OK, so we have an opportunity to purchase 270 points for OKW from a good friend. We stay at the CR (usually concierge) once per year for about a week. We have been hoping that "the current CR construction" will become a CR DVC (I know, I know, but a girl can DREAM)!! My thought is....we purchase points at this great OKW price, and then if the CR does become a DVC, then we try to book at 7 months out. After much review of this board....I see people suggest to "purchase where you want to stay". We think OKW is beautiful (from what we saw during our visit last year when a friend got married in their villa). Do you think this would be a wise purchase knowing we are addicted to the location of the CR??
Any advice incredibly appreciated!!;)

It shounds like you have your heart set on CR....while we don't know if it will happen or not, if you would be disappointed not being able to consistently book at CR...than I would not buy at OKW.

The other option is to buy at OKW and do an add on later for CRV if they come to being. You wouldn't have to buy as many points at CRV when it opens, but you would also have the bulk of your points at OKW and most of your vacations would only be "guaranteed there".

I guess, in short answer is that if you only want CR than you need to wait...if you are ok staying somewhere else, but would ok just trying to get CR than you can do OKW. I expect, even if people don't want to buy at CRV it will be very popular, at least for the first few years as other members "try it out", so booking will be difficult at the 7 month mark.

getting the CR at 7 months is...probably optimistic.

i'd agree - wait for CR to start selling if you'd be unhappy getting "stuck" at OKW.

OKW is not like CR at all. It is laid back, relaxed, quiet community.

CR is an action place. You might be happier with a BWV. It is also an action place.

now I do love CR - but really love OKW. they are different - but hey so are my moods.

the first year expecting CR to be easy. AKV is - well at least for my dates - so expecting the same at CR.

the majority of DVC owners don't post here - or even know about CRV. So it will come as a shock when it is first announced.

would you believe I still meet people at WDW you have never even heard of DVC.

expecting CR to change that!

remember everything has to go through Disney and if the deal is that great they will probably buy it back with the ROFR.

I purchased AKV this past Sunday and asked my CM if it would be wise to wait for the CV's to be built before making this commitment. The CM explained that Disney will not have more then 2 properties available for sale at a time. Right now it is SSV and AKV. After SSV is sold out it will be AKV and GCV. After AKV sells out then it will be GCV and the new Villas they are building in Hawaii. After GCV is sold out, then the CV will be available (if indeed that is what they are building). So according to the CM we would have had a WHILE to wait if we planned on buying in CV. So we broke down on bought at AKV, if we like DVC as much as I think we will, we always have the oppertunity to buy in CV as well when they open.

Brian

Thanks Everyone for your help and advice! It is all greatly appreciated!!

If at a later date I purchased points for "what someday might be the CRV"....say (for IE) 50 points I purchase would allow for maybe a 2 nite stay....could I book those 2 nights at 11 months out and at 7 months try to add on?? Would that be the idea?

This makes sense, but it is somewhat doubtful....GCV and Hawaii will not affect any decisions at WDW. WDW receives a ton more visitors than DL, so for them to only off a California and Hawaii location only would not be very wise. I could seem them dropping to one WDW property while promoting the others. At the rate that CRV appears to be going, it looks to be a couple of years off anyway....so this would coincide with SSR being gone prior to opening and AKV being well on its way prior to the new location opening. I would never recommend waiting, unless you just wouldn't be happy anywhere but CRV.....I think most DVC'ers will admit they like to change some, but usually fall in love with their "home" resort, regardless what new ones come along.

Thats the same question I asked, and your thinking is correct. You can use your 50 CV points to book a CV 11 months out. You can use your 160 AKV to add on to your stay at 7 months out.

Yes, you can always book what you own at a resort at 11 months. If it were me, I would make the ressie with the available points at 11 months and make the rest of the reservation at OKW at 11 months. Then at 7 months, try to switch the OKW portion to the new resort.

Since we are never sure what DVD is doing...I would NOT wait for CRV (should it happen). I would enjoy a couple of years of membership with the lower maintenance and large villas at OKW, and then see what develops. If CRV never comes to pass, you still have the OKW contract to enjoy.

If you purchase the points from a friend, you'll need to understand the Right of First Refusal process that the sale will have to go through. If Disney doesn't feel like the purchase price is high enough, they will purchase it out from under you. That's their right.

OKW is a great resort, though. If CRV ever happens, you could buy an add-on directly from Disney. And you could bank and borrow to get three years worth of points every three years. We did that with our VWL points to get Thanksgiving every so often.

Thanks for all the great insight!!

Deb & Bill....
I do understand about the ROFR.....thanks so much for looking out for your Disney Friends!!!:thumbsup2

We are so excited... it's a big step, but we're ready 4 it!!

There is no way to "cut a Deal" to a friend without triggering ROFR, unless you set up some type of shady after sale deal that you may have to explain at tax time next year. Find out what market value is prior to buying that many points. Then consider the Additional Years cost if that is something important to you as they are offering to extend contracts to 2057 for $15-25 per point. After all that math, you could make a good judgement on if it is a deal.
Sounds like you have your heart set on CR and like us, would benefit from a smaller first contract and an add-on when CRV will be available.
Most likely, everyone will have a chance to get CRV at 7 months or less ONCE! When it opens to the public at 9:00 am for the first time. We got AKV the day it opened to the public by calling that first chance. CRV's opening will be like trying to buy Hannah Montana tickets...booked up in 15 mins and never to be seen again.

Also keep in mind that a 270 pt contract might be harder to sell down the road if you ever needed to. If you look on the resale sites you can see that a higher amount of points on a single contract will usually reflect a lower asking price. That's why a lot of people will start out with the minimum contract amount (160?) and then add-on in 100 or 50 pt increment as needed. Then, if the need arises, they can sell any portion of it. You can't break up a large contract and sell part of it.
