Cozumel dolphin encounter, can you return to ship early?

If you book a dolphin encounter in Cozumel (at either place) through DCL, can you get your own transportation to return to the ship early after your dolphin interaction? Or do you have to wait for your set time with the group transportation?

What are the pros/cons of booking on your own, not through DCL (besides saving $, obviously)?

They aren't going to hold you hostage if you decide to take alternate transportation back to the ship. Just be aware that you will no longer be protected from the ship departing without you as you might be if still on the excursion.

I'd definitely let the leader of the trip know what you plan to do so they don't spend time looking for you.

That was my concern, I didn’t know if there would be a way to let them know we were going back early so they didn’t think we were lost or something.

If you decide after everyone goes their separate ways, I don't know how you'd get word to them. If you are planning it from the beginning I'd let them know from the start.
