DD got her braces on yesterday and of course her mouth is killing her. Every 5 seconds she is moaning in pain. Besides the motrin is there anything else that anyone has found to help with the pain?

You might check the thread about teens drinking at Epcot... :lmao:

Give the orthodontist a call, he might be able to give her something for it, or just tell you motrin/tylenol :/

I thought about the ole wisky and honey trick, but remembered that was for a cough, although :scratchin :lmao:

She is taking mortin, and I just gave her some tylenol. I told her maybe an ice pack or a warm cloth.

I agree call the Ortho. I hope she feels better :flower3:

Motrin seems to be best! Also, go get her a slushy! My son got braces last May ('05) and is hoping to have them off in November.

Let her know she will get use to them very soon and before she knows it they will be gone :goodvibes

Just think about the beautiful smile that she will have :teeth:

P. S. I gave DS Motrin on the morning of his ortho appts where they tighten them!

Here's a rose for DD :rose: Hope she feels better! :goodvibes

did'nt they give her a "chew plate"? most orthodontists give the kids a thin rubber like thing (kind of u shaped) that they are supposed to put in their mouths and chew on periodicly after installation or adjustments (you tend to not want to chew so your teeth hurt more, if you chew on these throughout the day theres almost no subsequent pain). it's too late now-but check with the ortho. to see if he has these-if not see if you can order one on line (also-get a BIG supply of the wax they have at the ortho's office in the event of a sharp wire-you can't buy the stuff retail and if a wire pops on a weekend it is a life saver).

depending on how extensive the braces he may need to call in a perscription for some pain meds just so she can manage to start chewing and aliviate the pain.

hugs to dd-i went through this (pre chew plate days) and it was agony-made me much more sensitive to my kids when they started teething.

oooh-a special p.s.-if they have her take those nasty pills to dry out her mouth for adustments and the like-there is a way to stop their effects almost immediatly. after the adjustment drink either v-8 or tomato juice. even a small can will immediatly counteract the pill and get your salivary glands working (i had to wear braces twice, and as an adult wear them with my jaws wired shut for 6 weeks post tmj surgery-i know all the tricks ;) ).

Thank you! I keep telling her it is a long road ahead, but she will be thankful when she's done.

I did give her motrin before she had them put on, that seemed to help a lot.

Barkley: They didn't give her a chew plate. Is it something she can still get or did they need to do it before the braces were on? They did give her wax.

She put a heating pad on her jaw and that seemed to help some. She said her bottom teeth seem to bother her the most.

YIcks I still remember that pain from over 30 years ago. It was painful getting them off for the same reason. I remember living on milk shakes and slushies for a couple of days and tons of aspirin. I would think ice would be better than heat as heat would encourage swelling. Geez I remember having a huge headache because the roots of my teeth hurt so bad. Good luck to your dd.

Alternate the motrin and tylenol. The pain will last a couple days, then get ease up (until her next adjustment!). The rubber bite plate that Barkley suggested can be used after adjustments later. Personally, I didnt care for it and didnt really use mine.

I just got my braces off in April, after 2 1/2 long years.

If she is old enough to take aspirin, have her chew some (recommended dose for her body weight) with a small amount of water. Swish well & keep it in her mouth for a bit. Aspirin is absorbed through the soft tissues & will give some immediate relief. If she can't handle the taste of plain aspirin, the flavored childrens' aspirin will work too.

It will get better after a couple of days - then she'll deal with this each time they are adjusted or tightened. It's a pain, but so worth it in the end!

Hope she feels better soon!

I would NEVER give aspirin to anyone undere age 18, risk of Reye's Syndrome.

Stick w/motrin (same anti inflammatory properties as aspirin).

There are several new over the counter meds for mouth/tooth/brace pain. Such as Rucinal(spelling), orajel, etc. Check w/pharmacist/orthodontist for recommendations.

Good luck!

Popsicles. They get some fluid into her, and numb her up a bit
Heating pad type thing, or ice on the face. Either will kill some of the pain
And reassure her that the pain is almost never as bad for the adjustments as it is the first couple days. I had pretty much every type of braces "thing" in my mouth over the course of 2 1/2 years, and nothing was as bad as the first few days.

