Getting rid of the old timers again? John and Marlena's storyline is just about the only one I watch now. Nick and Melanie is just too weird. Max, Stephanie, Chelsea, are boring. Let's not even get into Kate and Daniel. Sami and the new guy looks promising if they ever get past the three year old bickering. Chloe and Lucas?? Nahhhhhhhh Nichole and EJ might be interesting. Every year it seems to be the same story. Budget cuts and we get rid of everyone that is interesting.

posted: 1 HOUR 34 MINUTES AGOcomments: 34filed under: TV NewsPrintShareText SizeAAA(Nov. 19) -- Apparently even the fictional streets of Salem aren't safe from the recession - Soap Opera Digest is reporting that budget cuts on 'Days of Our Lives' have forced producers to axe two very long-time cast members. Deidre Hall (Marlena) and Drake Hogestyn (John), who have been on the show for 32 and 22 years respectively, are the first two casualties of the slump.


Hodestyn's character had gone missing before, but the dismissal feels more foreboding than his three-month hiatus last year. Executive Producer Ken Corday says, "The couple will be happily reunited after a long period of angst and separation and will be off-screen after January for an unknown period of time. It was a very tough decision to make."
'Days of Our Lives' recently received an eighteen-month renewal - a far cry from their last contract, which kept the show running for five years.

I wonder if taking a smaller salary per episode would enable the producers to keep the cast as it is?

However, I won't miss Marlena. I'm liking the new John however. But without Marlena there wouldn't be anything for him to do unless he got paired up with Kate?

Supposedly, the show asked Drake and Deidre to take pay cuts, and they refused. So, that left them with no choice but to get rid of them.

Well, gee whiz!! You'd think a cut in pay would be better than getting fired! I hope the other "old-timers" won't be getting fired too. As previous poster said, Kayla & Steve as well as Anna & Tony haven't been on much lately. Course the storyline hasn't been much either. If it gets much worse it won't matter if the show got a new shorter term contract--they'll lose the few viewers that are still hanging in there!

The other thing that bugged me, was the whole Jennifer & Jack thing. I loved her with Frankie but hated the fact she was ga ga over her raper..
I guess she forgot Jack raped her long ago and married him anyway

I think it was Kayla Jack raped, not Jennifer. She was his nurse and he fell in love with her.

They did the same thing with EJ and Sami, though. They tried to downplay the whole thing, but he still raped her!

Jack married Kayla, then Eve, the Jen. Funny he got divorced from Eve the same month he married Jenn But I know the whole Eve thing was for a trustfund or some scam wedding

Yea, Jack did rape Kayla. Jenn thought she was raped by Jack, but it was Lawrence.

I think Marlena would rather leave than take a pay cut because she probably could go to any other soap.

Me too! It would have been cool if he came back. I thought he was killed off on the other soap, but I guess not.
