Day 3 – 5/28/02 (Tuesday)

I was going to post this on the Seaworld board, but then I thought maybe it belonged on the trip report board. This is the 3rd day of our 4 day trip.

We went to Seaworld on Tuesday.  Had the breakfast buffet at Sunset Grill again, broke a plate, but they were pretty nice about it.  That will teach me to try and fill my plate and DS’s plate at the same time.  We caught the shuttle in front of HRH, and arrived at Sea World about 9:30.  It was a very short drive, about 10 minutes. We went to Sea World in San Antonio about 6 years ago, and the main thing DS remembered from that trip was the water play area, so we headed to Shamu’s water harbor, but it wasn’t open until 11:00.  We rode the Wild Arctic helicopter simulation ride, which was really bumpy, I was starting to wonder how that helicopter pilot got his license, but the walk through after the ride was really interesting, that's where they have the Beluga whales.  Then we headed for Shamu stadium to get seats for the next Shamu show at 11:30. We grabbed some popcorn and nachos, and sat down above the splash zone to wait for the show.   The Shamu show was impressive, I just find it amazing that anyone can train Orcas to perform like that.  The people in the bottom rows definitely got soaked.  After the show we headed back to the Shamu's Happy Harbor water play area, which DS enjoyed.  Then we went to Kraken, the huge rolloer coaster, and rode it 2 times in a row.  There was no line at all for the Kraken, with the exception of the front row line.  DS thought the Kraken was the best roller coaster out of all of the coasters we rode, but I personally preferred the Hulk.  We tried to ride the Journey to Atlantis, but the sign indicated a 45 minute wait, so we skipped it.  We probably should have gone to that ride as soon as we got to the park, before the lines got long. We went through the Penguin Encounter, which was interesting but very dark, so it was difficult to see the penguins.  It is winter and there is little sunlight this time of year in the penguin’s natural habitats, and they try to reproduce the natural habitat as much as possible.  The shark exhibit was not open, unfortunately.  We always like to look at the sharks.  We went through the Manatee exhibit, which was very interesting.  We went to Dolphin Cove, the open pool where the dolphins are swimming, and happened to be there at feeding time.  At feeding time, you can purchase fish to feed the dolphins for $4 per cup.  Each cup has about 4 minnows in it.  They take pictures of the people who are feeding the dolphins, which you can purchase. We bought 2 cups and DS fed the dolphins.  They got a little aggressive during feeding time, and I never had really noticed how many teeth dolphins have until several of them were jockeying for position, trying to grab those minnows out of my son’s hand.  Still, it was quite an experience, and we both were able to pet some of the dolphins under the jaw, which is where they like to be rubbed, and I was only a little concerned about losing fingers.  We next went to feed the stingrays, which was also fun, and they don’t have teeth.  You can feed them anytime, it's also $4 per cup of 4 minnows. The rays seem to enjoy swimming close to the edge of the tank so that people can pet them.  We had a lot of fun with the rays, they seemed to be playing with us as they swam by splashing us with their fins.  We caught the 4:45 shuttle  back to HRH, the trip back took a little longer as we went by Wet and Wild to pick up more people, and dropped people off at Portofino Bay. When we got back to HRH, we headed out to the pool.  We both really loved the water slide at HRH, adults can go down it also. We had dinner at the Beach Club again, pizza and fruit plates, and then went to bed a little early.  I refused to watch Harry Potter again that night, but promised another viewing for the next evening, which would be our last night.  Seaworld was fun, although it seemed a little disappointing compared to the one in San Antonio. Maybe my memory is faulty, but it seemed as if the one in San Antonio was bigger, with a better water play area. But DS loved feeding the dolphins and the stingrays, so I'm glad we went.

Sherrilatte,
No, we didn't go to WetnWild this trip. I'd like to go next time, maybe, but we just had too much to see and do in 4 days. I would like to have spent another day at US/IOA, just riding MIB a few more times and some of the other rides and shows that we missed.
