Cozumel

We are going on our 1st DC 10/11.....family of four, me, dh, 2 dd's 7 & 9. I know what excursion I want to do in Grand Cayman, but I have NO clue what to do in COZUMEL. There is a beach break excursion that sounds good. I don't really want to do the jeep one. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Everyone seems to like Mr. Sanchos. It is a beach with a pool and bar/restaurant. I myself haven't been there but will be in March. You can take a cab yourself.

Check out cozumel mini golf. This is a very tropical family run mini golf. Close to the port. Kids would love it, there are iguanas around waterfalls lots of tropical landscaping and friendly people running it. You could golf in the morning while it is not too hot the beach it or relax by the pool in the pm.

To get a true feel for the island I would recommend the tour we took with was the Cozumel ruins and beach tour. This is not the long 7 hour tour to the mainland ruins.

You board air conditioned buses right at the pier, meet your guide and you take about a 20 minute drive to the center of the island. Here you visit the San Gerviso ruins. Our guide did a great job of giving us the Mayan history. We also saw lots of iguanas and some wonderful birds as well.

A little chance to shop and then you take a half hour drive to the next destination - Playa Sol. This part of the trip takes you along to coast to see beautiful natural beaches - very unspoiled by development.

Playa Sol had a beautiful beach, shops, a small zoo (nothing to write home about here), and a pool.

I think there is also a tour that just goes to Playa Sol if you think the kids are too young for the history/ruins part.

We never made it to see the mini golf because there was just so much else to do and we can easily do that at home.

We took a $15 taxi ride to Mr. Sanchos, and found everything just great. Water Trampoline ($6), horseback riding ($30/1 and 1/2 Hours), ATV riding, same price I think. Or just chill on the beach. Their are tables and chairs under palm unbrellas, plenty of wait staff for food and drink, and I did not thing the prices were bad at all. And the food was good, drinks cold. No snorkeling, it is just a sand beach. Small cold water "jacuzzi pool", changing rooms, showers, very clean. Few vendors set up as you enter the "compound" with the usual tourist trinkets. Just get off the pier and get in the taxi line (of course, you must traverse the mall to get to the taxis) but no one bugs you. Very upscale stores, and a few trinket stores. Hope this helps.

Speaking of Mr. Sancho's. I just thought of something I don't think I've seen asked before. Can you pay with US Dollars or do you need to exchange your money for Mexican pesos?

Or is the easier answer that they accept credit cards?

We actually used both - credit cards (to pay for horseback riding) and cash for drinks and lunch on the beach. They will post the credit card in pesos; however, do not be concerned, it comes out fine in U.S. currency when it hits your credit card! The menus are in pesos also, no big deal. And actually, the man who swiped the credit card for horseback riding told us ahead of time it would be in pesos, so as to prevent heart failure I guess!

The taxi driver was happy to accept $15 american, plus tip.

Also, if you enjoy a nice quiet drink before dinner on the ship, stop in the very first shop getting off the pier. Cheap booze (compared to a drink on the ship) and reasonable brands ($15 for Kettel One vodka) and it mixes well with lemonade! Just pass on thru there on your way back onto the ship. And have your ship ID and photo ID ready - customs regs.

Our favorite excursion was Playa Sol in Cozumel. The sand was soft and the water was extremely warm! I'm accustomed to swimming in the oceans of Maine (brrr). This was a TREAT! I was occassionally surprised when I got salt water in my mouth because it was so warm I forgot I was in ocean water.

There are also lots of other things to do there, but that was my highlight.
