DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Morning, folks.

That's what I'm hoping. They're spending all this time and money to train me, why not keep me on and move me to where I can be of use? They're always looking to fill open slots. The key would be to find a position that has enough hours in the week where I can actually make money. I know people who have worked two part time jobs there until they found a full time job.
Sounds about right. I mean... why invest in you if they don't want to keep you?
You Americans are so stu...er, I mean you're funny. I am red blooded American through and through. :lmao:
Meh. Cubans are communist and they're American too.
That's more like it. And points for blaming the Dole Whip. :thumbsup2
Problem is...

He's Canadian. :lmao:
Yup. And American, too.
Lot of whimpering, it was quite sad.
Me, any day I have to go in to work.
normal is eating a Kitchen sink by yoursef.
Correct.
lets be honest, used to take about 2 hrs to do a 25 minute drive seems a little bit OTT.
Yup. And going back was worse. I've never come close to missing a flight when I'm there.... 3 hours early.
Pkondz, nice job on the runs
Thanks! :)

This is just what a communist would say, buddy.
Or should I say...

Comrade.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: Exactly!

The EMH is a shame, but but it's really weird in Disney, there are many folks who try and "out fan" each other, with exclusivity, and the I"I have more Disney experiences than you" which I can never understand, it's just bragging

Man, that's so true. It's almost like a cult. Which I guess we are a part of, considering where we're having this conversation. But it's easy to forget Disney is a business above all.

If you like it and it suits your budget, go. If it doesn't, don't go. If you want to go and can't afford it, as harsh as it sounds, that's really not Disney's problem to fix. Wow. I'm a capitalist. Didn't see that comin'.

:rotfl:

I think that's about where I am. There are plenty of destinations I want to see. The only way to vote is with your wallet. We go to Disney maybe once every few years when we decide it's something we want to do. Then we save up and look for the best deal. I don't feel the need to go every year. It suits us just fine.

But they haven't found the price at which people will stop going, so there's no incentive to lower it. I'm not sure that price exists, to be honest.

Nice to hear from your Jeff baby, I need your pick for the next 2 playoff rounds so I can go the other way and pay my mortgage off.

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Yup. And American, too.
Huh? Really? If so, do tell.

But it's easy to forget Disney is a business above all.
No...when I look at the bill, it's hard to forget how much they love my business. ;)

But they haven't found the price at which people will stop going, so there's no incentive to lower it. I'm not sure that price exists, to be honest.
I don't think there is one...no matter how expensive, there will be somone who wants and can afford it. Some of the things rich people spend their money on astounds me. I was blown away by the price of the VIP tours at Disney, but yet people pay it.
I imagine the same could be said about me by those who have less than I do, but at least when I splurged on MNSSHP, I was able to get $100 of candy....or at least that's what I'm telling myself. :lmao:

Happy Wednesday. One job interview in the books. It went ok, doesn't seem difficult, but it's not much $ for 40 hours a week. Still have another interview tomorrow. On the hospital job front, they are using an external company to do background checks, and that company sent me an email yesterday. I guess that's good news in that process.

Not much else here. I go for my morning walk, do some chores, and watch some TV. Definitely looking forward to it warming back up so I can be outdoors longer. This transition process is still difficult for me. For over 30 years, I'm used to going to work to make money to buy stuff and Disney vacations. Now, I have enough retirement income to pay my bills, and I have nothing to do. I'm hoping that we can get rid of the masks and the fear and return to normal.

coffee and terrific flavor is an oxymoron. ;)

We will definitely disagree on that.

Speaking of crash - are you guys seeing these horrendous Harmonious barges just trashing the views of World Showcase?

Did you ride the skyliners? One of the drawbacks was seeing the loading bay views.

Thanks, guys. Actually it's been pretty warm here the last couple weeks. I think when I ran that it was around -8C/17F, so no issues there.

