We just got back last night, and I'd like to preface this report by saying our definition of crowded is not equal to others. We love WDW so much, BUT we really prefer places with hardly any people, so it really makes no sense why we keep going back. 4th trip in 4 years, and after this one, I've decided we either figure out new things to do at WDW off the beaten path, or take a couple of years off. All that will be explained later....so don't hate me just yet.
Saturday 21st: We arrived at AKL in a stretch Navigator limo, after being upgraded by Happy Limo (awesome start to our week). Four people in front of us at check in (3:30pm), and we only waited about 8 minutes. The CM was less than enthusiastic, but I kept a smile on my face, cuz hey, I'm on vacation, and she was obviously NOT. Anyway, we were assigned a standard room on the 5th floor, facing the parking lot (first time to not be upgraded, but still, a smile on my face. I got what I paid for -$109 w/AP). The view was basically a huge tree, so we weren't staring at anything unsightly. We unpacked and headed down to BOMA for dinner ($70 but delicious). Very crowded, but it usually is on the weekends. DD and I decided to spend the evening at the pool & hot tub, and I (mom) started the vacation with a most delicious Margarita. Again, hot tub very crowded. I could feel myself stressing out and we had only been here for a few hours. Screaming babies, strollers, dodging someone every 5 ft as you walk through the lobby...ok keep calm, it's the weekend. I picked this time as it was supposed to be slow, but no one made me arrive on a weekend. Afterwards we shopped at Zahanati, stocked up the fridge, sat by the firepit for awhile and then headed to bed. Tomorrow will be better.
Sunday, 22nd: TGM said Sunday would be good to go to Epcot. Unfortunately, could not get everyone to leave early, so we ended up arriving at around 9:45. Dd wanted to try Soarin', and we knew we needed a fastpass, so we headed to that building. OMG!! It was like the mall on Christmas eve....just walking around to get down to the right level was a struggle. Be patient, it's your fault for getting here late....and here's where it gets fun, and where my NANNY 911 beacon started to go off - while standing in line with my very well behaved 9 yr Dd, we had the pleasure of watching little "Eric", around 4 yrs old, who didn't get the cookie he wanted, proceed to throw himself down in the middle of a crowd of 100's of people, and scream louder than a yeti for over 10 minutes. Everyone was trying to move around, to somehow escape this shrill shriek, while his all knowing mother just stood there ignoring it... and finally, with evil visions of how I was going to stop this brat :stir: I started to head towards them. My Dd said "Mom look, it's time for our fastpass - don't do it, mom, just don't". So, we headed in and thoroughly enjoyed Soarin'. I totally forgot about the ignorant people that can't control thier children and seem to feel others should share in their pain when their kids explode. (ok, I feel better). We met back up with DH, did some serious shopping at MouseGear, and headed towards Mexico for lunch. We were seated at 11:15, with no wait and no reservations. Nice & quiet. The countries were not crowded at all, and the weather was wonderful. Since we knew we wanted to see Illuminations that night, we made sure we left by 2:30 so we could go back to the hotel and rest. We had the whole bus to ourselves, :thumbsup2 , and did some swimming, napping, chocolate moussing, etc. in preparation for our evening. A CM at the lodge said they were expecting 600 people to check out of the lodge on Monday! Next.....Disney magic at Le Cellier dinner..

A CM at the lodge said they were expecting 600 people to check out of the lodge on Monday!

Yay! We are checking into AKL this Monday (in 2 days!!) so I hope that's the case this week too :)

We loved Soaring .......we had the great opprotunity to go there when it was just a soft opening and went five times in the same day......we knew it would be an outstanding ride...
Thanks so much for your report....

Sunday 22nd evening - We boarded the bus to Epcot at 5pm for our Le Cellier ADR and were seated quickly. CM was nice but hurried, and although this was our first time at LC and my DH's most anticipated meal, we enjoyed it the least. The food was good, but the 35 minute wait for our meal after ordering was ridiculous. Here's the pixie dust part - I had brought a Disney rewards card and used it for most of the bill, and put cash with it to make up the difference and tip. When the waitress brought back the receipt for signature, it said I still owed $20 and that only 27 was applied to my rewards card..I was furious at my disney card, and assumed it was a mistake on their part and not the waitress, so I paid another $28 and left, but was still trying to do the math in my head. As I walked towards England, I realized I had just paid $87 towards a $57 bill..I went back and thought "They are never going to believe me", but the manager was there and said they realized there was something wrong as soon as I left, and they brought out my $$ exactly they way I had paid for it, and we settled it no problem. I thanked her profusely for such wonderful customer service, and she said "we apologize for the error, you should not have to worry about such things while on vacation". OMG! No place else but WDW. Got some champagne in Italy, and around 8 the crowds really started to pick up, so we headed towards the entrance to watch Illum., then made a speedy getaway before the buses got crazy. Blisters starting to form on all feet involved, so we ran backwards toawrds the entrance, watching the finale in the sky. Bus wasn't too bad, and we decided to head to Victoria Falls bar for a nightcap. Dd had a frozen sour apple slushy, and we had Espresso martinis. :thumbsup2 YUM!! Lobby still busy at 9:30pm, so we headed upstairs. I noticed the night before that my mattress was so thin I could feel the springs just by running my hand lightly over the top, so I called housekeeping and requested either a new mattress, or a foam mattress pad, or a new room. The foam as sent up shortly. Good night's sleep was had by all.

