Is there anyone here who has done Custodial in a past or current program? I've been accepted into that role for this summer, and I was just wondering what it was like.

For example, do you still use the cast deployment and "bump" tickets to move around during the day? And what is a typical day like? Are you just assigned to keep a specific area of the park clean, or are you assigned to like, trash duty or sweeping or bathrooms for a few hours then bumped to another task?

And also, I notice a lot of people say it's a pretty independent job; how close are you generally to your co-workers? And are the managers generally able to work with you on scheduling? (I ask this because my sister graduates from high school this year, and I'll need to go home for this. I'm also trying to bring my family down for a few days, their first time to WDW, so I'm going to try to get time off to spend with them. Fingers crossed.)

I know these are a lot of random questions, but thank you for entertaining them. ^_^

I did custodial for the summer program in 2007. I worked at Epcot WS. Everything I mention here, will be refering to WS.

There were no "bump" notices. You spent the whole shift in one area (so you weren't bumping anyone). You were either assigned to Streets or Restrooms for the shift. At WS, you had 1 country for Streets and 2 countries for Restrooms. So for example, you could have UK Streets, or Germany/Italy Restrooms. Streets is where you walk around with the pan and broom, and make sure the garbages are taken care of in your area. Restrooms is where you take care of your restrooms (keep everything stocked, everything is clean, empty the garbages, ect).

Yes, custodial is VERY independant. You don't see a lot of the other CMs during the shift usually (if you have restrooms, you may see your male/female counterpart once in awhile). But I was able to be friendly with the CMs in my area (especially the other CPs). For those who enjoy the freedom and guest interaction, this role is perfect. And as for scheduling, that can vary by location. But if the time is during slower time periods, that can help.

Bumping just in case anyone else comes and wants to chat about it.

Joanna, I can't thank you enough. You're helpful and kind in every thread, everywhere I go. I'm Pete, nice ta meet ya.

I'm excited and looking forward to see where I get placed. I think I'll be happy anywhere, just hope it's not Animal Kingdom. Don't get me wrong, I love that park too but for some reason I find all the other ones more appealing to work at.

You're welcome Pete. :)

Does anyone know if the custodial costume changes depending on where you work? If so, any examples?

No. The custodial costume is the same everywhere (except in AK. It's a little different with the color).

Speaking of the Custodial costumes, anyone have any good pictures? I'm curious about the different variations.

And a very silly question: Is it possible to wear pants every day instead of shorts? Or vice-versa?

You'll have to excuse the photo quality (I didn't take the picture with my camera). But this is the general custodial costume (I can't find a photo of the AK version, but I'm still looking). The bottom isn't shown, but it's all white. And yes, you can wear either pants or shorts. I usually wore pants (even during the summer).

Awesome! Thank you so so SO much. The pic is precious, btw! I love me some Captain Jack. ^_^

So it was survivable in pants? Hooray! I'm a pants kinda gal...I know that's what I'll prefer, provided I don't pass out. Hahaha.

Thanks! That was taken at a CM event, which I worked (Captain Jack happened to be a good friend of mine).

It really wasn't too bad. I prefered wearing pants because I felt cleaner that way.