That's a heat wave. 2020 couldn't stop the global warming. :rolleyes1

Hey, Gents! Well, day two is down in the history books. Spent all day on the computer watching training videos and working in the training program. It's interesting, a lot of what I'm being trained to do doesn't apply to my job. All I do is look for certain bits of information in faxes that come into one program, transfer that information into the system and then upload it into the electronic records program, that's it. And the information I'm looking for isn't that much either. What I'm being trained on is registration, scheduling and how to take payments in the system. I'm hoping that with all this training they'll keep me and transfer me to a different department where I can utilize this training. Even if they don't, I've been trained on the program and that makes me more marketable....at least in my eyes. :teeth: Well, that's all I've got. Have a good evening.

TTFN

Glad to hear it is going well. And, being trained in multiple areas is beneficial.

I love tea, especially ice tea. However, in the winter, when it's nice a cold outside, hot tea comes out. Mmmmmm

Sweet (iced) tea in KY means you can stand thr spoon up in the glass without it touching the sides with all the sugar. :lmao:

Oh wait, we are also #2 in the nation for % population with diabetes. :sad2:

How long of a drive is it for you? I think it'd a 24 hour drive for me if I did it.

About 13 hours, depending on stops. The Atlanta traffic was always the worse. When younger, I'd drive thru the night, going thru Atlanta around 2 AM. No traffic then, but I was exhausted the next day.

The cost is what's getting to me. My DW and I agree that we'll take a trip down, but once the final cost is in I doubt we'll be doing another any time soon.

Oh, I look back at it over the years and we could have purchased a 2nd home already with the $ we spent on Disney vacations. Granted, KY home prices are far cheaper than the most. Was it worth it? Depends on who you are.

I agree mate, love the smell of it, the taste is like engine oil.

And just how many times have you drank engine oil? Not a gin fan either. My dad liked gin tonic. Gibley gin was his choice. He also drank Old Forester bourbon, so I'm guessing it was more about cost than flavor.

Man, that's so true. It's almost like a cult.

But they haven't found the price at which people will stop going, so there's no incentive to lower it. I'm not sure that price exists, to be honest.

DDC = DisDad Cult? Could be.

Even the most successful businesses have to adapt or close their doors. We all remember the Sears catalog? Disney is now raking it in with their streaming service. One of the reasons I haven't sold my contract is that I can get a better hotel for a week trip to the ocean, even if I decide never to go to the parks again.

I don't think there is one...no matter how expensive, there will be somone who wants and can afford it. Some of the things rich people spend their money on astounds me. I was blown away by the price of the VIP tours at Disney, but yet people pay it.

Free candy with the $100 event ticket. YUP!!!

did my big First Day at Work report last night,
I take it from that you have a new job, I guess I missed that (it happens when you don’t read thirty or so pages). Congrats. Is it something in the field you wanted?

On a side note, it looks like the loss of the DME at the end of the year is upsetting a lot of people. Thoughts from the guys?
I’m not that upset about it. Mildly disappointed. But my last trip I decided to rent a car anyway (even though I stayed on property). Despite the cost, I enjoyed the freedom more and I think I’ll be renting a car regardless, so DME kind of became irrelevant for me.

Unfortunately the kitten only made it about 6 months and for the last couple of days the old cat wouldn't leave the kittens side. I'm sure your cats will figure it out.
Very sad, sorry to hear that.

The last couple days have been a little better for my old cat and she’s slowing calming down.
The kitten is exploring every corner of the house, top to bottom, and is oblivious to the upset he’s caused.

Did you try giving the cat more Scotch?
No but that gives me an idea.

hat and the loss of extra magic hours seem to take away just about all of the perks for staying onsite.
Before this latest round of cuts, I had seriously been thinking of staying off site next time anyway. I like being in the bubble, but not sure I find much benefit anymore.

Nice to hear from your Jeff baby, I need your pick for the next 2 playoff rounds so I can go the other way and pay my mortgage off.
Always good to hear from you too Dan.
I don’t know if my bad mojo is wearing off, but I didn’t choose nearly as poorly last weekend.
Next round I really don’t expect anything but the top two seeds on either side to win, which is probably the overall consensus.
If you want to make some money on the big game, I’ve decided to be a Bills fan this year. Which probably means they won’t see it past round 2.

