D23 Expo 2009

On September , the D23 expo took place In the Anaheim Convention Center.D23 is the official Disney fan club and the expo is the first ever official disney convention. On the first day we got there at 7:30 am. The first thing we saw when we were getting close was a lady dressed as Snow White. Then as we reached the entrance of the convention center we saw a grown man dressed as Pinocchio. The first thing I said to my mother was “If this place is filled with people like that I’m out of here!” And we were happy to see that they were the only ones dressed as characters. Here’s a picture of the entrance sign:

When we entered the lobby we went over to the ticket redemption booths and got our wrist bands. We got silver colored ones which meant it was for all four days. As soon as we began walking around we got some free bags and then we noticed there was a huge line forming right outside hall A. it turned out to be the line to see the Bob Iger presentation, so we got in line. We waited for about 20 minutes until they moved our line to the arena queue right outside the arena which is were the presentation was going to take place. At the arena queue we waited for about an hour and then they started letting us through. We had to turn in all electronics and then they would check our bags and then they would use those metal detector things to check for any hidden recording devices. Once we were in there we waited for about another half hour mostly because they started late. First we watched a 10 minute video of all that the Disney company is and then Mr. Iger talk for a while. After he finished someone got a nights stay at the dream suite. After that we saw the first 30 minutes of Princess and the frog. It is an awesome movie. All of you have to go see it when it comes out!
After that we went to the Beauty and the Beast 3D panel discussion and preview screening. There was Paige O’Hara and some other three guys that I don’t remember the names of. But I do remember that Glen Keane was there and he was talking about how he came up with how Beast looks. He even told us that Beast has a Baboon butt! After their discussion they showed us the first 20 minutes of the movie in 3-D including the Beauty and the Beast (reffering to the song) scene. Beauty and the Beast is set to release in the next year or two. Here’s a picture:

After that we checked out the items that were to be auctioned that Saturday. They include:

Parks & Resorts Exhibit

This exhibit was the largest in the whole expo and it was all about the parks and other things associated with the parks. Outside the exhibit there was a huge mural with posters of many attractions and movies. As you entered into a small room the entrance would be closed with a large curtain. There was a large screen at the front of the room with a giant TV on it. Once the curtain was closed the announcer began speaking and a short video appeared on the screen. Here is a video from Orlando Attractions Magazine which was posted on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyHhsGVGPak

Once the video was over the screen opened up and we entered a large room that had lots of things about cars land. They had some miniature sets of what the new land will look like. Once I approached the first model I noticed that the man behind the rope, telling guests about cars land, had a name tag that said WED enterprises. At first I thought to myself “oh cool! I wonder where he got that!”. I was expecting the same cast member badge that they all wear. After I thought about it a little while, a feeling of excitement and happiness rushed all around me. I figured out that they were actual Walt Disney Imagineers telling people about what they had worked on. I guess they just had some vintage style name tags bearing the old WED enterprises logo or maybe that is the way their name tags are. I immediately walked up to one and asked him to give me some basic information about cars land. Even though I already knew most of it, I really really really wanted to talk to the Imagineer. After we finished talking with that Imagineer, my mother and I walked over to the next imagineer and talked to him. After that we went to go check out a model of Lightning McQueen. Here is a video of McQueen at the expo: the reason that there is no audio is because they have not gotten the actors who voice the characters to do the audio for the ride yet.

Next was a model of the cars racing ride, I forget what it is called. As I was walking towards the model I noticed that the two Imagineers that were there were Kathie Mangum and some other famous Imagineer that I can’t remember the name of D: I was so excited to see the Imagineer with one of the coolest last names, Mangum! Once we finished speaking to Kathy, we went to the next area.

The next area was mostly about robotics and audio animatronics. They had an Abraham Lincoln and a next generation robot. Here is a link to the video of the next gen robots: I'll post it later

Next there was an interactive sand play area. It was fun because it was not like your typical sand box. Images would be projected on to the sand and the shapes you made in the sand would come to life. It is a bit difficult to explain but I’ll try. So, for example, the host would start telling us about sea turtles and how their eggs are laid on the beach. The host told us to make little holes in the sand box and the imaginer at our sand box used some special magical stick to make eggs appear in those holes. And the turtles would hatch from the eggs and go to the water. I know, bad description.

Between the robots and magical possessed sand boxes, they had a character meet with Wall-E and Lucky the Dinosaur. I was not able to take a picture with them because our schedule was too jam packed :(

Next there was information about the new cruise ship (Disney Dreams), info about the new Hawaiian Resort (whose name has recently been announced). And the new statue that will be in the lobby of the Disney Dreams (I was not able to get a picture of it because it was not yet revealed at the DCL presentation)

At the end of this exhibit they had many things about the new Hong Kong Disneyland expansion. They are adding three lands: Mystic Manor, Grizzly Trail and Toy Story land <insert cricket sound here> Mystic Manor is about a world explorer who collects artifacts from all over the world and keeps them at his mansion. He has many themed rooms filled with these amazing objects. He also has an enchanted music box and a mischievous pet monkey. Well, the story is, you are invited to look around his house but he tells you not to open the magic music box. And guess what! The monkey (I forget what his name is so let’s call him Jack) opens the enchanted music box and the mysterious powers of the box make the whole mansion come to life. The Imagineer that was telling us this gave us such great detail, we were all amazed. It sounds like this attraction itself is worth the visit to HKD. But it will not open anytime soon. Next, was Grizzly Trail. I asked the Imagineer what the story behind the land was and she was a bit amazed. She told me I was the first one to ask such a question :) She told me that the little town out in the west of the US was build during the gold rush. Soon after people moved in they discovered that the town was sitting on a great many geysers. Well the geysers exploded and basically tore the town apart. People moved out and the Bears moved in. so the main attraction there is a mine train rollercoaster. Your traveling through the mines when a bear causes you to make a wrong turn and you have a big adventure. Toy Story land… well there is not much.
