We were there in the last year from Sept 27-Oct 3 and the crowds were very manageable. There were times when it seemed crowded but that was only when everyone was congregating in the same area for something like Fantasmic or park closing when you are all trying to get out at the same time... like the end of Illuminations.
When we made our plans for this year I wanted to go in Oct as well. We wanted to be there for the Wine and Food Festival at Epot. Unfortunatly the National Guard had other plans and we are leaving this Tuesday! I'm excited because I wanted to go sometime to the Flower and Garden event at Epcot it will just be sooner than later.
The crowds are longest for the newest rides, so go to those rides first thing in the morning. Another tactic to use is go to the back of the park and work your way towards the gate. At times you'll notice how the lines are NOT that long when you notice how many lanes are closed off in the cattle gates.