Morning, Gents! Day three is in the history books! Finally finished the training for the programs I'll be using and passed those assessments, so happy about that. Today begins the actual job training, which I'm really looking forward to. I'm looking forward to getting in there and showing them what I can do. I went out and bought a couple of extra computer screens in anticipation of working from home. I'll be setting that up this weekend in hopes that I can work from home starting next week. As much as I love going into the office, I think they really want me to work from home. That's ok, I'll do it. Well, that's all I've got. Have a good day, and we'll chat on the other end.

TTFN

Problem is...

He's Canadian. :lmao:

Americans/Canadians...they all look the same to me.

Give a cat catnip and many of them act like they're drunk (or high)

:thumbsup2

Hmmmm...maybe need to consider alternate revenue stream....hmmm.

That could be quite lucrative!

Lot of whimpering, it was quite sad.

Oh...well that's sad.

On the Disney announcements, I'm in Darcys camp. Disney is a product. They will amend that product as they see fit, and if anyone doesn't like it there are other places in the world. The whole chest beating thing some are doing on FB and other parts of here over a coach service, that, lets be honest, used to take about 2 hrs to do a 25 minute drive seems a little bit OTT. Walt wouldn't be turning in his grave, or his freezer for that matter. Is it a more expensive proposition than a few years ago? Absolutely. If it was cheaper, would we all be screaming at Disney for over capacity? You betcha sweet heiny we would. The EMH is a shame, but but it's really weird in Disney, there are many folks who try and "out fan" each other, with exclusivity, and the I"I have more Disney experiences than you" which I can never understand, it's just bragging. If you like it and it suits your budget, go. If it doesn't, don't go. If you want to go and can't afford it, as harsh as it sounds, that's really not Disney's problem to fix. Wow. I'm a capitalist. Didn't see that comin'.

Thank you! This was well said. Do we all get upset when Disney cancels/gets rid of something we like? Absolutely, but at the end of the day they are a business that needs to make money.

CCT, hope the job is going well mate

Sounds about right. I mean... why invest in you if they don't want to keep you?

Exactly! That's how I view all this training. Cross training, baby!

Meh. Cubans are communist and they're American too.

touché!

Man, that's so true. It's almost like a cult. Which I guess we are a part of, considering where we're having this conversation. But it's easy to forget Disney is a business above all.

I guess it is like being in a cult, but there are those fans who take it the next level...I use to be one of them, and to some extent I still am, but even I've calmed things down. So...hi fellow cult member. I can see Disney now, "Oh no! We're losing some people! Quick! Release a limited edition of something....ANYTHING!" :rotfl:

I love Disney and would love to go back. Heck, I'd go a couple a times a year if I could afford it, but there are so many places I want to visit, and some are in my backyard. I've always wanted to go leaf peeping in the fall to some quant New England village but haven't....one year.

Hoping something good comes your way, my friend.

We will definitely disagree on that.

:lmao:

Glad to hear it is going well. And, being trained in multiple areas is beneficial.

I'm all about being crossed trained, as long as it doesn't take away from my regular job too much, I'm all for it.

Sweet (iced) tea in KY means you can stand thr spoon up in the glass without it touching the sides with all the sugar. :lmao:

Oh wait, we are also #2 in the nation for % population with diabetes. :sad2:

My brother loves his sugar with his tea, or as I put it, "So, Charles, you want some tea with your sugar?"

About 13 hours, depending on stops. The Atlanta traffic was always the worse. When younger, I'd drive thru the night, going thru Atlanta around 2 AM. No traffic then, but I was exhausted the next day.

That's not a bad drive, really. I'd drive from Cape Cod, about 24 hours, but that'd mean my vacation would have to be longer because of the drive.

DDC = DisDad Cult? Could be.

:thumbsup2 Question: Who would be the DisDad Cult leader? He who keeps and updates the stats? :teeth:

Even the most successful businesses have to adapt or close their doors. We all remember the Sears catalog? Disney is now raking it in with their streaming service. One of the reasons I haven't sold my contract is that I can get a better hotel for a week trip to the ocean, even if I decide never to go to the parks again.

Yep.