Loving your report so far. What exactly was so disappointing about Le Cellier - was it just the wait? Only asking as I've read a few bad reports lately and it was one we were hoping to try this year.

We don't like the crowds either which is why, I suspect, we've made the wrong decision to go in October this year

We're from TX, so when my husband thinks of a steak dinner, it's a little more substantial than what we got. When I order salmon, I prefer it cooked with a little rosemary and maybe some risotto, but this was "smoked", in other words "raw". (my fault for not knowing the definition I guess)
I think it was just personal preferance, but for the $$, I was not impressed. The wait really got to us, though.

Monday the 23rd - OK, so we get to MGM at around 9:45, and the place is PACKED (imo). Can I just say I hate the freakin' finger thing at the front gate? When did that start? "Just two fingers, ma'am, "I did". "Push them all the way as far as they'll go ma'am". "I did". Every freakin' time! Anyway, fingerprints were made, and the streets were packed, the stores were packed, but - there were no lines for the rides - OK, that's great for DH and Dd, but I'm one of those "once I've rode it, it's time to move on", so the short lines did nothing for me. I wanted to go shopping, eat, maybe people watch, and enjoy the weather. There were quite a few school groups, and I kept thinkin', it's Monday! Where are you people coming from? I watched for 30 minutes while teenager after teenager rang those HTH bells they have on sale. I wondered if the CMs ever felt like saying:THEY ALL SOUND THE SAME, OK? EVERY TIME YOU RING THEM THEY WILL MAKE THE SAME NOISE!! :sad2: Oh well, weekend leftovers, just deal with it. Narnia was ok, but the weirdest thing, (sad really) - instead of a pre-recorded spiel, there was the oldest CM alive in charge of the opening comments, and he seriously was having a hard time making it through the thing....he kept stopping, and repeating himself; and it was really awkward - I felt sorry for him. ANYWAY, back onto the street and I really wanted to try "Who wants to be a $$$". There was no wait, and I really liked it. I could have done it again, but Dd was not impressed. RRC was callin' her name! She rode it with Daddy 6 times that day, with no wait. Tower of Terror too. 3pm and I wanted to see the parade, but DD and Dd were tired, so after McD's french fries and Mickey bars, we board the bus. It was packed, and DH stood next to a Mom carrying a little girl with one of those twirly whirly things that light up and spin....well, she proceeded to light it up and spin it smacking my DH right in the face. I put my hand around it to get the Mom's attention, and she didn't look too happy, but hey, neither was DH. Back at the lodge, the crowds had started to go away, and so did my stress. We went down to the bar to have irish coffees, take pics, and enjoy our lodge. I took Dd and had a caricature made, and she loved it! Tomorrow was MK, and Dd and I were opening the park - WOOHOO!

Thanks for posting this our family is going next year at that time- glad to hear it wasn't too awful!

Tuesday - 1/24 MKThis morning my Dd and I were determined to ride Space Mountain with no line, so we dragged ourselves out of bed at 7, grabbed some bacon and cereal, stuffed an apple juice in my purse, and off to the Magic Kingdom. The weather was absolutely beautiful. There were only three people on the bus with us, and we enjoyed the opening ceremony while waiting for the rope to drop. Then we RAN to Space Mountain, and the first car pulled up and we got on by ourselves! AWESOME! So we rode it again, and again just walking on each time. Afterwards, I reached into my purse to get a drink, and realized everything was wet....OMG!!!! the stupid apple juice had spilled..and we all know how wonderful apple juice smells when combined with leather, old pennies and whatever else had been crammed in my purse that week. OK, so I go into the bathroom and empty all contents onto the counter, and a wonderful CM went and got towels for me. She told me to just keep them...once again, only at WDW would that happen. :wizard:
Daddy met up with us a little later, and around 10:40 we watched Cinderellabration, which was wonderful. Still not a huge crowd to worry about. The costumes are beautiful. Now 11am, and we had been up since 7, so we thought we'd get a bite to eat. We walked right up to the Crystal Palace, no reservation, and they said we could be seated in 30 minutes when they opened. (so much for must have ADRs!) After thinking about the fact that this was a character meal, and looking at the strollers forming a pool outside the door, we opted for the Palace Restaurant right next door. It was lovely and bright, and although the food was nothing spectacular, it was a pleasant lunch, maybe 10 people in the whole restaurant. Today MK was absolutely wonderful. You could walk down mainstreet without bumping into and dodging anyone. We enjoyed the mainstreet singers, and absolutely loved Philharmagic. :sunny: There's just something about this park that gets you in the spirit (and makes you want to eat sugar - seriously how many Mickey bars and soft serves can one person eat?). Sounds weird but three days into my vacation, and I finally felt the Disney thing kick in. I think I'll do MK a little closer to the beginning next time. **next- 1st time visiting Polynesian**

As long as you time it after the marathon, MLK day, and the cheerleader convention, you will be great. It's usually beautiful weather each time we go in Jan. Highs in the upper 70's, lows can get in the lower 40's late at night, but really nice. Bring sweaters and tank tops, just to be prepared for both.

what are the "usual" dates for the cheerleader convention?
