Day trip to Gulf Coast

We will have a rental car this trip so I am thinking about a day trip to the Gulf Coast. My kids have never been to a beach and are not strong swimmers. I would like a place that is good for shelling and sand castles, but not necessarily a tourist destination either. Can this be found close to Disney?

So the Gulf Coast isn't as close as I had thought. We don't want to spend 2 1/2 hours just to get to the beach. So are the beaches on the East Coast okay for shelling? My DS just wants to do this very much and I would like to make it happen if I can. We are land locked where we live and just getting a trip to anywhere is a big deal for us so picking up seashells would be very exciting for him. Any suggestions for particular beaches?

We recently went to Jetty Park for the day, it took less than an hour to get there, they had some shells, not as many as we've seen on the Gulf, but still some decent ones. It was a great beach right at Port Canaveral, with a pier, restaurant, and you can watch the cruise ships leave. If you plan to go on a Thursday, Saturday, or Sunday, you will be able to see the Disney ships
On the Gulf, we usually go to Honeymoon Island and it is very nice, but it does take about 1hr 45min to get there.
