Curious about opinions on the Russell Brand/Jonathan Ross/BBC controversy

I have heard that Brand had already said in his show the previous week about his "relationship" with the grand daughter so it wasn't new information. Also I read in the paper that Andrew Sachs had been shown the edited programme and had not complained.

It was talked about the previous week Claire (I listened to his podcast every week). Russell made a joke about it then too and there were no complaints

The outrage and complaints came from the use of the F word...which is ridiculous in my opinion - you hear it all the time!

I haven't listened to Russel Brand (don't listen to radio 2) but have 2 points

1 That prank call he made to the tip line about the sex attacks was a pathetic attempt of humour at the expense of women who have been sexually assaulted

Rex Features
Russell Brand has been condemned by a rape charity after calling a sex attack hotline during his stand-up act, The Sun reports.

An audience in Northampton witnessed the comic call the hotline and claim that he had seen "the underpass attacker", a man police have been hunting following three sex attacks in the Midlands town.

In a video posted on YouTube, Brand took a mobile phone from a member of the audience and told the police operator: "I had someone come near my underpass. He was dressed atrociously. He looked like Timmy Mallett."

When the call handler requested Brand's telephone number, he replied: "I didn't know it was a dating line. Would you be interested in going out for dinner?"

Lynda Yorke of Leicester Rape Crisis blasted Brand, stating: "I don't think it's amusing. It's in very poor taste. The issue of sexual assault is often belittled and such callous behaviour is extremely hurtful to the victims."

Northamptonshire police also slammed the comic, with a spokesman saying: "We would discourage anyone from making such hoax or frivolous calls."

Brand later apologised for making the prank call, admitting that he was "devastated by the possibility I may have offended vulnerable people".
2 WILL SOMEONE GIVE THAT SCRUFF A COMB why on earth does he look like he never combs his hair?

using the F word just shows a lack of intelligence and maturity.

cant understand why o why the PM had to make a statment on it, if he's got time to waste...i can think of a few things for hime to do :rotfl:

dont like either Brand or Ross, im not into crude/rude/swearers etc.
i know what theyre like so i dont watch or listen to them (i know they have many fans) id expect them to pull a prank like this.
cant believe how much this has snowballed, hopefully there will be proper news soon :goodvibes

I guess this was an accident waiting to happen.

Standards on TV (and radio) have been slipping for many years to a point where I can't be bothered to watch much other than sport or decent films.

The reason only two people complained about the original broadcast is that the audience for Mr Brand's show is likely to be made up of younger listeners who already like his type of humour and less likely to be offended by it.
When the incident was made more public (via TV and newspapers) the number of complaints rose dramatically.

It has been interesting that polls have been showing that there is a split based on age groups as to whether this stunt was offensive or not. Younger people don't really see what all the fuss is about.

Personally, I'm damned if I can see the humour in ringing up an 78 year old man and abusing his family. Yes, I know his granddaughter is hardly a paragon of virtue, but that is not really the point.
Will Jonathon Ross find it all a big laugh when somebody rings up one of his parents and makes similar comments about his daughter? I doubt it.

Has it been blown up out of proportion? Probably, but I certainly feel that there has to be some control over what is allowed to be broadcast. I agree with everyone who has said that the producer of this particular show was wrong it letting it be aired.

I see this as an extension of the way things have been going in recent years. Who wants TV chefs effing and blinding all the time for goodness sake! It's lost it's shock value a long time ago and is now tedious in the extreme.
Do we really need to dumb down everything?

I hope I don't sound too much like Mary Whitehouse here as I used to loathe her attempts at censorship, but maybe things have swung too far the other way?

Kev

A good post Kevin and one with which I largely agree, especially the reference to Mary Whitehouse ;)

As one of the older posters on these boards, maybe I'm programmed to be appalled by this incident. But, I actually often listen to Russell Brand on a Saturday evening and find him whimsical and amusing and think Jonathan Ross can also be very entertaining too, so I guess I'm a bit more liberal than many of my contemporaries. However, making lewd and obscene phone calls to a 78-year-old man who had not provoked them in any way, was just totally out of order and definitely not funny.

I do think the coverage of the event has bordered on the hysterical, but if it pushes back those boundaries a bit, then maybe it's not such a bad thing.

Hey Karla - I am at Wilderness Lodge too from 9th to 16th Dec!! :santa:

Did this happen before or after the BBC hired him? It seems, regardless, that they knew what he was like when they hired him. If this incident happened since the hiring, surely they could have given him a firm warning at that time?

(Am I hijacking my own thread here? :lmao: Don't mean to, but want to respond to some of the replies.)

I don't think Claire--or anyone here--was saying they use the f-word in their house or think it's an appropriate part of anyone's vocabulary, just that in our society, it hasn't become as shocking as it would have been even a decade ago. It's a regrettable fact. How often on message boards do we see "***"? Much too often, but it's out there.

I really have always found the Ricky Gervais podcasts side-splittingly funny, but am annoyed at how very often the f-word and crude language is used in it. (And, if he's such great friends with Ross, I'm surprised he hasn't spoken out in his defense.)

I usually have to turn off the Graham Norton show when it's on because, as I think I mentioned, he frequently makes humiliating calls to innocent people and can really go over-the-top with sexual comments. I've never heard any Big News about outrage at his antics, so have been baffled that Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross received such wrath. Again, not defending what they did, but just amazed at the level of reaction. And, I must be missing something over here because I've never heard Jonathan Ross swear or use the f-word in any of his podcasts or Friday Night clips I've seen. Russell Brand is a whole other matter.

