My sister and I are going to Disneyworld for the first time with her 15 yr old daughter and a friend. We understand that we will have a "disney charge card" while we are there so we just use this plastic card to get drinks, food, etc. Does anyone know if the teens can also use one of these cards so we can send them off on their own and they can get drinks, icecream, etc... but put a limit on the card so they don't put us in the poorhouse????

THANKS!

There's no 'charge card', it's your room key, with charging an option on it. You can also have your park passes put on it as well.

Are you staying at a Disney hotel? If so, each person will have a room key with charging capabilities. They can use those cards to charge items to the room (all the stores and restaurants take them), but some of the little snack carts don't take them so they should probably have a little cash on them as well.

If I were you I would buy a prepaid visa so they couldn't spend more than I wanted them too.

Is there any way to put a limit on the room key that is available for charging things?

Hi Jenn,

Yes, we are staying at the Animal Kingdom lodge. We want the kids to be able to buy things with their room key, but want to have a limit for them so they can't "accidentally" go over budget. Is that possible? Thanks for the tip about the snack carts - that's good to know!

Unfotunately, there is no way to put a separate limit on some of the cards. You can choose to have charging privledges on certain cards or none at all, no in-between. Each person will have a room key with their name so its easy to see who spent what.

At 15 I might could give it a try for the first day or two and keep close monitoring as well as having the teens keep receipts. This way you can tally up each day and keep track. Be sure that both teens know that you will stop at the front desk and get a total, by card name.

Otherwise you could just give them some cash each day and then meet for meals to be sure they eat well.

Have a great trip.

You can get your account printout from the front desk whenever you need it, so you can keep track that way. Also, they give you a receipt when you use it so you could put the ball in the teen's court and tell them they have to track what they spend and not go over.

My kids are 12, 13 and 15 and understand perfectly well what it means not to go over the limit I give them. We have yet to have any problems. They each have there room keys and are free to charge as they wish. If there is a big purchas they wish to make and have the money to cover it they just need to check with me first.

We've been giving our 12 yr old son charging privileges for several years and he has been very good with it.

But, I think you can get prepaid gift cards that could be used at WDW when you get there. Just don't get the prepaid cards at the Disney Store. Those can only be used at the Disney Store.
