Wow! Is this super early, or normal for up your way? Our temps are much lower than normal for this time of year in Ohio. I love the fall and winter, but would like each season to last it's "normal" time! Good luck to you!:goodvibes

it gonna happen to all of us soon...fall is setting in here....for the last week it's been mid to high 80s...a cold front is coming through tonight and this weekend will only be in the 60s....I say bring it on, I'm ready for some cooler weather.

And this is when I remember why I'm not moving to Alaska! :sad2:

I'm looking forward to and dreading the cooler weather all at the same time. I'd never make it in Alaska! Snow before the end of September is just not right!

actually .. it isn't bad... but we have had a beautiful and warmer than normal fall... so the snow is not welcome yet. We usually have first frost on average Sept. 7 .. we didn't have it until Sept. 24 this year... so very late. Still . . . I am just not ready for it this year. Of course it does mean the Aurora will be visible if the clouds go away ;)

Well, for moving to Fairbanks, its the dark for most of the day and the -50 that should be off putting, not the snow - if its snowing, its cloudy and if its cloudy then its warmer - usually only -20! :rotfl:

In 2009 we went to Maui in early Dec. and came home to -40 to -50 for three weeks ... that is when I finally started asking "Why the **** does ANYONE live here?" And I was born in Alaska and have lived here my entire life! :lmao:
Though I have to say we don't usually have the -40 to -50 ... and if so only for a short bit, it will get -10 to -20 for part of the winter, but that I can handle. Of course, after three weeks at -50, -20 is darn near shorts weather! :rotfl2:
And there there is the nights with dancing northern lights, ice art sculptures, and the dogsled events.

Ah, man. Seeing the Northern Lights is definitely on my bucket list! I guess this just means I'm going to have to go back to Alaska again!

It's been 86F here today, which is unseasonably warm! Doing PE (gym class) all afternoon in the sun was horrid! (Whilst training to be a primary school teacher, we have to do the classes we'll end up teaching!)

I feel your pain! Although we have not had snow yet, we are watching it creep down Pioneer Peak today. It was actually raining this morning, but now it's beautiful and sunny. Cold, but sunny! (We're outside Wasilla.) I'm just missing the light! Where did it go? It seems like last week we still had plenty of sunshine after work, but now it's down right after I get home......:sad2:

Yep.... its coming ..sooner rather than later. They had the Parks Hwy closed yesterday for a bit due to fog and it snowed in Denali.
Last week was beautiful and warm, then the weekend hit and temps dropped.
The flakes were very small and only lasted a few minutes... but that first one you see . . . :scared1:

Oh well - here's to a snow filled (and slightly warmer) winter - so we can have sledding, skiing and dogsledding! :thumbsup2

Beautiful! What time of year is best to see the Aurora?

Sayhello

I hate to have to say it .. but winter is really the only time to come see it. While the Aurora is all year round, you can't see it during the summer as its just too light out most of the day - we have twilight pretty much all night and you just don't see the lights. I would say November - March are your best bet.

More info on the Aurora at http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast
Do some research on it for the time frame you want to come, as the Aurora depend on solar activity levels.

Yikes! Well, some day!

By the way, I love the museum at your University!

I am very sorry to hear that! The older I get, the more I hate the snow. At least it is nice on the weekend when I can stay inside and bake for Christmas!! Keep warm.