It's interesting to read the varying viewpoints here...thanks for your input!

Caveat: I'm in the U.S. and primarily know of Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross through listening to their podcasts--esp. Ross', which I really enjoy--and seeing youtube clips of Ross' Friday Night show (again, find it fun and interesting) and seeing some Russell Brand clips on youtube. I'm much more undecided on Brand since he can, at times, be smartly, hysterically funny and other times, just much too crude/profane.
I was following on the UK news as this whole controversy unfolded. I completely agree that they were out of line with their immature prank, but I do wonder that someone at the BBC didn't stop it from airing. What puzzles me is

1. Why it seems that the massive outrage came days after the event
2. Given other questionable things I've heard/seen on the BBC or BBCAmerica, it doesn't seem that this was so much worse than many of Graham Norton's rude phone calls, etc., yet there's clearly more outrage over Brand/Ross
3. Andrew Sachs' granddaughter, if I've got this right, is an exotic dancer with a group called the Satanic Sluts and has photos on her myspace page that match the description. I don't understand the insistence that the incident would mar her reputation.

Not trying to stir the pot, I'm just trying to understand how this became such a phenomenon.

Karla B.

My own views,

Yes they did go over the mark and some action needed to be taken, but this situation was blown totally out of proportion by our tabloid press.

You make a good first point, the outrage came long after event caused by a national newspaper, repeating it over and over again, this paper has a well known anti BBC agenda.
2 complaints on the night, the audience for that show was very low, but the complaints came in from people 'reading' what they said and not from the people who actually read it.

A well known PR rep on TV acting for Andrew Sachs' granddaughter actually put his finger on it saying a lot was 'Salary envy' and an BBC Bash.

Figures get reported for Jonathan Ross's salary, the BBC cannot comment on this subject, but actually the figures quoted in the papers cover the whole contract, for three shows, the chat show, a Film review show and the radio show the production staff ( some 30 odd) and also extra appearances, no tabloid paper reports the truth on this, the quality press do.

Andrew Sachs' granddaughter has sold her story to news papers and they are more intimate in detail than the calls, Andrew Sachs' actually has been very good not saying too much, not reporting it to the press understanding comic performances go wrong, and can make people upset, IE Spanish waiters were upset in the past re a comedy performance.

2. Your point 2, it was worse than the normal BBC TV and Radio broadcasts and did go over the mark, Norton etc do go close but not that far, as a pre recorded show it should have been stooped and edited, but only 2 others were involved in the show, I understand an engineer and a 25yo producer, and they wouldn't be able to control these personalities.

Hence the victims of this situation the controller of Radio 2, as the systems as I understand were not in place, but she should never ever have gone, because of a Tabloid press campaign that was more against the BBC than the actual event. Salary envy as said against Ross, albeit a bit misquoted.

The press will again run more stories on Sunday.

On point three it will now help her get noticed for her 15 mins of fame like David Beckams so called relationship with.....Well I forgot its after 15 Mins isn't it.

So the summary who gets hurt,

Brand, no he quite will get work, its his style will get another job

Ross, damaged badly now every move is in the papers, his large Halloween party all over the papers today, and whilst his production company is paid ig £'s this is now press intrusion on a big scale and he will have difficulty coming back to any UK TV.

The amount he is paid will reduce whoever he works for in the future as the press if he keeps this deal will be again an open opportunity to BBC bash.

The BBC is again damaged for under reaction first few days then over reaction and MP's jumping on the bandwagon ( a week later) to widen the scope to license fee issues etc to take our minds off the mess on the Economy.

I feel very sorry for Lesley Douglas the great controller of R2, I am sure the tabloid press are very pleased they caused a good person to loose her job!?

Terry Wogan said it all the big damage could be to BBC Children in need in a week or so, this could damage that out of the BBC's reputation.

I rarely buy newspapers at the tabloid end, two have now been canceled form reading!.

My actions,

Brand should have been sacked before he quit it was his show, Ross yes suspended but for a shorter time, Lesley Douglas resignation should have not been accepted, but she will be snaped up by a commercial broadcaster now,

These are my personal views and seem to go again what the 'press' says we all think.

I agree with you, I was away for this story but I've caught up with it very quickly (haven't had much choice, really).

The Johnathan Ross suspension confuses me, clearly the BBC are scared of loosing him, if they had real guts they would have sacked both of them. Suspension????? what is this, school ??? Out of both "performers" JR is the more senior at the beeb and should have seen this coming when the sketch was initially performed and reeled it in a bit.....
JR fills a massive gap that the BBC doesn't really know what else to do with, I like him, many of my 30 something and 40 something friends like him. Many in this great land feel that as they pay license fee they have the right to demand dodgy sitcoms and period dramas. I know it's the same 'ole argument but the beeb has to learn from this that they need more than JR to appeal to me. I'm a fan of a the BBC in general and love a beeb period drama, but the beeb needs to moderise too.

As for Gordon and Parliament getting involved - good day to bury bad news????

What is so funny about bragging that you ****** someone's granddaughter?

As far as I'm concerned Ross should be fired. He's 48 years old. He acts like a a puerile teenager who doesn't deserve £6 million a year.

Will someone PLEASE take the telentless fame seeking git off the air for good.

I just don't get him at all, my teenage sons just dont get him at all, my mother doesn't get him at all..................so why is this prat earning more money than me for talking utter gibberish to the nation.

Oh and I think Jonathon Ross is brilliant. I have loved his radio 2 show for years. He does get near the knuckle at times and also a lot of his humour relates to onanism but hey, they man is witty and has a way of getting a lot of his guests to drop the force fields.
