I would like to get my DD (12-years-old) a good curling iron for Christmas. I've seen the ads for the flat iron/curling iron combos, but I am not sure how good they are. She would like to do soft curls and has stubborn hair that has some natural body (not stick straight). It is well past her shoulders. Any ideas :)

My daughter is 12 as well. She has been using a smaller head flat iron the most. I usually get ConAir or something on the cheaper side. I also make sure that it has an automatic shut off just in case she forgets. Though she is really good about unplugging and turning it off. DD also has an iron the just waves her hair (like a crimper just more of a wave), a crimper, a wand and a regular curling iron. She does not like the wand at all. She pretty much uses the flat iron to curl and straighten her hair. She have thick hair with some body and curl to it. More so with the humidity.

I've used a bunch of the fancier curling irons and I keep coming back to my con air. It was the first curling iron I got and it still works for me today. I also highly recommend their flat iron.

Thanks! I like the "waver" idea. I will check that out. I agree that auto shut off is crucial!
