Cruising to Mexico, Disney Style: Sept. 25 - Oct. 2, 2011 - ~*~UPDATED 10/30!~*~

Love the TR so far - also can't wait to see what Mickey did...

Can you tell me about your fridge that isn't a fridge? Did you just bring on board a cooler? Trying to figure out what we can bring.

I'm baaaaaack! Definitely jetlagged, but you can expect a TR update from me sometime today. :) Thanks everyone for reading along!

Thank you for this!! I collect Starbucks mugs from all over. Did you notice if they had PV mugs???

You know, I remember seeing that they did have a shelf of mugs like most Starbucks kiosks, but I didn't see if they specifically said PV. Maybe you can call Starbucks corporate and ask if they carry them?

Great trip report I hope November comes fast enough for you so you hear if you passed. Good luck to you.

Thank you! :flower3:

We are going 12/18 and I can hardly wait!

You are going to have such a wonderful time! :yay:

Christy-
The peach Bellini sounds yummy. I cannot wait to have mine next month. Congratulations on our winnings! I appreciate your PV tips!

They were SO good. I would have asked for more but then I would have been way too tipsy for that early in the day.

Can you tell me about your fridge that isn't a fridge? Did you just bring on board a cooler? Trying to figure out what we can bring.

Think of it as a mini-fridge sized cooler. Just as long as you keep ice in there, everything stays very cold. We kept milk, Red Bull, soda, and desserts in there without any problems, and our stateroom hostess was very good about replacing the ice twice a day (we never even asked her to do it). I don't think you'd need to bring a separate cooler unless you require a lot of room to chill something.

can't wait to hear more!! i'm going on my first disney cruise on 11/13 with my hubby and 2 daughters (ages 2 & 4), and can't wait!!! thanks so much for sharing your adventures!!

Christy I love the tone of your TR! So much fun and informative! You guys MADE OUT :thumbsup2 in the prize department! And whatever you got from Mickey I'm sure was because all of the :goodvibes you two have. My family and I leave on the Wonder in 6 days!:banana::banana: I CAN NOT WAIT! :yay::woohoo::cheer2: Looking forward to your next post! :worship:

Heeellllooo where are you??

We're waiting to hear! :rolleyes1

Dying to hear what it is!

Hey everyone! Sorry for the delay in getting this posted. I flew out to NY this past weekend for a girlfriend’s wedding and am still super tired (read: open bar + jetlag). I had planned to finish writing this yesterday…but then I realized I left my wallet on the plane and had to go back to SFO (which is not actually in SF) to pick it up. Thank goodness the fine folks at Virgin America found it and held it for me in their safe. Anyway, here’s the next installment of my trip report!

Our first day in Cabo! The night before, BFF & I made the decision that since we’d be in Cabo for two days, we’d use this day as our day to stay onboard and explore the ship. We figured that more folks would be out in Cabo on the first day (as opposed to the second day), so we’d enjoy the empty ship and just explore Cabo on the second day in port.

One of the big things on the to-do list for the week was to get up early and watch the sunrise. Since this was going to be our “lazy day” on the empty ship, we decided we’d get up super early to see the sunrise, and then go back to sleep in. If you have time to do this while you’re on the ship, I highly recommend it. The navigators always print the approximate time for Sunrise, so it’s easy to plan for. We set our alarms for 7am (ten minutes before sunrise), and when we got up, we sat in the chairs at Beach Blanket Buffet on Deck 9 Aft. We were far enough from Cabo (and any other land) that it looked like the sun was coming right out of the ocean. Absolutely beautiful.

47Sunrise1.jpg

48Sunrise2.jpg

We hung out for a while as the sun was rising, and were just looking out into the sea, enjoying the view and the peaceful sound of the ocean. All of a sudden, I saw a “plop” in the ocean near the wake of our ship. I was puzzled for a second, as it was early, so my brain wasn’t functioning correctly. I literally thought, “What just fell into the ocean?!” But then I saw it again, and I realized…DOLPHINS! More and more plops = a whole pod of dolphins jumping in the water! It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get any pictures of the dolphins. Captain Thord was hauling butt to Cabo, so our ship was moving way too fast for the dolphins, and by the time I had my camera out again they were too small to pick up on my little point-and-shoot. I guess I’ll just have to keep my memories forever.

After the dolphins were long behind us and the sun was starting to make things really warm, we went back to our stateroom and knocked out until our room service woke us up.

