DD just broke 2 bones in her foot and we are leaving next week!!

I don't know if this has been posted yet...

But some hospitals do have waterproof casts. They are completely waterproof and you can go swimming in them. Insurance doesn't cover the extra cost so you may have to pay around $45-$55 for it.

I only know this because my DD3 fractured her arm last Sat. and is sporting a lovely hot pink waterproof cast:rolleyes: She has been swimming and bathed with no problems. They did tell me that pool water needs to be rinsed out after swimming. You can take a hose and run water in the top and out the bottom of the cast. Being that you would be on vacation and probably not have a hose, you could fill a water bottle with fresh water and squirt it in.

Good luck!

OKW has quite an arrange of Wheelchairs. Some have locks and some don't. They have regular adult and those for large adults, I don't believe they have any pediatric ones. I'd get one with a lock, they'll let you pick one out. As noted, they are free with a deposit, about $300 or so last I hear including the lock. If they don't have one, you or they should be able to get one from another resort. You can take them to the parks, etc., which is why you need the lock. If you'll have a car you may want to get a temp HC authorization which should require a small fee and a specific document signed by your physician, a simple letter will not do, they will require their own form in most states. Good luck and sorry for the situation. A few years ago my daughter did the same thing right before a beach vacation. I think it affect me more than her because I catered to her all week taking her fracture boot when she got to the pool and bringing her virgin Pina Coladas. And I can tell you that beach wheelchair was quite a workout for the rest of us.

Oh my when I say I know how you feel......I really do, our 12 yo dd did the same thing last year about a week prior to our trip......we thought that our trip was going to have such a damper.......to be honest, she was treated like royalty. the CM and charters alike gave her so much extra attention, the wheelchair helped her so much at the parks..... she still enjoyed everything. I know its not good timing however the cast members will do thier part and deliver extra magic to you!!! Tell her she gets front row at all parades.....that was a plus, a CM came and got us and took us there. oh I do hope her pain goes away, we did not have that ... thank heaven, however hopefully you want either by trip time. If she gets a swim cast, the charters love to sign that!!!!:goodvibes

Thanks for more advice!!!

Janis..........I am sure she will love having the attention at the pool!!! LOL!!

Our orthopedic does have waterproof casts!!! i am placing the call tomorrow. I just feel a little funny asking for a cast!!! I don't want to undermine his decision but will ask if there are any other alternatives that he could think of to help her be more comfortable on the trip!!

DD has told me that she does not want to be in a wheelchair. She says she does not want people to 'feel bad for her'!!! I figure I will give it one day and she will be begging for the wheelchair (at least her armpits will be!!).

Don't you just love 10 yo logic? I wonder how she came to the conclusion that people will feel less sorry for someone hobbling around on crutches than for someone in a wheelchair? :rotfl:

I agree!!! She is so concerned with what Eddie (at OKW) is going to say and do to her because of her foot!!! She just loves horsing around with him!!!

And if she does get a cast.............it will not be lime green!!! I tried to convince her but she wants a red one and will bring a black sharpie!!!

Hi,

So sorry to hear about your DD injury. My daughter is 11 now but during her 10th year she had numerous fractures and Disney was great. She had a fracture on the growth plate of her foot. We rented wheel chairs at the park and asked for the smaller ones (not as wide as the large ones) and it worked out great. She would still transfer to get on the rides.

I love the water proof casts. Her last fracture she fell off the monkey bars at school and fractured her forearm and the Dr just wrapped it in a sling. After a few days it was so painful the Orthopedic put a cast on it. What a difference it really does give it a chance to heal and some protection too.

She would be able to get wet but the cast would still be heavy in the water. We paid the add'l $25 for the water proof cast. Insurance only covered the regular price.

You'll still have a great trip! :wizard:

Our daughter got used to being pushed in the wheel chair and all the attention from her family and cousins.

I have not read through all the post so forgive me if this is a repeat!

Call the airline if you are flying and ask them to put her in a bulk head set. Bulk head is the very first row in coach. Bulk head has more leg room! And being in the seated position for any length of time might cause her leg to swell. So I would put her by the window and have her sit with her back to the window and her leg stretched out across your lap may help.
Or if the plane is not that full maybe she can move to a row that has no one in it and push the arm rest out of the way so she can stretch out across the seats. Or ask at the gate counter if there is a row with no one in it and ask to have her assigned to the row.

Thanks for the info Shelley but in this case, being an airline employee and flying on passes, I have very little say in what seat we can get.............we fly stand-by based on seniority!! Works out great when you don't need any special attention!! Flying out of BOS I may have some 'pull' but not much on the return out of MCO!!! They do save the bulkhead seats for last minute passengers so maybe, just maybe, she will get one!!!

We are off to the ortho this morning..............fingers crossed we get a cast or something that will make it easier for her. I just can't believe how swollen it still is 10 days later!!!

Thanks again everyone!!! I will update you later............after the ortho, we are off to buy little presents (candy related from Boston!) for Ted, MaryAnn and Eddie!!!!

definitely get the wheelchair at OKW - but with 2 of them - might get him a scooter.

all the OKW buses allow wheelchair - but 2 is the maximum - so if both of your kids need these things - just get use to waiting.

these things are heavy - so you don't want to drive with them in these things.

at OKW just ask at the front desk or bell services. you can also get a scooter here - but it will definitely cost you. would go for outside services for a scooter.

boy the most I ever had was my mother needing a wheelchair (oh yea she didn't want one either.

might even cancel with 2 of them. so sorry you are going thru this.

oh okw won't - but some of the other resorts will say you can't leave their property (meaning the resort) - but if you tell them the property means the entire WDW - that look at you very strange.

disney does not want their wheelchair off site - at Sw, US/IOA or the outlet malls - but any WDW property is fine - that includes all the parks and DTD.

I'll start looking for the girl with the red cast on her foot when we get there next Thursday. Probably won't be there in time to visit the pool until Friday, though. We will be kinda busy since we are one night in the HH booking, then move for the rest of the week. Can't wait to see you there and say hello.

Come say hello!!! We'll be easy to find!!!! We leave bright and early Saturday (staying off site) and checking into OKW on Sunday until the following Sunday!!!

OK - we'll be looking for you!! I'm leaving Friday - driving to Washington - have a tour of the White House Saturday, going to my Sister's in Virginia - gathering her gang and we will arrive at OKW on Monday.

There is another family from the Disboards at OKW starting Sunday also, Alice in Wonderland. Anyone else??

Janis

Janis............have a safe drive!!!! See you next week!!! Funny that we will most likely meet up at OKW instead of our own hometown!! LOL!!

Safe flying, driving everyone..................OKW here we come!!!!

Something that helps speed healing is vitamin C. I would have her take at least 1000mg a day while she is healing this will help the bones mend quicker.

You will have to look for our arrival since you beat us there by a few days. (Only 1 more week to go :yay: ) Of course, I think by our conversations in my OKW thread on the DVC board, I'm probably still supposed to keep my DSs away from your DDs until you guys head back home. :rotfl: Of course, that won't help with all those other teen boys that will be there at the same time. :scared1:

J/K; as hot as it is supposed to be, I'm sure we will be spending a whole lot of time during the hot part of the day cooling off at the pool.:thumbsup2 We will probably see you there. I will be on the lookout for that red cast, and you can look for my LGMH. It will probably be on DWs pool bag and/or the camera if I have it with me. That and three very overactive DSs to draw attention to us. Make sure you say hello!
