I want to get a new digital camera before our June trip and wanted to know if anyone can weigh in on which camera would be better ... Sony Cyber-shot 8.1 Megapixel (Model DSCT100) or Canon Powershot A710 7.1 Megapixel. Both have the image stabilizer which is what I really want on my camera. We currently have the Canon Powershot A540 but it does not have the image stabilizer and we had alot of our December pictures turn out bad because of that.

I know the Sony Cybershot I mentioned above is just recently out and I'm not sure about the Canon A710. I'm not looking for fancy picture taking - just point and shoot. My DH and I will be vacationing in June by ourselves for our 25th anniversary and I know we will be turning over our camera to others to take our pictures and for such a special occasion I just want these pictures to turn out. :goodvibes

Any advice will be appreciated.

Here's a complete review for the Canon: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_a710-review/

I can't find a review of the Sony, but here's the specs:

A quick comparison of feature differences:
-Canon is cheaper (probably because it's older) by about $100.
-Canon's got more optical and more digital zoom. Optical is better.
-Canon's got more manual settings.
-Sony's got higher Max resilution (more megapixels) but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
-Canon's got a broader aperture setting and supports conversion lenses
-Sony's got MUCH high ISO -- remains to be seen if it's GOOD high ISO, but just having up to 3200 is probably an indicator that it's better in low light.
-Sony's got a bigger LCD.
-Sony's lighter by 2 oz (could make a difference carrying in a shirt pocket).
-Canon uses AA batteries, Sony uses proprietary batteries.
-Sony's got more onboard memory (but, only 31M)

IMO, features that matter the most:
In Canon's favor: cheaper, better optics (zoom and aperture), manual settings, AA batteries (cheap and reliable).
In Sony's favor: high ISO, bigger LCD, lighter weight, more onboard memory.

My quick-and-dirty recommendation :) :
If you were planning to take more outdoor pics with zoom, the Canon's probably going to be better for you.

If you were planning to take more indoor pics w/o zoom, the Sony's probably better for you.
