Typically how are the crowds for Memorial day weekend and the week following the holiday? Trying to decide if we should go that week or the following week, June 3.

I am having this struggle too! I wasn't sure when to go, and I have flexible dates all of May and all of June.

We're a little flexible. We're DVC members and there is availability the week of Memorial Day and we can book June 3 starting tomorrow. Trying to do mid-week since the weekends are more points!

Memorial Day weekend has lately been the kick-off to the summer season in the parks. So, I would anticipate good sized crowds on the actual holiday weekend (Fri-Mon), especially if they open or debut something new that weekend. The weekdays (Tue to Thu) would probably be okay (relatively speaking). Just note that there aren't that many days when the parks are "empty" anymore (i.e., attractions are walk-on or near walk-on), so it's best to go expecting at least a moderate level of crowds, even on weekdays.

(Side note: There are a number of Grad Nights slated for that week - May 29 & 30, Jun 1 & 2 - which might increase crowds depending on when the various school groups begin to arrive and which ticket tier they purchased.)

My friend was there last Memorial Day and said that -- other than the brand-new Guardians of the Galaxy ride -- everything was surprisingly lighter that day than she thought it would be. SoCal APs are blocked put that weekend and Memorial Day.

Yeah, my niece went that weekend and we were all telling her it was going to be crazy. But she went and said it was not bad at all. But perhaps it was lighter than usual because everyone thought it would be crazy because of GOG opening, so some decided not to go.

Well, we ended up booking our Grand Californian villa for the week of Memorial Day. When we logged in this morning to book June 3, we must have missed it by seconds and Sunday-Tuesday were already taken!

We were there last year on the Sunday. Crowds were very light. Best day we've spent at Disneyland in years. Reports showed the same was true for Saturday. That Monday the parks were slammed. Deluxe APs (and lower) were blocked both the Saturday and Sunday, but all passes were open that Monday. Blockout days make a big difference. We were only there because it was the day we started our APs and they'll let you use them on a blockout day.

We went the days prior to Memorial Day weekend this year (Mon-Thurs plus the Fri GOTG party night). In Jan 2017, they announced a special SoCal 3-day pass for $149 that you could use anytime from Jan 9-May 25th (didn't have to be consecutive days). Seemed like everyone used their last day that week. Heard lots of people mention that's why they were there during our trip.
If they do that again this year, it might be a factor for crowds around the same time?
