 years old. I don’t have time to ask for help. They just screw it up anyway. lol.

It would have to be another life. They outlawed slavery a while back.

And no… no they don’t.

Geez. That was my dad too.

That wouldn’t go over so well in a corporate setting… but… effective.
Couldn’t imagine them working for an old timer.
Nope. Not a chance.
