Dating Question: In your experience, has online dating worked for you if you are living in the suburbs instead of living in a big city?

Hasn’t worked for me at all but could be as I’ve never tried it. I know people mostly from large urban areas that it worked for and also those it didn’t.

Not me but a friend is dating with it now.

Apparently, there are a few ick factor things to avoid with photos the first being gym & shirtless photos.
One friend went out with a guy who apparently posed in front of someone else's boat, so nothing fake.
Maybe hire someone to take realistic photos that look natural/normal/friendly/appealing?

Never used the apps as they came out after I was married, but I did use a few "dating sites" like OkCupid once in a while when I was on the market. But they were more for one night stands and never led to anything substantive. Then I met my second wife in a coffee shop and hit on her the old fashioned way...that was 14 years ago TODAY.

I live in a smaller more rural area. I was NOT successful online dating. Can't say if I would have been more successful in larger city.

I’ve never done online dating because I met my S/O very early on. My BIL and SIL were living in the suburbs and met through online dating. They’ve been married about 10 years.

It’s worth a try, if for no other reason than to know you tried and no longer have to wonder “what if?”

I was married before they were a thing, but I know a few couples who met that way and have been happily married for 15+ years.

I remember back in college (early 80s) one of the sororities had a charity “Computer Match” dating event. For maybe a $2 donation you’d be matched with someone who was scientifically guaranteed to be compatible. You filled out a form (like a SAT answer sheet), the sorority sisters entered the data, and the computer picked your date.

My date was a nice enough guy but there was no chemistry.

Match.com worked for me in 2008 when I was living in the suburbs. She was living in the smaller of two main cities in the area and I was in a second ring suburb. We were engaged in 8 weeks, married in just over a year, I took her to WDW for the first time for our honeymoon and this year will be 15 years of marriage celebrated with another trip to WDW.

Online dating wasn't a thing when DW and I got together. Heck, the internet was mainly just message boards and AOL.

But, wouldn't it depend on the size of the suburb, how far away from the "city" you were, and how far you're willing to travel? Let's be honest, the more people you're physically close too, the better chance of finding a "match"? Someone who's in a suburb of NYC is going to have more potential matches than someone in a suburb of Cincinnati, who's going to have more potential matches than someone in a suburb of Topeka (I assume, just guessing).

I have some friends that recently celebrated their 16 year wedding anniversary that met through an online dating site. They were living in suburbia of a large metro area.

Back when I was single I lived in the burbs and had a lot of success with online dating. I don't think I went on a single date with anyone from my particular suburb and we mostly went into the city or inner ring suburbs for the dates but unless you are unwilling to travel at all or live extremely remote using the suburbs as an excuse for lack of online dating success is just a crutch.
