Hi everyone,

We just booked a trip for Aug next year but I'm concerned about my husband. He doesn't have a mobility issue. He is on several prescription medications for kidney disease, gout, high bp, chron's, rheumatoid arthritis... As you can imagine, regardless of preventative things he tries to take the combination of drugs tends to give him constant stomach/bathroom issues that come on quickly and often. He told me he'll go but he'll just sit on bench while I take our boys on the rides because he won't stand in the lines and be embarrassed trying to squeeze through people to get out of line if he needs to. And if it's more then an hour it could be twice. We are staying off-site so FP+ is only 30 days out. Last time we didn't really get anything good. Should I just cancel? He thinks the pass is for children with sensory issues. Please help. Not sure how to approach this, he's stubborn and proud. :(

Thank you!

he needs to be able to explain why cannot wait in lines that are not mobility or stamina related. a strong Touring plan with well timd fast passes could minimize any issue. a DAS is NOT limited to sensory disorders

DX does not matter he needs to say why he can not wait in line and why waiting out side will help him. He will need to go to GR at seeing about the DAS. No one here can say yes or no you will just have to wait until you get to Disney to see if you get the pass.

Maybe, you can talk to his doctor and see if there is something that can help with the bathroom urges.

Using a scooter may help. Most people in a sitting position don't feel the urges as much.

Even with a DAS some lines like Flight of Passage and Toy Story Mania can still have long waits.

Good scheduling helps, too. Always try to use a restroom before getting in a ride line. Be more careful after meals. Stay away from trigger foods. Maybe, do some shows right after a meal. It's easier to exit most shows if need be. Sitting in the back helps on that count at most shows. As with everything there can be an exception, here, too where it might be impossible to exit a show easily.

As a last resort consider incontinent supplies. I would wear a diaper if it would help me do Disney better. We took our mother and she needed to use a diaper. She was good about 90% of the time, but we were happy she had the extra protection. We took many restroom stops, too. I assume you are going to use a car being offsite. You may want to carry extra slacks and underwear just in case in the car.

Use strategies as others have suggested, but I would also apply for the das. You are correct that it is not just for children with sensory issues

If you do this before going to the show ask the CMif you can exit if you need to. ( you do not have to tell them why) and also ask where to sit so that if you have to exit you will bother the fewest people. Some show exit from the back some from the opposite side you entered

While the DAS will allow one wait outside the queue at a time, be prepared for a lot of waiting, as it is based on standby time. I'd suggest switching to onsite if you have time to get those 60 day FP+ booked.

Also, have a back-up plan in case the urge to go comes while he is in the FP+ queue on his DAS. If he has to leave, you guys can't stay in the queue and ride. The DAS holder must ride.

What's his plan in case he has to go during the ride, BTW? Having just come back two weeks ago from WDW, and having taken two unplanned rides (shuttle to urgent care, ambulance to ER) and then being on a multitude of meds myself, I know how it feels to be trapped on a ride and need to use the restroom. I was able to kind of 'meditate' myself out of the urgency, but it took a lot of my energy. And I didn't get any enjoyment from the attraction, as my focus was inward. I second the notion to consult with his doctor before the trip.

I do have concerns for myself - I have ulcerative colitis and always travel now with emergency antibiotics in case of a flare up. I personally wouldn't get a DAS as it would affect the rest of our family and am ready to sit it out or rest if required.

Some things to remember (coming from someone with a medical issue that causes frequent and sometimes urgent bathroom needs):

1) With the DAS you enter the FP+ line. Sometimes this line can still be 20 minutes long and rarely even longer. Will he be able to wait for that 20 minutes and then the length of the ride itself? Always best to plan for the worst is my motto.

2) The person with the DAS MUST ride the attraction for the DAS to be used.

3) Even after the FP+ line, you will also have any sort of preshow, after preshow wait, and then the ride itself. While the waits after the preshow are normally very fast, it all adds even more time to the overall experience.

4) Some attractions can be longer as well and you will not be able to leave once on the ride. For example, Carousel of Progress is 21 minutes and you can NOT exit during the show. Living with the Land is 14 minutes. Spaceship Earth is 16 minutes. So make sure you do your homework and don't end up in a situation where you are stuck with no options.

I think you should apply for the DAS. While the points others here have made are very valid (you still have to wait on a FP return line, they can also run long, you can still have an issue on the actual line, etc), it STILL helps. It is easier to get off the FP line in most cases than the regular lines. (I could tell some really graphic stories in the respect, but will not go there).

We stay onsite, so we use the 60 day FP+ window, of course. With that, we often only use DS DAS 1-2X per weekly trip, but it still is beneficial.

Thank you all. I didn't even think about checking with a CM before the shows to be seated near an exit for him. Good point! He already said he wouldn't go on something like Ellen's adventure. That one isn't an issue anymore obviously. I know with longer lines there is just no way he'd excuse himself to try to get back and forth in and out of line to use the restroom and have people think he was cutting in line to get back in line with us. I have a friend who was there a couple weeks ago and she said the crowds weren't bad at all. So if he got it, we might not have to use it much. I will make sure we see his doctors prior to going and we have trip insurance just in case.
