Crowds - before or after veteran's day?

When are the crowds better in November, before veteran's day or after? We have gone twice before/during veteran's day and love the low crowds... but in reading reports, it almost seems as though right after veteran's day but before thanksgiving seems to be great too! Would love any experiences.

Well, the question is whether or not you want to see the holiday decorations. This year, "Christmas" started on Nov. 12th I believe, so obviously after Veteran's day. I think that time immediately before Veteran's day is pretty dead. I went during the week on Tuesday the 9th last year and Wednesday Nov. 3rd this year and walked on to almost everything. Veteran's Day weekend was very, very busy this year, so I'm assuming when you say "after Veteran's Day" you just mean in general, and not the days immediately following. If you come too close before Veteran's Day (or more specifically the start of the holiday season at Disneyland), you run the risk of Haunted Mansion and Small World being down to get their holiday overlays.

Well, Haunted Mansion overlay begins at the end of September, so that isn't my concern... We have done the time before, and some decorating is up, esp New Orleans square.

I do mean in general, and by after, we are probably talking probably the 14th-21st ish compared to sometime between Nov 1-9.

The week after Veteran's Day was really great with hardly any waits for rides. We went on November 16, 18, and 19, and thought that the crowds were manageable. I would suggest going on a Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday, and doing a Friday to get a weekend day that has longer hours and more shows/parades. The week we went the park closed early from Monday-Thursday, but the Christmas fireworks were on every night.

WHat everyone said is exactly what happened.

Things were great before veterans day.

Nov 12th was insane but IASW Holidays was awesome!!!!

the weekdays after were calm...

It seems that Thanksgiving day was tolerable but that today was very busy :-)

We were there 10/30 - 11/9 and obviously Halloween was crazy, but after that it was fine. We did use FPs a lot, but the waits were fine. Thankfully, we were there when it was in the 90's, so one of the benefits was we got several days of pool weather, which you won't theoretically get in late Nov.

Clarification on a couple of things:

New Orleans Square's holiday decor has been cut in half this year. It's not what it was. It's a shadow of its former self!!

Haunted Mansion Holiday actually began on 9/17 this year, which is when the Halloween season began, so not quite the end of September. Sometimes the season starts on the next to last Friday in September. Sometimes it starts on the last Friday in September. There is no telling what will happen in 2011, but I think it will be a later start.

I think what sonnyjane was trying to ask is how important is it (or isn't it) to be there for the holiday season. Not just "decorations." Sure, there are Christmas decorations that start to go up in early in November - logistically, they have to go up early because there are too many things to put up that they can't wait until right before the holiday season begins to do it. But, although decorations begin to appear before Halloween Time ends, the holiday season offers many other things that will not be available before Veterans Day (i.e., IASW Holiday, snow on Main Street, the Winter Castle lighting, the holiday parade and fireworks, Santa, the Reindeer Round-Up, Christmas carolers, special holiday food, etc.). Are any of those things important to you or your family? If so, make sure to go to DLR when the season actually begins. If you don't care about any of that stuff, go before Veterans Day, after Halloween. It won't be as crowded yet. Once the season actually begins, it will be more crowded. I was there on 11/13 this year and it was very, very crowded.

Here is the thing that may throw things off in 2011, schedule-wise - Veterans Day will be on Friday, November 11. Given the pattern of the last 2 holiday seasons at Disneyland, that would be the day that they would also presumably begin the Christmas festivities - two Fridays before Thanskgiving. That has not always been when they've started the season - sometimes it has begun only one Friday before Thanskgiving. Like Halloween Time, the holiday season start and end dates change.

BUT, I have a sneaking suspicion that the holiday season may, possibly begin later in 2011. I am thinking they may not start it ON Veterans Day, for two reasons. For one thing, to start it ON another holiday like that one will actually detract from honoring the Vets and seem to make Veterans Day a lesser priority. Second, I have a feeling that Halloween Time may start and end later in 2011. Halloween itself will be on a Monday. Disneyland usually ends Halloween Time, the season, on the Sunday after Halloween, or on Halloween if Halloween falls on Sunday. In this case, the Sunday after Halloween will be on the following weekend (and that would be 11/7)...which would delay the start of the holiday/Christmas season to after Veterans Day, I'm sure - probably beginning on 11/18. I don't know for sure that DLR will extend Halloween Time through 11/7, but their seasons always seem to end on Sundays, not on weekdays.

So I guess what I'm saying is, if my hunch is correct and the holiday season begins later in 2011, you may have until just before 11/18 with lower crowds, if you don't care about being there for the Christmas season.

Realistically, we have a traveler with us who is in remission and immunity is an issue with large crowds. Which is why my concern is not really about the holiday stuff but about crowds. The less, the better. Unfortunately, I can't wait on holiday date releases to book since we are VGC owners.

Thank you all for the information. It seems as though we will probably be okay with either one since both are low times...

Okay, so since the holiday season is not important and the main point is to avoid huge crowds, I think going before Veterans Day would be better. Going later than that, especially before Thanksgiving (when it's been reported to be very crowded) would be too risky. Whether the holiday season begins on Veterans Day - 11/11 - next year, or whether it begins on 11/18, the parks get more crowded after the start date. On 11/13 this year, I was shocked at how crowded it was. It may as well have been a day in mid-December.

So I vote for before - in between Halloween Time and Veterans Day.

Veterans Day was pretty crazy we were there that day then the weekend as well which was busy i would say before or the week after we were there thursday 11/18 and most things were 10mins or less wait time
