DD and her DH asked me what I want for my birthday - and now they're telling me..

Only bummer C.Ann - Amish dont celebrate b'days with prezzies! So you may be SOL all around!! ;)

ungrateful brats-LOL
( of course the fact that you can buy two new cars for the price of some enclosed buggys-and car insurance is cheaper than horse feed wouldnt have anything to do with it)
My mother had these things-a horse and a buggy-and umm-actually knowing the out come-well-umm-yea-i know how that all works out.

I think you should then ask for a rickshaw and make them be the "driver" for you. :thumbsup2

Ungrateful brats!

OT but...
If you want a horse and buggy for your birthday, I'm assuming you may have been to the Lancaster area a few times???
We go often (only live about an hour and a half away) but don't often stay over night. Have you ever stayed at Kitchen Kettle Village? The reviews look good, and we love shopping there. Just thought I'd ask in case you had! I'm thinking about booking it for October.
I wouldn't mind an Amish buggy either, but I'm OK with settling for lunch at Dieners, a ride at Abe's, and a spooky night at Dutch Wonderland (with my kiddo's!) Amish Country is what I will miss the most when we move from the East Coast!

Please tell me that you are the one who posted about an Amish book, I want to order for my friend's birthday and could not find it!! Do you know a name?
Happy Birthday!!

I have read so many Amish books in the past month and a half or so, I can't even keep track.. Was there a particular one you had in mind? Did you want a stand-alone - or a series?

Wow they are really ungrateful brats. It's not like you asked for another grandchild.

Yeah - really! :snooty: At least they wouldn't have to send my horse to college..:rotfl:

Interesting take on it.

The fact that some (not all) Amish kids can have a rumspringa actually makes me feel better about the Amish way, since it allows teens to experience life among the 'english'. This lets them make a more informed decision about whether they want to continue to be Amish.

It should also be noted that while it is true that their deviations from Amish norms are not as severaly condemned during rumspringa, they are not technically released from Ordnung.

I agree.. I've also been reading non-fiction books about the Amish and their traditions; have ordered several documentaries; and have come to the conclusion that watching one show (or reading one non-fiction book) can easily be biased one way or the other.. In order to really understand the culture it's best to get that information from a wide variety of sources before passing judgment on the Amish as a whole..

Also, a lot depends on if they are Old Order, New Order, or Beachy Amish - as each one has their own set of rules governing their children; their education; what they are allowed to do; how they run their homes and farms; etc.. "Amish" is somewhat of a "blanket" term which many people don't realize.. Then you also have the differences in the Pennsylvania Amish and the Ohio Amish.. As I said earlier, there is a lot more to this that comes to light when one is so inclined to do some serious research..:goodvibes

Sad to say, I've never been.. :( However, I do hope to get there sometime in the future.. My interest started off innocently enough - read a 5-book series by Beverly Lewis - and then it took off like wildfire from there.. I can't even tell you how many Amish books I have read now - both fiction and non-fiction - and I'm anxiously awaiting numerous documentaries (both DVD and VHS); more fiction; and more non-fiction that I have recently ordered from various sources..

Of course none of this is helping me get my horse and buggy..:sad1::sad1: I can't believe they're being so MEAN to me! I "could" have asked for a whole darn FARM!! :headache:

:rotfl::rotfl:

Do you know of any used horse and buggy sales? :rotfl::rotfl:

Well if they REFUSE (how rude!) to get you the horse and buggy, the LEAST they could do is send you to Lancaster so you can hitch a ride in one!!

C.Ann, if DD and DSIL won't get you your first choice I have a suggestion.

Last year we started seeing commercials on TV :happytv: for this item, recently we have seen print ads for it (even in USA today I think). It is an electric fireplace made entirely by the Amish! If there is one thing the Amish know about it is electricity! Add it to a fireplace and you have the best Amish made Electric Fireplace EVER!!!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
