DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Welcome Kyle. Another SEC dad has joined, which is a good thing. You still celebrating the win?

24 hours of celebrating, then back to business. It was funny, after the game was over we were sitting on the couch fairly quiet and I asked my wife, "Do you remember when we would jump up and down in excitement when we won a National Championship? Now it's just kind of like, oh yay, we won again". I ordered my little replica Waterford crystal football to round out the collection, but that's about it.

Only one???????
One additional. Although I do try to keep it to 2 (thick cut) a day. Gotta watch that figure :rotfl2:

Tub too? Couldn't tell for sure.
The tub is what started the reno, when they bought the house the tub had a cut out in the side (owner had mobility issues) so it was shower only. It was supposed to be remove old tub and in with the new, but there was some really crappy work hidden behind the walls when I removed the tub. So I gutted everything except the outside wall. pushed one , wall out into the hall way about 10 inches. This allowed me to get rid of a pocket door(only 20 inches wide) and install a real 28 inch door. Then moved plumbing for tub and vanity. Installed new tub, shower/tub faucet and surround, replaced wall board, crack filled and painted. Then replaced flooring, installed new vanity, mirror and light. It ended up giving them a slightly larger bathroom with a tub my granddaughter wanted and a door I can fit through with out turning sideways.
PIC of old tub with cutout.

I don't think there is one...no matter how expensive, there will be somone who wants and can afford it.

It's all about the prestige, I guess.

Before this latest round of cuts, I had seriously been thinking of staying off site next time anyway. I like being in the bubble, but not sure I find much benefit anymore.

I always prefer staying onsite. Part of the magic, etc. But it was nice having the perks too (and not having to rent a car). Now you get to go in 30 minutes early, so I guess you get one more ride than everybody else.

Hello Gentlemen. New DISDad here. I've actually been in the FB group for a while but realized I've never posted in this thread. I am Kyle from Alabama and am addicted to traveling to Disney. Next trip is 2/12. Sad I missed the most recent meetup but hope I can come to a future one!

Welcome, Kyle!

Morning gents.
I'm the spare person today at work, which means if no one calls in sick, or whatever, I can stay home!!

So... I'm typing this up at work... :sad2:

Why am I not surprised?

Any kidding aside, winters do seem (overall, on average) to be warmer up here than when I was a kid. I remember it being much colder, much longer with much more snow on average.
Then again... maybe that's just a case of "I had to walk 10 miles to school through six feet of snow... uphill both ways!" syndrome.

I don't think it's just you. We get a lot less snow in the winter than we used to. Some winters go by with none at all.

NHL started up again last night. I'm sure Mike will agree with me that in at least two of the games the wrong team won.

Destroying the Penguins is never a bad thing.

Staying on-site will always be my first choice as it is more convenient and I love staying immersed in the Disney theming. I stay in enough hotels that something themed is always nice to have.

Always my preference, too. I guess I'll just look for the room discounts.

Morning from an overcast, but warm Westfield NB. finished my DD bathroom reno last night, just some trim left to do, Sil is taking care of that.

Nice work!

Nice one there Rob, looks great. Was it a long job turning it through 90 degrees? That takes some skills, playa.

:rotfl2:

On one hand, working at the hospital 2/3 days a week gives me the time off, but I have to work with sick people all day. Every day. And, I would always get the 10% of difficult patients, as that would be my role. On the other hand, it would be upselling customers, which has it's own headaches.

"I know, you just got a kidney transplant. But wouldn't it be great to go for the liposuction, too? I mean, they've already got you open."

I strongly suspect that when I go next (after DME is discontinued and Brightline is in service) that I'll take the train to DTD then Lyft.
But! If the plan is to see more of FL... then car rental from the airport might be the way to go. Might not. Would have to crunch the numbers.

The parking charges would factor into that. It is nice having the freedom of a car, though.

It was funny, after the game was over we were sitting on the couch fairly quiet and I asked my wife, "Do you remember when we would jump up and down in excitement when we won a National Championship? Now it's just kind of like, oh yay, we won again".

I'm a Philadelphia sports fan. I have no idea what you're talking about.

Why am I not surprised?
Yeah... me neither. :sad2:

None.... at... all......... :faint:

I figure the most likely scenario is Brightline to DTD, then something (Lyft? Disney transpo?) to resort. When I'm ready to go other places, car rental from the Car Care Center. (done that before.)

