This article was posted to the Orange County Register www.ocregister.com today. I have been skeptical about the Pixar Pier conversion but it sounds like this might be a winner!

Beyond Infinity to Raise Disney Guests to New Levels

Anaheim, California - Today Disney announced an intriguing experience coming to the new “Pixar Pier” at their Disney California Adventure park. Disney will build a premium experience attraction named “Beyond Infinity”.

“Disney has perfected a new, immersive ride technology used in the Flight of Passage attraction opened last year here in Florida at Disney Animal Kingdom park,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger at a press conference today at the soon-to-open Toy Story Land at Walt Disney World. “Flight of Passage has proven to be a huge winner for our guests. This technology will be adapted and expanded for Beyond Infinity.”

There have been rumors of a replacement ride for the ill-fated “Maliboomer” ride which was closed in 2010. Maliboomer was located inside part of the expansive California Screamin’ rollercoaster ride. California Screamin’ is currently being rethemed as the Incredicoaster planned to open June 23. Iger confirmed that Beyond Infinity will be built on this unused space.

Beyond Infinity will immerse guests in a 3D world of Toy Story characters led by the inimitable Buzz Lightyear. The ride platform will move and rotate vertically as guests experience a wild flight through a space battle with the evil Emperor Zurg which virtually moves onto Buzz’s home planet “Morph”. The ride platform will climb up a vertical tower and then descend down a second tower which will maximize ride capacity.

Beyond Infinity will take guest immersion to a whole new level in more ways than one. At night Beyond Infinity will transform into Beyond Infinity: Dark Energy. Some of the projection screens inside Beyond Infinity will retract and allow guests on the ride to see outside into the Pixar Pier area. Amazingly, guests on the ride will be able to battle other guests on the ground and those zipping past on the Incredicoaster. Fixed virtual laser weapons will be located at key locations on the ground around Beyond Infinity and will also be added to the Incredicoaster much like what exists on the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and Toy Story Midway Mania attractions.

If that is not enough, Iger talked about a new extension to the Disneyland Mobile App that will be made available with Beyond Infinity: Dark Energy. The App will use the Family and Friends feature so guests on the ride can easily identify their family or friends on the ground and have a virtual battle just with them. It works similarly for those on the ground or riding the Incredicoaster.

This new experience does have its detractors. Respected Disney blogger Helen Parr would prefer the Incredicoaster ride remain completely separate from Beyond Infinity. “Disney is showing its inflexibility to guest feedback with this new ride concept”, she insisted.

“Count me among the supporters of the Beyond Infinity concept”, said another blogger Sid Phillips who online is known as Sid the Neighbor. “If Disney will provide me weapons to shoot at toys, you better believe I will use them!”.

Does premium experience = paid experience? As in you have to pay more than your park entry fee?
I believe the extra pay for the premium experience will be for the app to locate family and friends on the ground. I suppose this could be rolled into MaxPass though. :thumbsup2