Thanks again for the advice everyone, dd has been sucking on popsicles most of the afternoon which seems to help. I also did the motrin tylenol thing.

as for wax I am pretty sure I saw some in toothpaste asile at walmart, You may want to check it out just as a FYI If you should ever need it. I agree with others the getting braces put on pain was WORSE than any pain I ever had with adjustments.

for what it's worth... I'm 32 and just got mine on Tuesday... Hope your DD is doing good... I got overconfident on day 1.... then day 2 came and I tried to eat something as simple as cheese.... and  ouch... so day 2 I did home made Orange Julius....

There's a great site for adults with braces at archwired.com..... and there's a place in the forums (much like these DIS forums) where you can ask questions you/she may have..... there's a place to ask the ortho... and a place for parents of kids w/grills (as I've heard them called lately).

3 things to remember:

1. rinse with salt water alot to soothe/strengthen up her lips
2. to improve self image repeat in best Will Smith MIB style:
I make these look GOOD!
I make these look GOOD!
I make these look GOOD!
3. I've heard eating right after your adjustment is a good idea

Later,
Paul

Thanks for the link Paul  I will definitely check it out. It is also good to know about the salt water for her lips they are bothering her. I told her to try that before she goes to bed tonight.

DD is doing much better. They didn't cut the wires far enough on her back teeth and they were really cutting into her mouth. We went back in and they cut it better and that helped quite a bit. She went from using a whole thing of wax a day to now she is only using it once in a while. She says they don't bother her as much anymore. She actually was able to eat a hamburger today for the first time. :thumbsup2

It is amazing that she has only had them on just over a week and already there is a huge difference so that has boosted her tolerance. I catch her smiling at herself in the mirror. :)

I'm five months into my three-year stint (I'm 30). The first two weeks are the hardest. I have a 100% overbite and I have huge blue bite build-ups on my back left upper molars to help me chew since my top teeth completely fit over my bottom teeth. My ortho told me to use Motrin because it also has an anti-inflammatory. Also, I visit archwired.com a lot -- it's site for adults with braces, but has a teen section, too.

I'm managing editor of a national pizza magazine, and I seriously wondered how I was going to be able to do my job -- eat pizza!! A lot of it. But I manage, although I'm still self-conscious about talking after I eat.

Here are some good options for meals from my first two weeks:

1. Spaghetti with marinara -- use kitchen shears to cut cooked spaghetti into tiny pieces, then mix in the sauce. You can swallow it whole because it's soft and slides right down without chewing. I have a three-year-old, and I made this for her, then figured out I could eat it.
2. Ground hamburger –– I cook the hamburger, drain it, then use my fingers to literally crush it into tiny pieces before adding any mixes, like Manwich Bold (my favorite -- I can eat it without the bun). It's kind of like the insides of enchiladas at independent Mexican restaurants (which I can also eat, if I cut it into tiny slivers). This also works for Hamburger Helper if you buy the kind with rice.
3. Canned ravioli -- Before you microwave it, cut the ravioli into pieces. It also slides right down. CAUTION: This stuff will stain clear ligs like nobody's business. I had to get wire tires because mine were so stained.
4. Buffet food -- we met my father-in-law at a chain buffet (what is it about old people and buffet food?). I managed a plate full of cooked carrots and green beans (I mashed them finely with my fork and knife before I ate it), stuffing and mashed potatoes.
5. Soft tofu -- tastes kind of like kindergarten paste to me, but I added it to canned cream soups before heating, so I got some extra protein.
6. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches -- cut the crusts off and make sure you use extra soft bread. You can pull off small bites and swallow.
7. Butternut squash -- I cut it in half lengthwise and scoop out the innards. Then cover with plastic wrap and cook on high for 8 minutes. Let cook, cut into chunks and peel off the skin. I then mash it and eat as a side dish to my steady diet of soups.
8. Bean burritos -- just make sure the tortillas are soft enough.
9. If you have a Papa Murphy's Take N Bake, the DeLite line is easier to eat than regular pizza -- it's thin crust and since you bake it at home, you can control the crunch of the crust...

I had a meltdown last week after I had a canker sore above my right left tooth. But it was gone after a few days of rinsing with saltwater.

I have to have nitrous oxide AND a Xanax before every adjustment. So your DD can have help if needed!!
