CRAP! I knew this would happen! Need quick home remedies!!!!

We're heading to Disney on Friday too, and have been taking Airborne since Monday. We'll continue to take it for the rest of the week. Have a magical trip! :santa:

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I've tried a lot of things, but unfortunately the throat is getting worse :scared1::scared1: I might have to run to the doctor tomorrow for some last minute antibiotics

We did 95% of our packing tonight, I'm determined to enjoy my birthday anyway! b:)

Wouldn't hurt to squeeze in that quick trip to the doctor since you're still not feeling well.. Wouldn't want to have to find one down in Florida..

Hope you can get some meds to help.. Have a great trip! :santa:

I used to joke with our kids' dr that every time we planned a trip out of town I was just going to schedule an appointment for the day before because SOMEONE always got sick. It got to the point she would ask upon entering the exam room "where are you going tomorrow". :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Definitely load up on the echinacea and zinc lozenges as much as possible, and throw in a dose or 2 of vitamin C. If you are able to take a lot of echinacea and zinc right at the very first sign that you might be fighting something, then you can often at least lessen the severity and duration of the cold. There have been many times when I've actually been able to ward off a full blown cold entirely. Just take the zinc on a full stomach, and continue to take both throughout the course of the day (every 3 hours or so for the echinacea, and you can suck on zinc lozenges all day long). I always stock up on lots of both at this time of year so I have enough on hand (I get it pretty inexpensively at seacoastvitamins.com).

I have upped the echinacea and vitamin C, along with white pomegranite tea with honey. I can't handle zinc at all, makes me sick to my stomach. Along with tylenol and sudafed I'm feeling pretty good today :thumbsup2

Large quantities of vitamin D. They are starting to find that it's even better than C at fighting viruses. :thumbsup2 I have a dud of an immune system and when I get a cold I load up on the D and it goes away pretty fast.

Use a neti pot. It clears out all that mucus and reduces post nasal drip. I don't know if it makes a cold go away faster but it does make you feel better.

Not to be preachy but if you have a cold (i.e. a virus) antibiotics aren't going to do anything for you. Now if you have strep that is a different story.

Another vote for Zicam. I use the nose swabs, and I haven't ever gotten sick when I have acted early using this. But I can't be sure that I was or wasn't going to actually be sick, either.:confused3

I have also read that large doses of vitamin D3 is useful against swine flu. Couldn't hurt.

We leave Sat and we've been upping the supplements for 2wks now. As soon as I start to have a sore throat or feel like I'm coming down with something I increase my vit D tablets, take Emergen-C vit C packets~2-3 a day and put a couple of drops of hydrogen peroxide in each of my ears. It stops it in it's tracks. The cold-eze are great because it's a concentrated dose of zinc right in the throat, where you need it. I also will take zinc supplements. Antibiotics wont help with a virus, only for a bacterial infection, a lot of times you get a sore throat due to post-nasal drip which can also upset your stomach. I have all these things packed in case we come down with something next week!

Check this out:

I get this health magazine and the editor does this regemin when he feels something coming on. He claims he hasn't had anything serious since 1989:

Cimetidine (800 mg) - This is sold over the counter for heartburn but its beneficial side effect is to boost immune funciton by reducing T-suppressor cells.

High-Allicin Garlic - 9000 mg twice day.

DHEA - 200-400 mg early in the day.

Lactoferrin - 1200 mg a day.

Zinc Lozenges of two 24 mg every two waking hours.

Melatonin at bedtime in the high dose of 10-50 mg.

Aged garlic extract - 3600 mg a day.

This is in addition to his regular routine (which includes a good bit of Vitamin D3)

I've been gargling with the peroxide, never thought to put it in my ears. How often do you do that?

Vitamin C
Rock and Rye liqueur mixed in hot tea (yummy and knocks colds out!)

Well I certainly have quite a shopping list for when I get back! Thanks for all the suggestions :)

I do the peroxide in my ears thing twice a day, the very first day I feel a scratchy throat or feel a cold coming on. I just use a qtip saturated with peroxide so like a couple drops plop off (until I get a dropper) into my ear. You'll feel fizzing/bubbling and when that stops I drain it out and then do the other ear. I have done this with my 8yr old the minute he says he doesn't feel well/has a sore throat etc and I swear it works. One time he woke up sick, I did this and by afternoon he was fine. From what I've read you have to do it the instant you feel ill, if you wait a day or two the cold has already set in you will probably have to wait the 7-10 days for the cold to clear up. A Doctor in the 1920's thought that the cold and flu virus enter the body through the ear canal and not through the nose or mouth. I don't know, every time I use it it works.

I forgot to add I stop dairy, sugar and wheat the minute I feel sick, they all increase mucus production.

Um, I have to question the safety of that large of a dose of DHEA. I have adrenal isssues and need to supplement with DHEA, but my endo rarely has us go over 25 mg. Much more than that can do some nasty stuff to your body...

Really? I have that! I just took one! :thumbsup2

A friend of mine was told by her doc when her kid got the flu to take 70,000 mg a day for 5 days, then a week off and then resume regular dosing. Her kid has had the flu twice and she's never gotten sick, which is amazing! When stuff goes around, you can count on us to be the first to pick it up. If I'm sick, I normally take 10,000-20,000 a day or more depending on how bad it is. Usually goes away in a couple of days instead of hanging on for weeks like it used to. :thumbsup2
