I've been reading about the monorail woes and was wondering what the smarter way to get from Contemporary/Bay Lake Towers to Grand Floridian would be. Monorail from BLT->CR->GF or walking to MK->boat to GF.

Smart would in the sense of how long it should take, departure times, and on time rating.

There are no true woes with the monorail. There are those with unreasonable expectatations though. The monorail does a good job of getting a ton of people where they want to go. Yes, sometimes there is an issue. And if the monorail is the only option and you are standing there waiting for it to come, it can seem like a nightmare.
I have had only two monorail 'nightmares'....once when traveling from Epcot to TTC/MK to get to FtW for HDDR. We got stuck, up in the air, for about 35 mins. It started getting very hot and humid. People started getting panicky. But there was an issue up ahead and we had to wait until it was cleared.
Then, in August, we tried to get on the monorail at Epcot to get to MK. Evidently there had been a lightning strike so the monorail was shut down. They had buses for people heading to TTC...but there had to be many hundreds of people waiting. So, we took a bus to the TTC. Okay, then figured on the ferry to MK...yeah, that wasn't a good idea. Tons of people trying to do that as well. So, we walked to the Polynesian figuring we would take the boat over to MK...nope, had to be about 80 other guests with the same thought. Took 3 rotations before we could get on a boat. For the life of me, I can't imagine why Disney didn't run buses right to MK from Epcot that night as well as to TTC. That run from Epcot to MK took us close to 2.5 hrs.

But generally speaking, the monorail works just fine.

Just to clarify... there is no monorail from BLT -> CR. The monorail stops are MK -> CR -> TTC -> Poly -> GF.

Something to keep in mind, if you are starting out at BLT, by the time you walk to CR to catch the monorail you'd probably be at least 1/2 way (if not more to MK).

Actually I think travel times would be pretty close (by the time you factor in monorail stops at TTC & Poly).

Takes less than 10 mins to walk from the CR (or BLT) to the entrance to MK. It takes about 20 mins to get to the same spot using the monorail.

Sounds like a good topic for an email to Guest Communications.
