Cross stitching from a photograph!

I have been cross stitching for more years than i can remember but have never done one from an original photo. Has anyone on the boards made one of these? Six weeks ago my sister had a baby girl and i have bought the kit just waiting for a good picture. How good does the picture have to be and how was the likeness when it was completed?