Evening, Gents! Hope all are well. Another great day at work, this time actually training for the job I'll be doing. I never thought I'd like working from home, still prefer to go into the office, but after talking with the co-worker who's training me, it seems like the supervisor doesn't mind people working earlier hours, like 6am to 2pm, as long as 8 hours of work had been done. It appears she does that quite often as the system isn't overloaded with users and easier to work in. I won't do that right away, but if it's ever offered to me I'll take it. So this working from home thing might be nice after all. Well, that's all. Have a good evening, gents.

Morning gents.

Well, did ya wind up staying home?

Not much to tell, I'm American, just like you. I live here.

Good ol' 'Murican! :thumbsup2

Amen, brother.

I can't wait to get rid of the masks. What's going to be funny is when we finally get rid of the masks and I go to work and have to re-meet everyone because I won't recognize them.

So I'm not the only one? Even here the snow fall is down a bit I think, I know rain fall is.

Now you're talking.
Except when I had sweet tea in KY (or NC), the only thing I found lacking was... not enough sugar.
Ice tea up here is...Take water. Add sugar. Wave a tea bag at it.

:lmao: Just the way my brother likes it.

I wonder if the announcement had the rental car companies going :cheer2:

Along with Lyft and any other car ride service. Heck, I've even started looking into other transportation options and I haven't even planned the trip yet.

:thumbsup2

Your expense? Or will you get reimbursed?

Mine, but it's not that much. I bought two Acer 24" screens for $109, so I don't think that's that bad. And hey, tax write off. And if I ever can get hire on full time it'll help out for when I need/can work from home. I can also use it for editing photos in Lightroom and Photoshop.

One set is colder.

And paler. :rotfl:

And, it's Thursday. Interview went well this AM. It is 40+ hours a week, is in the private sector, decent starting money, with promising promotion/ commission money. It's a 4 layer interview process management trainee position. Hopefully, I'll make it to the next level. On one hand, working at the hospital 2/3 days a week gives me the time off, but I have to work with sick people all day. Every day. And, I would always get the 10% of difficult patients, as that would be my role. On the other hand, it would be upselling customers, which has it's own headaches. So, I'm back to those crossroads of working 3 to 5 years for more money to not work again or working PRN for an undetermined amount of time. Honestly, I really can't decide. Still, I currently do not have any offers, so I'll just have to wait and see.

That's tough decision, man.

Glad to hear work is going well. I have no desire to work from home. I don't even like doing these interviews at home. I know...Get off my lawn.

I don't either, but I did find out that the supervisor for this department doesn't mind people working different hours, as long as it's 8 hours and the work gets done. The supervisor starts work at 6am and ends at 2pm....that's something I can easily do, and do it from home. Still prefer to head into the office, but I'd take that schedule if it means I can work from home.

I read something that the ozone layer hole had closed and CO2 emissions have decreased dramatically with COVID restrictions. Don't know if that is good, bad, or even true.

I just read in the Scientific American's website that the hole did close, so that's good news. And from what I understand, CO2 emissions around the world are down because of Covid, another good thing.

You may be shot for an offense like that here. :lmao:

Boil water, put in lots of tea bags, let steep for 5 to 7 minutes, pour sugar into hot water to dissolve, then pour over ice to cool down.

I'd definitely be shot in the south for not putting sugar in my tea. They may even burn me at the stake for witch craft.

It's not like they didn't charge before for parking. They just rolled the price into their ticket costs. If they had done the same this time, no one would have complained - well, maybe not as much complaining.

Nothing's really free at Disney World. You just pay for it with higher ticket prices and resort prices.

Happy Friday, fellas!

Well, I've reached another milestone telling me I'm officially an old fart. My daughter moves away to college tomorrow. It's 4 months later than it should have been, and I'm grateful we got those extra four months, but I think she's ready for it and itching to start doing things on her own. Can't blame her, really--I was the same way. I'm excited for her. Hopefully it will work out with the COVID restrictions.

And, we made it to Friday, which is really just like every other day this week.

I really don't envy you your choices.
I dunno... I just couldn't see myself working 40+ hours/week after I retire. YMMV of course.

That's where I'm struggling. My plan has always been to retire from government ASAP and then get another full time job to retire at age 60. As DW doesn't plan to leave this area, there isn't much point in working 40+ hours a week to buy a vacation home. So, what am I working for?

