Our two year old still sleeps in her crib, we have a twin bed in her room and her crib can turn into a toddler/day-bed. My question is at what age should we start the trasition into the big-girl bed and how? I realize it is about time now and just want some feedback. To tie it in on this board, we really want her to be ready to sleep in the Big bed in the hotel room next year.

We actually didn't transition until DS's wanted OUT of the crib by themselves. I was afraid of them falling and cracking their heads. One son was ready by about 22 months and has never looked back, he climbed out of his crib all the time anyways. Other DS slept in his crib longer, but the transition was about 2 1/2 or so. We just made a big deal about the fun side rails (we got an Elmo one) and he was very excited and also never looked back!

We started the transition around 2 to 2-1/2 with nap time. Not that a lot of napping got done in the big bed, but DS was at the age where he wasnt' napping much anyway. Then we went through a period of letting him choose where to sleep--start the night in the big bed(with rails, of course), eventually end up in the crib. And finally he just preferred the big bed. This whole process took less than 3 months.

Both my DD11 & DS7 were out of their cribs when they turned one & went straight into twin beds. I hated those cribs because of how difficult it is to change the sheets on the mattressess.

Both did fine in the twin bed at one year old. Just make sure you have a bed rail.

My DS started taking naps at my parents' house in a bed when he was about 2.5. I'd had a bed set up in his room always along with the crib and when he was I think 3 months shy of 3 one day I just took down the crib and he slept in the bed from that night on. He did great. I think he was just ready for it. He only fell out one time, but I left the crib mattress next to the bed in case he fell. He never tried to climb out of the crib and it was the same way with the bed. I don't think he got out of bed on his own until a couple of months ago when he was almost 3.5.

My DS will be 3 in July and he still sleeps in his crib. He has never tried to get out, so he's still in there. His crib does convert to a toddler bed, but since we've never had an issue with the crib, we just left it as a crib. For his birthday we plan on redoing his room and getting him a twin bed!

When DD was 2 1/2, she went from a crib to regular twin bed. We put rails on it to keep her from falling out. She just turned 3 and is still using the rails. We plan to bring the rails with us when we go to DW in March.

It took awhile for her to get used to staying in her bed, but if your child has already been in a toddler bed, that shouldn't be a big problem for you.

We got our rails at Toys R Us.

DS#1 moved himself out of the crib at 14-15 months. He is very tall and it was just too small for his tastes, so that meant no toddler bed either. Never a problem. DS#2 is only 19 months older than DS#3, so we moved him out of the crib (didn't want him feeling displaced) at a year. Never seemed to care.

I moved my dd2 from her crib to a twin bed at 17 months. The daycare started transitioning her to the 18-24 month class at 16 months and started having her nap on a cot instead of a crib. I was easier on her for us to be consistent. She was throwing a fit at night not wanting the crib. Once we went to the bed, we had no more bedtime struggles.

My daughter turned 2 last month and one day we just decided to move her into her big girl bed. The first night she freaked out and I got a little concerned. We didn't think she would have a problem- she's very laid back about everything. The second night was a little better and by the third night she could have cared less. Of course, when I put her down and got her up from her naps and at night I gushed about how neat her big girl bed was. She never attempted to get out of her crib and she doesn't attempt to get of her bed. I was a little surprised at this. I assumed she would figure it out really fast and would be out of bed every night but I think the bed rail makes her think she's still confined like she was in her crib. :confused3

We moved DS out at ~30 months. He loved his crib and still wanted to sleep in it. We had him help us disassemble it and move it out of his room and put a toddler bed in. When he saw that it was the only place to sleep, he was fine with it.

My daughter was about 2-1/2 when she moved into a big girl bed. We had a big girl bed for her, but she didn't want to move into it, until she got bit by a mosquito one night. :sad2: Poor thing, she wouldn't go NEAR her crib after that. To this day (almost a year later) she remembers the mosquito.

Considering she was reluctant, it really didn't take her too long to get used to the big bed.

At around age 2, we moved a big girl bed into DD's room. We told her whenever she was ready to move into the big bed would be fine. She started with a night here and there and it was just a natural progression. Eventually we passed on our crib to a relative and she was fine with it. It had been in her room and not slept in for months at that point.

We moved both our girls into a toddler bed around 15 mos. That's when they started trying to climb out of the crib, and I was afraid they'd fall and get hurt. The toddler bed was so close to the floor I wasn't really concerned about them falling out. It had half rail attached, so we never used other side rails. They moved to a twin bed by age 3.

Our DDs were about 1 because Daycare starts the kids in cots at their first b-day. Started with naps and moved to twin with bed rails- no problems here!

My oldest was 18 months when we got her a big girl bed and that was only because baby #2 was on the way and I didnt' want to kick her out of her bed when the new baby arrived and wanted to give her time to get used to the idea..

My youngest was almost 3 when we finally got her a toddler bed, she didn't mind being in the crib and never tried to get out either, but someone gave us a free toddler bed so we switched her then....she was so little that she actually slept in the tiny toddler bed til she was 7 or 8!!!

DD moved to Big Girl Bed at 2 1/2, mostly because she'd figured out how to get out of the crib, and would go over the side!
Her crib converted to toddler bed, so that part was easy.
She enjoyed her newfound freedom a bit much, though, and wouldn't stay in bed! It took the better part of two weeks (and stickers for staying in bed all night) before she'd stay in bed all night.

Just wanted to update that my DD has been sleeping in her big girl Bed for over a month now, she had no problem transitioning. Thanks for all the replys. :)