I take it from that you have a new job, I guess I missed that (it happens when you don’t read thirty or so pages). Congrats. Is it something in the field you wanted?

I do, and it is in the field I want to be in: Medical. I'm also working for the company I've been trying to get on for years. I'm actually a temp, but I'll take it as many people start off as a temp and then move in, and up, from there.

I’m not that upset about it. Mildly disappointed. But my last trip I decided to rent a car anyway (even though I stayed on property). Despite the cost, I enjoyed the freedom more and I think I’ll be renting a car regardless, so DME kind of became irrelevant for me.

Hello Gentlemen. New DISDad here. I've actually been in the FB group for a while but realized I've never posted in this thread. I am Kyle from Alabama and am addicted to traveling to Disney. Next trip is 2/12. Sad I missed the most recent meetup but hope I can come to a future one!

Welcome to the Boards, my friend. I'm Steven, aka CapeCodTenor, and I'm from, well, Cape Cod, MA.

Morning gents.
I'm the spare person today at work, which means if no one calls in sick, or whatever, I can stay home!!

So... I'm typing this up at work... :sad2:

Huh? Really? If so, do tell.
Not much to tell, I'm American, just like you. I live here.
Not much else here. I go for my morning walk, do some chores, and watch some TV. Definitely looking forward to it warming back up so I can be outdoors longer. Now, I have enough retirement income to pay my bills, and I have nothing to do.
I'm wondering if in a few years I'll be in the same boat. Worked for a long time doing what you describe... I'll find out in about 5 more years.
I'm hoping that we can get rid of the masks and the fear and return to normal.
Amen, brother.
That's a heat wave. 2020 couldn't stop the global warming. :rolleyes1
Any kidding aside, winters do seem (overall, on average) to be warmer up here than when I was a kid. I remember it being much colder, much longer with much more snow on average.
Then again... maybe that's just a case of "I had to walk 10 miles to school through six feet of snow... uphill both ways!" syndrome.
Sweet (iced) tea in KY means you can stand thr spoon up in the glass without it touching the sides with all the sugar. :lmao:
Now you're talking.
Except when I had sweet tea in KY (or NC), the only thing I found lacking was... not enough sugar.
Ice tea up here is... Take water. Add sugar. Wave a tea bag at it.
But my last trip I decided to rent a car anyway (even though I stayed on property). Despite the cost, I enjoyed the freedom more and I think I’ll be renting a car regardless, so DME kind of became irrelevant for me.
I wonder if the announcement had the rental car companies going :cheer2:

Good!
I went out and bought a couple of extra computer screens in anticipation of working from home.
Your expense? Or will you get reimbursed?
Americans/Canadians...they all look the same to me.
One set is colder.

Not much to tell, I'm American, just like you. I live here
When I re-read the initial post, I was kicking myself and saying DUH! North America.
But typically the distiction is made for American to reference US of A American, but you're correct.

Now you're talking.

I recall you telling me you liked a little tea with you sugar. I always thought that was more a Southern thing, but ovbiously you're a much more Northern North American.

I wonder if the announcement had the rental car companies going :cheer2:
Just had another thought...with Disney now charging to park a vehicle at the resorts, this also equates to more money for them.

Moring Gents,

Dreary day here but the temperatures are climbing in anticipation of a freezing rain/ice storm headed this way for Saturday. Good times!

NHL started up again last night. I'm sure Mike will agree with me that in at least two of the games the wrong team won.

Mini outbreak going on here but nothing like what most of you have had to deal with. If people would just do what they are being asked, this wouldn't have happened.

Have a good one all!

We've rented a car, used a car service and used DME. DME was fine but it wasn't as convenient as some people make it out to be. They seem to forget that you often had to wait at the airport, leave very early to return and your luggage wasn't always delivered to your room in a prompt manner. I think the best thing about it was the ability to use on-site airline checkin and not having to worry about taking your luggage with you to the airport.

Staying on-site will always be my first choice as it is more convenient and I love staying immersed in the Disney theming. I stay in enough hotels that something themed is always nice to have.

LOL...I've used that one before.