Might have to try that.

Some of the harder core enthusiasts will add an extra boiling step, letting the tea steep longer for a more intense flavor, then bringing the water back to boil, then pouring in sugar to dissolve it. I only do that if I forgot the tea on the stove and it cooled too much.

They also sell ice tea makers, like coffee makers, that prompt you with ice fill lines and # tea bags and then drip hot water. I don't think those dissolve the sugar as well.

I just need to figure out how to make money from this gravity alternating talent :lmao: :lmao:

If you do, send me a finders fee.

Well, we still burn try to burn down the city when UK wins basketball championships. As for football, the best thing to come out of KY was Lamar Jackson playing for UL. :lmao:

"I know, you just got a kidney transplant. But wouldn't it be great to go for the liposuction, too? I mean, they've already got you open."

:lmao: I guess that should have read at the other job, I'd have to do upselling.

I don't know the Canadian Health care hospitals, but most of us haven't encountered a social worker at the hospital. They are routinely involved in transitional care for elderly patients, i.e., home health or nursing home referrals. But, they are also involved in the pediatric substance abuse (moms/ kids), ER spouse/ partner abuse, behavioral/ psychological unit for suicide ideation, etc. The hospital has its own cancer center and there is a kidney dialysis place in town, which would just be routine referrals a nurse would make. So, what to do? Work with these patients at the hospital or try to make money upselling customers at another business? Both have their challenges.

Sounds like things are working well for you at the new job. I could handle working from home if it were the right job, and the flexibility of hours helps as well. Good luck.

I just read in the Scientific American's website that the hole did close, so that's good news. And from what I understand, CO2 emissions around the world are down because of Covid, another good thing.

I guess. I read an article that pondered if CO2 emissions was even the best way to measure the change in climate. We was an actual climate scientist instead of a FB scientist, so it didn't make any sense. :lmao:

Congratulations to her. My oldest still doesn't know what she wants to do.

If it's any consolation, you reached old fart status years ago.

Morning gents.
Called in sick today. Just needed some rest. I'm not even all that sure why I was so wiped out yesterday.

Well, did ya wind up staying home?
No, I was at work when I typed that.
I can't wait to get rid of the masks. What's going to be funny is when we finally get rid of the masks and I go to work and have to re-meet everyone because I won't recognize them.
All the mouth breathers will have to go back to nose breathing.

Huh! Hadn't thought of it for editing.
Then again, I have 4 screens at work. Well... 8, but I rotate the chair for one and slide over for the other 3.
Anyways, I like to work on the one that's directly in front of me and put as much on it as I can. The others play more subordinate roles.
And paler. :rotfl:

That wouldn't be me. I like my ice tea to only vaguely taste like tea.
They also sell ice tea makers, like coffee makers, that prompt you with ice fill lines and # tea bags and then drip hot water.

Right. That's it. I'm calling it. Work week over. Everyone out. Last one standing in California Grill Lounge after XL Long Ice teas gets to take Tinkerbell home. And let me tell ya, she doubles up as the tooth fairy. So every time there's a pull out, you're gonna get a gift.

Have a great weekend chaps.

If you substitute "chicks" for "screens" in this paragraph, we would all be lining up to take your job.

I'm about to legitimately call my work week over. One of my favorite parts of my current job is we get a half day on the last work day before pretty much all of our holidays. Since we get Monday off for MLK day, we get a half day today! My wife was telling her mom that I had 1.5 days off for MLK and she said she was surprised I wasn't going to Disney :rotfl2:

But since no Disney today, I'll work on picking up the basement a bit since we have guests coming over for a game night, then it's LEGO Star Destroyer building time.

Hey, thanks. I knew you'd be there to confirm my status.

Called in sick today. Just needed some rest. I'm not even all that sure why I was so wiped out yesterday.

Hope it worked.

You needed a milestone to tell you that??

I'll admit, there was strong circumstantial evidence.

Good luck to her! Hope the parents will be okay too.

I think I'll be fine. I'm mostly happy for her. My wife is already a mess, though.

Last one standing in California Grill Lounge after XL Long Ice teas

Whew. I was worried it would be Twisted Tea for a second.

Nicely done.

Hope it worked.
Actually... yes.

Figured Julie'd have a hard time with it. Tell her "hug" from me.
