Just curious out there if many of you PI applicants also attached a cover letter with your resumes? My son asked me to ask you all! He has not previously attached a cover letter and has not had much luck with the process. Last fall he was stuck in interview stage til last day of notifications then went NLIC. He is currently in progress for 2 engineering PIs. He's just wondering if where he is going wrong in the process is a lack of cover letter. In the application process he says they only ask you to attach a resume, no mention of cover letter, so he has never included one. Now he's second guessing himself if he should've "gone the extra mile" even though it wasn't required. Thanks in advance!

I've applied to several internships through disneycareers.com, some of them said to attach a cover letter, some of them didn't. My assumption is that if they wanted one, they'd ask for it.

I'd say upload one either way, and if they want it they'll pull it, if they don't want it they won't.

Cover letters are very much becoming a thing of the past. I wouldn't be worried about it.

I uploaded a cover letter for each PI I applied for (I was NLIC today for one) mainly because I think of it as more professional. Either they will look at it and like that you showed you had the 10 mins to write one and make them feel better about you or they will ignore your efforts, but either way you aren't hurting yourself by including one.
By not writing one though the only way I could see it hurting him is if there is someone out there that has the exact same qualifications and they like them both the exact same amount they might choose the person who did write the letter. But lets be honest, when has that ever happened plus this is assuming they even looked at it.
Keep in mind though that the point of a cover letter is to help you get to the interview stage. Rather than just listing stuff you can do and what makes you qualified it rather shows some of your soft skills (teamwork kind of stuff) and explains how you are qualified plus how you will benefit the company. One of the career consolers at my school told us that most of the companies the school has talked to said that the cover letter and resume gets you to the interview, what gets you the job from there is you and that the person wiht the best qualifications doesn't always get the job but rather the person who interviews the best does.

Think it when it comes to smaller companies and interview processes, cover letters really do make the difference.

When it came to Disney, I didn't attach one because it didn't ask for one. Instead, it's very helpful to tailor your resume to match the job description and qualifications that are asked for. Often, they are looking for key words or phrases that match what they're looking for. As someone else mentioned, the cover letter and resume are important for getting the interview, not for getting the job- that's what the interview is for.