I hope the resort airline luggage check-in returns. You didn't even have to be riding Magical Express to use it so even if we had rented a car we still always checked our bags at the resort.

Adjusting to the retired life can be a challenging, I find the early mornings the hardest, I've gotten up at 5:30 am for over 40 years to go to work. I still wake up early and stay fairly quiet so as not to wake up my wife as she likes to sleep till 9 or so.

Really? Wow! Never knew..oh hold on...I see what he did there

Well played my man

Nice one there Rob, looks great. Was it a long job turning it through 90 degrees? That takes some skills, playa.

Welcome to the no drama corner of Disdaddery.

And, it's Thursday. Interview went well this AM. It is 40+ hours a week, is in the private sector, decent starting money, with promising promotion/ commission money. It's a 4 layer interview process management trainee position. Hopefully, I'll make it to the next level. On one hand, working at the hospital 2/3 days a week gives me the time off, but I have to work with sick people all day. Every day. And, I would always get the 10% of difficult patients, as that would be my role. On the other hand, it would be upselling customers, which has it's own headaches. So, I'm back to those crossroads of working 3 to 5 years for more money to not work again or working PRN for an undetermined amount of time. Honestly, I really can't decide. Still, I currently do not have any offers, so I'll just have to wait and see.

Welcome Kyle. Another SEC dad has joined, which is a good thing. You still celebrating the win?

Then again... maybe that's just a case of "I had to walk 10 miles to school through six feet of snow... uphill both ways!" syndrome.

I read something that the ozone layer hole had closed and CO2 emissions have decreased dramatically with COVID restrictions. Don't know if that is good, bad, or even true.

Now you're talking.
Except when I had sweet tea in KY (or NC), the only thing I found lacking was... not enough sugar.

You may be shot for an offense like that here. :lmao:

Boil water, put in lots of tea bags, let steep for 5 to 7 minutes, pour sugar into hot water to dissolve, then pour over ice to cool down.

Just had another thought...with Disney now charging to park a vehicle at the resorts, this also equates to more money for them.

It's not like they didn't charge before for parking. They just rolled the price into their ticket costs. If they had done the same this time, no one would have complained - well, maybe not as much complaining.

You changed gravity in your bathroom renovation? That's awesome! It's like Figment's house now. :lmao:

I occasionally wake up before her, but I'm the night owl. So, I'd rather stay up later, but she needs to be in bed early to work the next day.

Bingo :)

Yup.
Most Canadians exhibit a look of shock on their faces the first time they order ice tea in the US. More so in the northern states.
Just had another thought...with Disney now charging to park a vehicle at the resorts, this also equates to more money for them.
Good point.

I strongly suspect that when I go next (after DME is discontinued and Brightline is in service) that I'll take the train to DTD then Lyft.
But! If the plan is to see more of FL... then car rental from the airport might be the way to go. Might not. Would have to crunch the numbers.
Dreary day here but the temperatures are climbing in anticipation of a freezing rain/ice storm headed this way for Saturday. Good times!
We had some of that last night. Luckily, not too much. Some highways got closed down, but overall... not too bad.
Mini outbreak going on here
Saw that. Keep safe and healthy.
LOL...I've used that one before.

Phew! For a second there I saw the photo and was like "er... um... nice... job?"
New bathroom
Much better. Changed the heat, too.
My 5 second thought process on that one...

Really? Wow! Never knew..oh hold on...I see what he did there

Well played my man
:thumbsup2
Nice one there Rob, looks great. Was it a long job turning it through 90 degrees? That takes some skills, playa.

I really don't envy you your choices.
I dunno... I just couldn't see myself working 40+ hours/week after I retire. YMMV of course.
I read something that the ozone layer hole had closed and CO2 emissions have decreased dramatically with COVID restrictions. Don't know if that is good, bad, or even true.
Don't know either. I haven't hear anything about the ozone hole in quite a while. Wouldn't be surprised about the CO2, though.
You may be shot for an offense like that here. :lmao:
Boil water, put in lots of tea bags, let steep for 5 to 7 minutes, pour sugar into hot water to dissolve, then pour over ice to cool down.
Might have to try that. ::yes::
