We have a cookie thread, how about a frosting thread. What kind of frosting do you use on your sugar cookies when you decorate them? I don't like the powdered sugar one so I am looking for other ideas.

I use royal icing. It doesn't taste terrific, but it's great for decorating if you use a pastry bag. You basically just whip egg whites (or the reconsituted powdered whites if you are raw egg phobic) till stiff and then start adding powdered sugar until you have a thick, glossy icing. You can then divide it up and tint it different colors.

I have always used a powdered sugar icing and people rave over it. I use 1 stick margerine, 1 tsp. vanilla, about 1 lb of powdered sugar and a few drops of milk, as needed, for consistency. I use blue bonnet margerine as I like the flavor best and I make many batches and use food coloring. It is a rich and buttery taste but not easy to pipe so I go for taste, not beauty. :thumbsup2
