DCL 11/16/03 - Formal Night At Sea

Mike was on deck early Sunday morning getting pictures before very many others were roaming the decks. The rest of us got up around 7 am and dressed for the Character Breakfast in Parrot Cay. This dining room is very upbeat and festive. Everyone was in a great mood. The characters came out within minutes of us arriving and started making their rounds. It didn’t seem like we were rushed at all because each of the characters allowed time for us to take our own pictures and autographed both of the kid’s books. William had been difficult that morning and wouldn’t smile for any of the pictures we tried to take at various spots on deck 4, but his face lit up when they came out. Kaitlyn was totally stunned by the activity and attention. The only thing that I will do differently next time is send Mike to Topsiders to bring something for us to eat back to the room when we get up. There was so much going on that none of us ate much during breakfast. I quickly learned to juggle the books and camera. Neither William or Kaitlyn ate their breakfast until after the characters had left the dining room and they could relax.

After breakfast we went and took pictures by the Christmas tree. The ship was already fully decorated for the holidays and was beautiful. It was very elegant. We checked out Shutters and Mickey’s Mates for a lithium battery for the 35mm that ran out during breakfast since I was focused on being prepared with our new digital camera. I also wanted to see what scrapbook supplies they had for the cruise. Mike took Kaitlyn with him to book an excursion at St. Maarten. I took William to the Oceaneer’s Club. We relaxed in the room and got ready for the DIS meet at 11. Mike picked up William while I met Jo out on the aft deck at topsiders. We didn’t see anyone else, although later we found out we just missed Linda and Mary. We did get to enjoy some wonderful Nestle candy that is only available in Canada. The kids both really liked it.

We returned to the room so Mike and William could change into their suits and hit Topsiders before going to the Mickey Pool. Kaitlyn and I set off to meet Cinderella. We arrived 20 minutes early and were the tenth in line. Cinderella was wonderful with the kids. She took several minutes to talk to Kaitlyn while kneeling on the floor at her eye level. Kaitlyn was completely tongue tied. She went up and gave Cinderella a hug and both books. She could only say Uhuh to anything asked. They took a fantastic picture under the Christmas tree. Kaitlyn beamed all day! We went to Topsiders and met up with the guys. The pasta bar was yummy! We both changed and enjoyed the pool for the afternoon. The toddler ear was closed so when I asked if it would be up and running soon, the CM told me to let Kaitlyn use the other ear for the day. The fountains didn’t work for two days and by that point we were confidant that she would be OK in the regular pool. Of course she had a blast in the other ear. The water was very cold to me but it didn’t stop the kids from splashing for hours. The pool wasn’t crowded at all like I had expected. This was the case every day of the cruise, which was very nice for the kids.

We got ice cream and went back to the room. Kaitlyn didn’t exactly agree with our plans. Mike and Kaitlyn went to the theater to see Pirates of the Caribbean. She fell asleep soon after the movie started, which had been the plan. I took William to the club and went to Palo to meet the DIS ladies for High Tea. I had a lovely time with Kim, Linda, Jo, Mary, and Julie. We missed everyone else, but understood that some were not feeling very well. Everything we tried was good but we all skipped the trifle. They served little sandwiches with cucumber and salmon, chocolate éclairs, trifles, and scones. The servers were a bit pushy with rushing us thru everything. They sat us at 3:15 and began serving us before everyone had arrived. If you arrived late, you missed out on the previous courses. We didn’t let them push us out though & had a wonderful visit with each other. We weren’t the last table to leave Palo that afternoon.

I picked up William and returned to the stateroom to get ready for formal night. William didn’t get a nap so he was a little difficult. We missed the line for pictures with Mickey and Minnie in formalwear so headed right to Parrot Cay for dinner. I enjoyed the crab newburg, marinated salad, and rib eye. I skipped desert since we had eaten so much at High Tea. William fell asleep soon after we were seated and kept his head on the table until it was time to leave. Bayoki wrapped his chicken dinner to go and made a beautiful swan out of the foil. Kaitlyn met another three year old girl at a table next to us and the two of them played with her dolls in the corner. We were first in line for the picture with Mickey and Minnie after dinner so there wasn’t a very long wait. Once you figure out the timing for the character shots, it gets easier to fit everything in. We went to the room to change into jeans and PJs for the kids and then went to Shutters to check out the breakfast photos. Goofy walked up as we passed the atrium and William went up and gave him a HUGE hug. Kaitlyn was sweet too. We met Cinderella on the way into Shutters and again Kaitlyn was in awe. It touched my heart that she stopped and addressed Kaitlyn by name then asked if this was her brother William who had been busy playing while they visited earlier that day. Kaitlyn was wearing her Cinderella PJs so of course she had to comment on them. Kaitlyn floated the rest of the way to the theater to watch Finding Nemo. The sound system in the theater was very good.

We slept very well that night. The seas had increased and I was thankful that I was not ill. The waves were 8 - 15 feet so the challenge of moving around the ship that night had increased, especially in heels.

Now I know that if we don't make the formal pic that we can do it after dinner! It will be DD's 12th Birthday during Formal Night and I definately want to get our pictures!
