This is the first vacation I have ever taken. We are taking our 7 year old boy who cannot walk. He weighs apprx 45lbs, so carrying long distances is out of the question. I would like to do local sight seeing, take pictures, visit shops, and anything else we can accomplish. I just don't want to get my hopes up to do something and find out the terrain is just too much to deal with, or that we can't get from one place to another because of the wheelchair. Any experience with trolleys, sidewalks, streets, etc... Advice, suggestions, all feedback is welcome. I just want to prepare myself and get the most out our ports.

Sincerely,
Knows nothing..... =)

Key West is very accessible as it's in the US. They have an accessible lift trolley tour or you can just tour on your own as most things are right in the port area and w/in walking distance. Cozumel has greatly upgraded their pier/port area but to get into the city itself will be a challenge as there are no curb cuts. Some of the excursions allow for a manual w/c but you'd have to carry him up the stairs into a bus- and there are no seatbelts in those busses. Grand Cayman requires a tender so you'd need to be able to carry him onto a tender and bring a folded manual w/c ( if that's possible). If you are on the Disney cruise, Castaway Cay is paved and there are complimentary sand w/c's for your use there.---Kathy

Thank you DCLfun!!! The information you have provided is GREAT news.... Though his wheelchair is manual, and small 21 in wide, it is not fold-able, but we can carry him up stairs. Hoping to find a way to get him to the pier/platform to pet a dolphin in Cozumel, due to a friend's suggestion that has visited there before. She mentioned something about a wagon ride, and that would be acceptable. Thank you again, I am slowly overcoming my fears. =)
