Daisy Scout Leaders?

Any Daisy leaders out there? What have you done with your troop to help them earn their petals? We're starting a new trip this fall...and I'm brand new at this level of scouting. We'll have a very small troop...just 6-7 girls in my dd5's school.

I was my daughters daisy scout leader this past year. We had a hour and a half meeting, ever other Tuesday. We also tried to do one outing a month, but that didn't always happen.

Most of the petals we took care of during the meeting. Some of them, we only did discussions about. There school had a "Help beautify your school day" where we planted flowers and pulled weeds around the school, so we all went to that for one of the petals (I don't remember which one). The one that delt with taking care of yourself, we made a couple of healthy snacks. We also went and visited the local police department for the respecting authority petal.

One thing I would suggest. Have a back-up plan for any of the girls who miss a meeting where you are working on a petal. They can always just discuss it with their parents at home. Since the petals go in a little circle, it is obvious if a child doesn't have one, and that can really hurt their feelings.

Good luck. The Daisy's are a lot of fun. As long as you have a game, snack and craft, they are happy!!

The only thing I would have done diferently in retrospect is the tunic. You wear it one year, and its pretty steep. I saw troops that drew the petals on a t-shirt with black fabric marker, and then colored in the petals. I wish we had done that. Not only is it cheaper, but the girls can do it. "Today we learned about "x", color in a petal blue" as opposed to, here's your petal, give it to your mom and hope she gets a chance to sew it on. LOL.

When I saw the OP, I was so jealous!!! I miss scouting days. I co-lead my dd32 troop from brownie thru sr. scout level (no Daisy level when she first started) and made some great friends along the way. I still live in the same town and occasionally see one of my "scouts" and they never fail to mention what great times we had over the years. Scouting is truly a volunteer activity that benefits both giver and receiver. Good luck!

The website is very helpful as well as information on how long you meet. We are really at the beginning. My co-leader and I have just gone to the initial meeting (and had already cleared the fact that we wanted to start a troop at our school with the principal).

Our girls are already very busy with lots of activities...so we want to make this fun, but not just "another activity" to fit into the schedule. So we are thinking of meeting just once or twice a month. We really were thinking once a month, but maybe it should be twice a month (one regular meeting and one "outing"). As I mentioned, it is a small group of girls who mostly already know each other and are in the same class (and the school doesn't usually do field trips in K)...so the outings really won't be overwelming- they are part of the reason we wanted to start the troop.

WWW.makingfriends.com is a good resource for petals kits. Although I have never bought any items from her, I like the idea of all of it in one package.

Congratulations and thank you - Being a Scout leader is great! We used the scoutingeb.com, makingfriends.com and scoutsongs.com a lot when we did Daisies. The Daisy coloring book was a good opening activity to get them thinking about the petal we were doing that day. Then we would do an activity associated with that meetings petal. Then do the other things we discussed in our circle.
I had been a cub scout/ boy scout leader for several years, but our youngest is a girl so we did Daisies last year and loved it! We are now Brownies!
