Cast: DH (40), me (40), DD#1 (11), DD#2 (8), DS (5)
Monday December 29
We left Cary, NC where we had been visiting DH's sister at 4AM. We made it into Orlando somewhere around 2:30 after some wicked traffic in downtown Orlando. This is the first time we ever drove and we probably should have taken a bypass or something, but the AAA triptik never mentioned it.
We checked into the Dolphin for our one night stay with the teacher rate. She offered me a balcony for another $30, but I declined. For some reason (because I am in Starwood, maybe?) we ended up with a balcony anyway, on the 2nd floor with the grotto pool in the distance. DH had no interest in swimming. We had a discussion about whether or not to use one day of our hoppers when it was already 3PM, but we decided what the heck and went to MGM on the boat. I had been warned about the crowds but it was worse than I expected. The most crowded time I had been there previously was 4th of July. Fast passes for R&R and ToT were all gone, and the wait was 100-120 minutes for each. We don't do those kind of waits. I was afraid we had wasted a day of our hoppers. We decided to do WWTBAM and were one of the last seated. DD#1 had to sit in the row in front of us and was disappointed as she usually cheats off of me.
I have been in the hot seat in 2001 and in 2002. The first time I lost on the 32000 question, the second time on the 2000. Both were stupid mistakes. I gave each of my DDs a 1000 pt. hat and let them trade all but the 1000 pin. My goal has always been another trip to the hot seat to get a hat for DS, but in July 2003 I never made it past 3rd. This time I was in 7th after the 1000 point question of the kid in front of me. His 32000 points question was "In what Bob Fosse Musical was the song, 'Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets"? I pushed the right answer right away (Damn Yankees) as the school I teach at did that show in 2000. The kid phoned a stranger and was given the wrong answer and took it. I noticed a CM sidling my way. They announced my seat was the top number! I made my way to the seat and was very excited. I had 2 or 3 questions perfect for me--which of the following is not a part of speech, what is the ceremony called when a girl scout moves from one level to another, which Wizard of Oz character is pusillanimous (Cowardly), etc. I did use my lifelines on questions I really knew, but after my earlier losses I didn't want to take chances.
Before I knew it I had the 32000 polo shirt, FINALLY! I was ecstatic. My complete guess on the 64000 point question was right! I then got the 125000 and 250000 point questions! I was two questions away with no lifelines!
Then: game show host Jack Narz is the brother of which other talk show host: Art Fleming, Bill Cullen, Tom Kennedy, or Bob Barker?
WHO THE HECK IS JACK NARZ???????
I decided to walk away but the crowd, who had been wildly cheering me on, didn't like that at all! With a couple of seconds left I guessed Bob Barker and was wrong. Oh well, I only lost 3 pins! DH said the host told the crowd to "shut up" when I left but I was fine. When I got out people all over were congratulating me and telling me how well I did! It was really sweet.
We went to dinner to celebrate and got into Mama Melrose with no wait and had chicken flatbread pizzas. Then we decided to head over to Epcot on the bus. The waits for TT and MS were ridiculous--220 minutes for TT was posted! We ended up walking back to the hotel via the Boardwalk, which was all lit up. We didn't swim although the water was warm enough. We decided to check out the heavenly beds, which WERE heavenly! We hooked up the portable DVD player for the kids but they were asleep before the movie was 1/2 over.