The night before, we’d ordered room service for breakfast by filling out the little door-hanger card & placing it on our doorknob. I should tell you now that over the course of the week, we ordered a lot of room service. It kind of got out of hand. It’s just so much fun to order room service! We tipped well every time, of course, especially since it was the same guy delivering our food every time (what up, Ricky from the Philippines!). I ordered the coffee once and it wasn’t that great (yes I am a coffee snob; unfortunate reality of living in SF). Fortunately, I had read that here on the Dis prior to our cruise, so I brought Starbucks Via as a backup plan (yes I also think Via is substandard, but I think it’s much better than any other instant coffee options. End of snobbery). Thereafter, instead of ordering coffee in the mornings I’d order milk and tea, which was delivered as a carton of milk, a carafe of hot water & a selection of teabags, & I just left the teabags alone. BFF ordered the steak sandwich once and the wings another time and enjoyed both. I ordered a pepperoni pizza and it was decent (way better than the pizza from Pinocchio’s). Breakfast food is limited to pastries, breads and cereal. We also ordered a pitcher of ice water pretty regularly, which was a nice thing to have in the room.

TIP: Bring plenty of $1 bills and keep some in one of the desk drawers. That way when room service knocks on the door, you can just grab some to tip the server.

After breakfast & getting ready for the day, we headed out into the HOT sunshine of Cabo San Lucas. Our ship was already anchored in the bay by the time we woke up, so I snapped some pictures of Cabo.

50Cabo.jpg

The thing about staying on the ship when the ship’s in port is that there aren’t many activities scheduled in the navigator (makes sense, as most people are out on excursions and exploring the port). So, we spent the day wandering around, making sure that we saw every aspect of the ship that we could. We checked out Route 66 (as we hadn’t really gone there during the day; only at night) and played chess for a bit in Diversions.

51Route66.jpg

We sat out on Deck 10 for a while before it got waaaaaayy too hot (seriously, later in the day Goran told us it had reached 112 degrees). We had lunch at Beach Blanket Buffet (ribs were delish, shrimp was overcooked) and discovered the key to deciphering which desserts to choose: if it is cake or mousse cut into a neat little square, it is probably bland & you should pick something else!

52BBB.jpg

Then we did something really boring: BFF took a nap & I did a load of laundry. Don’t judge me! There are a million funner things we could have been doing, I know, but napping in an air conditioned room on a hot day is awesome and there was no one in the laundry room.

After I finished my laundry, we went back down to the Promenade Lounge, which was the location of most of the trivia games we played. When we got there, people groaned. :lmao: We played another round of trivia….

53PromenadeTrivia.jpg

Yep...we won water bottles this time!

After staying and chatting with some of our trivia friends for a while, we went back up to our stateroom to get ready for Pirate Night! I knew that a lot of people went all out for Pirate Night, but to be honest I wasn’t willing to shell out some dough (and add even more to my luggage) for a pirate costume. So, the extent of our costumes were eye patches, gold hoop earrings, and stick-on mustaches. It was really fun to see folks dressed up though, and I think the next time I cruise I’ll dress up a bit more. While walking through the lobby atrium we ran into this codfish:

54CaptHook.jpg

He was a fan of the mustaches.

We also saw Peter Pan & Stitch hanging out in the lobby!

55PeterStitch.jpg

Finally, we made it over to the Walt Disney Theatre for our screening of...

56LK.jpg

Lion King 3D!

I was so happy we got a chance to see this, as I hadn’t had time to see it in the theaters. I’m actually not a fan of 3D; usually I find it way too gimmicky and sometimes it gives me a headache. However, I thought they did a great job with the 3D aspects for Lion King. The wildebeest scene was really well done, and yes I did cry when Mufasa died (like I always do). The theater was only about 2/3 full, and I’m assuming that’s because lots of people were still out in Cabo. I can only imagine how crowded the later screening was.

After the movie, we started making our way Aft, as tonight’s dinner was in Animator’s Palate. On our way there, we ran into these two:

57PirateMM.jpg

Even Wench Minnie is adorable.

We made a quick stop in our stateroom to grab a couple things and saw this little guy hanging around:

58TowelMonkey.jpg

Gold coins for eyes! Adorable!

As I mentioned before, dinner was in AP tonight, with all restaurants having the same “Pirates IN the Caribbean” menu (which, you know, didn’t really apply to us, as we weren’t IN the Caribbean, but whatevs, we went with it).

59Menu.jpg

For appetizers, we ordered the “Pearls of the Caribbean” and “Black Beard’s Jumbo Crab Cake.” The crab cake was so delish that I had already finished it before it occurred to me that I should have taken a picture (seriously, I ate every single bite, even all of the coleslaw). The Pearls were just meh. I also ordered the conch chowder, and unfortunately I didn’t think that was anything special either.

60PirateApps.jpg

Pearls of the Caribbean & Conch chowder.

