Crapola: I think I killed the washer

So I took the day off work to get stuff done plus I had an appt so I'm doing laundry and next thing I know the washer is smoking and making funny noises. I so wasn't planning on buying a new washer now but it looks like I have no choice.

So all your reviews. Just casually looking before I like the LG front loader but what do you have and what do you like about it.

Thanks for all your help.

I bought the Samsung front loader at the end of the year. Love, love, love it. I had a front loading Maytag years ago and didn't like it much. It smelled yucky after a year or so -- no matter what I did.

I bought both the washer and dryer and pedastals for both. Both are much more efficient than my old machines. Plus, they are a lovely slate blue.

I've been seeing lots of deals lately, I'm sure you'll be able to find a good one at a decent price. If I recall, Sears has a program where they'll beat a competitor's price, too.

To OP when mine did something similar it needed a new belt. Can you get someone to look at it first? I think it cost me less than $75 to get mine fixed by an appliance repair person.

Just a thought. :)

If you are looking for high efficiency I have the Maytag Bravos and like it. It's my first HE so I have nothing to compare it to, but at the time I bought it I believe it had the largest tub you could get. Unlike many other high efficiencies it is a top loader (not front). Makes adding things after the start quick and easy (I've always thought this would be difficult with front loader - how does soapy water not come out if you open midway though?). You don't need those pedestals (which saves $$$). And with kids I like having the opening on the top (where they can't reach opening/crawl in/hang on door etc).

If the washer is less than 15 years old, there is probably plenty of life in it. Every washer my mom has ever owned lived to 20-30 years. Ours recently started smoking and grinding. Called Maytag, they said 1 week for a repair guy, but since it was over 10 years old and no longer under warranty, why not call a local? Then they gave me a few numbers. Called the local folks, they said 2 weeks! Then THEY gave me a few numbers. 3rd call, really nice guy, came the next day. Cost: $100. Time: 1 hour (well, plus the phone calls). The best part? He didn't seem to mind that I was hosting a rather rambunctious playdate while he was working!

Unless you REALLY WANT a new washer, it's so much cheaper just to fix the existing one. And better for the landfills.

Sorry, but at first glance I thought you thread title said "Crayola".

I was a little confused :confused3

But sorry about that!!:headache: :headache:

Hope it works out for you. I have been known to just let it cool down and try again, but never when there was smoke. :rolleyes1 Yikes!

Mine died finally 6 months ago and I got an LG front loader. I really like that it uses less water and lesssoap, but would like to be able to add items later and can't. Not sure that I'd pay a lot more for that feature though. Just my 2 cents.

Good Luck!!

Well after I picked up DS at school we went and looked at a few. After we got home I decided to give it a try just for the heck of it. I left it empty but it seemed to work alright. So today I plan on putting a small load just to see what happens. I think maybe I overfilled it and I caught it pretty quick so maybe I can get another month or two out of it. We're moving in August so if it can hold out I will be thrilled.

Fisher-Paykel.

We replaced our washing machine about 3 years ago, with a Fisher Paykel, top loading, water saver, Energy Star machine.

Our 16 year old dryer is still going strong because this machine spins so fast, the clothes are just damp when they come out. It's got a HUGE drum, and can handle each one of our comforters.
