Long time starwood program guest here. I am canceling amex spg after it raised the points (from 4k to 7k) for a few hotels we stay at in Orlando and Tampa.

We travel with cars so we prefer 3.5+ star over proximity to parks.

What will be a good credit card to earn hotel points?

I am watching for your answers. I used to stay at the Tampa Sheraton Suites by the airport for 4k points and your post made me check them! Bang - up to 7K!! I have ton of points and can still stay, but I might just move to a different room downtown or maybe Sand Key, now that I have to pay higher anyway.

But I am considering ditching the card in favor of another chain. I looked briefly at a Marriott rewards card, but haven't checked the options for Orlando/Tampa area.

Have you thought about Hilton HHonors? There are ALOT of Hiltons, DoubleTree, Emabassy Suites, the Waldorf and many of their other lower brands in Orlando.

The Hyatt card gets you 2 free stays the 1st year and 1 free stay every year after for a $75 annual fee. I use my stay at the Hyatt MCO which makes the $75 a bargain.

Cancel your AMEX SPG and get an SPG AMEX Business card. You can use your SSN and call it a sole proprietorship. You get 10k points on first use and an additional 15k bonus if you spend 5k within the first 6 months plus the regular points you get for spend. So you're looking at a minimum of 30k. And then you could use those points to book several nights in Orlando even if they did raise the point redemptions.

The Hilton HHonors Reserve Visa or Amex offers the same--2 free nights 1st year and 1 free night certificate every year on your "anniversary". Also enjoy automatic gold status as a cardmember. We are happy with ours.
