Dave Ramsey and Disney

We just left Disney and had to laugh... While in HS we stopped by that little bookstore, "Writer's Stop." In there they were selling Dave Ramsey's TMMO book. I turned to DH and said, "So when you've come here and totally blown the budget and racked up the credit cards, you can buy the book and feel better.

It seemed a little ironic that in the land of spending there was the TMMO.

Actually there is kinda a pattern on the Dave Ramsey show of people celebrating being debt free by going to Disney. Often people who drive stop by "Financial Peace Plaza" on the way.

Dave Ramsey isn't against spending, he is against going into debt. Huge difference. It is 100% possible to go to Disney, completely within your budget and not put one cent on a credit card.

That is kind of ironic. I think Dave's big thing is self denial now so you can have financial stability later. I wish I could be that disciplined. If I were to follow Dave to the letter, we wouldn't be going to Disney as long as I have a balance on a credit card and 20 years to go on my mortgage. I think Dave would rather I put what I'd spend on a Disney trip towards my mortgage and/or CC debt. Not gonna happen. That said, we don't charge anything on our Disney trips. It's all either debit cards or Amex that is paid off as soon as we get home. I agree it's silly to go further into debt for a vacation. I can still work to get rid of CC debt and take vacations, I just won't wipe out the CC debt as quickly. I can hear Dave now - "Well that's just a stupid plan only a moron would follow.".

DH wants to know if the book was priced 3x the normal Barnes and Noble rate since it was for sale in Disney. Selling TMMO in WDW is pretty funny. DH and I are following the plan. My ticker shows when we will have our credit cards and card paid off and will be celebrating in WDW. When we get home we'll tackle student loans then knock out the mortgage. LLNO FTW!

This hits way too close to home!!! I was recently 'hated on' and taken off a discussion board because I'm also on the DR plan and gave my opinion against going into debt or using credit cards to pay for vacation. I also suggested actually looking at the fine print on vacation clubs and questions to ask... Really... I'm weird??

You can vacation without paying off the house. He'd rather you pay off debt. Build up an emergency fund so you don't have to go back into debt when the roof leaks, etc. Start saving for retirement and kids college. And start having FUN.

If you're spending $1k+ on debt, once the debt is gone, that money goes to the bank of YOU.
