Day of Departure (DOD) Cheap Upgrade! (United)

I have been watching my flight for awhile now (purchased a long time ago with United CC airline miles) to see how many seats were still available.
I checked earlier this week and they had several First Class has several seats were open and it was $400 to upgrade my ticket, which was too expensive for me.

Last night I checked into my flight and saw they still had 4-5 First Class seats but now the cost was $1010!!

This morning, I checked one last time to see if my row was empty and the middle seat in my row was empty Just for the heck of it, I checked first class again as there were only 3 seats left and the upgrade cost dropped to $268! I hit the upgrade button so fast and then for some reason the app couldn't charge my flight on my attached CC so I tried the apple pay option and it went through.

I've never flown first class so I'm super excited. It's a redeye so hoping for some good sleep but also being at the front of the plane. Since I hadn't paid anything for my initial flight, this seemed like a great way to try it out without shelling out $$$$.

So, I suggest everyone check day of their flight because you never know what can happen

I do the same as you, check to see if the seat(s) next to me are still empty, but I never thought to check to upgrade online! That's a good tip, thanks. Usually I ask at the airport. I'm flying from east to west coast in about a week so maybe I'll start watching - nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I literally went from this thread to check my American flightsand the upgrades were there! One was $1050, but the other was $272! That's great....I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on that one!