For entrees, I ordered the Dijon-crusted Sirloin of Beef & BFF ordered the Treasure-of-the-Seas Grilled Shrimp & Seared Scallops. My sirloin was decent, but I had one bite of BFF’s dish & I had to switch. The tomato cream sauce on that pasta was absolutely DIVINE. As soon as Goran brought my pasta, Julia appeared out of nowhere and offered to remove my shrimp from their shells, because according to her, “when you’re on vacation you don’t do any work.” WOW! Talk about full service!

61Entrees.jpg

Clockwise from top left: Dijon-crusted Sirloin of Beef, Treasure-of-the-Seas Grilled Shrimp & Seared Scallops, Julia removing my shrimp from their shells.

For dessert, none of the four of us could decide what we wanted from the menu. We told Goran to just bring us whatever he thought was good. He told us that he’d bring us something that he’d recently had from the No Sugar Added menu. He brought us the Banana-Chocolate Crepe and it was excellent! Plenty of sweetness from the banana.

62Dessert.jpg

If you want something that isn’t overly sweet, definitely order this.

After dessert, there was a little dance party that happened in the restaurant. A poppy dance remix of “A Pirate’s Life For Me” echoed throughout AP, servers danced around in a conga line of sorts and pulled guests up to dance with them. I think there was a limbo pole involved, so I sat this one out. But the kids looked like they were having plenty of fun :)

63AnilFlags.jpg

Our head server, Anil, with the party flags.

After the dance party, we took the time to take pictures with our servers in their pirate costumes:

64Anil.jpg

Anil, our lovely head server. He came by every single night to check in on us and make sure we were having a good time.

65Goran.jpg

Goran, our server. So much fun! BFF & I still say some catch phrases of his to each other.

66Julia.jpg

Julia, our assistant server. She was so sweet and really took care of us. Right before Goran snapped this shot, Julia stuck her hand out and yelled, “Sexy poses!” which is why BFF & I are both laughing.

With dinner done, we headed up to Deck 10 for the Pirate Party. I’ll be completely frank with you: other than the fireworks, I was bored. I mean, the performers were great (Minnie was dancing something FIERCE) but after a song or two I wasn’t even paying attention anymore. I was paying attention to things like this: “Hey dude, now that you’ve pushed your way through and are standing in front of me, I can’t see & that’s kinda rude,” “Hey lady, don’t you think it’s ironic that you’re standing your child on a railing right next to a sign that says ‘please do not stand on this railing’?” etc. I think for what the party was (just the characters performing and dancing to different pop songs) it was way too long.

67PirateParty.jpg

One thing that was pretty awesome, though, was Mickey ziplining between the funnels and starting the fireworks. Only Disney could (and does!) pull off something like that.

68MickeyZipline.jpg

69Fireworks.jpg

After the fireworks, there was an ENORMOUS buffet spread. It looked pretty impressive! But, we’d just had dinner, so we skipped it and went back down to our stateroom (boring, I know). With our day out in Cabo ahead, we took the opportunity to sleep early.

Coming up...a beach in Cabo to ourselves, & you’ll finally find out what Mickey wanted our stateroom number for!

Thank you! Since your cruise is in December, sunrise will be a little bit later so hopefully you can catch it ;) Room service is SO much fun. Even if you're just ordering Mickey bars at night!

Thanks! Usually I wouldn't be too happy getting up that early either, but this time it was worth it. Plus right afterwards, we went straight back to sleep until 11am. :rotfl:

Thank you so much! I haven't quite passed just yet (results come out next month) so this was just a celebration of actually taking the bar. Hopefully I'll have good news to share come November 18th! The DIS is the best for learning anything and everything about cruising with DCL, so you're in the right place. If you have any questions, definitely feel free to ask me! :thumbsup2

Loving your report!! We sail in January. Can't wait to see what you did your 2nd day in Cabo!

Thank you! I'm working on the next installment today so it should be up this evening or sometime tomorrow. :cutie:

First: GREAT trip report! :thumbsup2
Second: I'M DYING from the suspense!:rotfl: Tell us already! lol

I have some not so great news. Today, as I was working on the photos for my update, my laptop froze up. When I restarted it, it went to a black screen that said "no bootable disk." I have no idea what that means, so I'm going to take it to a computer repair place tomorrow and hope for the best. Thankfully, everything important is backed up on an external hard drive, including my pictures.. In the meantime though, this means I don't know when my next update will be. :( please think good thoughts for my computer, as I definitely cannot afford a new one.

(I am posting from my phone, in case you're wondering)

I think I would have a heart attack without my Macbook :scared1:

I can't even bear to think of it :headache:
